security team its one of the basic duties. We were attacked by a raider party''

''A raider-what?'' Saba asked, confused. Chris smiled.

''Sorry. I forgot that you’re not a wolf. Raiders are basically savage, mindless wolves that go around hurting and sometimes killing other wolves that they find. They're mercenaries basically, who don't belong to any wolf pack usually. Anyway, we got attacked further in the forest, and they did a number on us. Only five of use were left alive, out of thirty'' he sighed, and Saba couldn’t help notice that he looked… guilty.

''Oh my God!'' Saba gasped at the enormity of what he had said.

''I know. Anyway, they did a good number on me before we managed to get back to the cave. I didn't expect to live, if you don't mind me saying so, but thanks to you... I think I'll make it yet'' he smiled warmly. Saba felt herself blush.

Chris blew upwards, the vapor flicking the fur on his head upwards slightly ''Quite cold today, don't you think?''

Saba nodded ''Yes, it is actually''

Chris stopped walking ''We can go back if you want. Back to the cave?''

Saba shook her head ''No, besides I'm having such a nice time!''

Chris chuckled ''Should I take that as a compliment?''

''If you want to'' Saba smiled.

They had been walking and talking for a while, and were now a fair distance from the cave. Saba realized how much she enjoyed being with Chris, despite only knowing him for a short while. She found herself looking at his face, and realized that he was really good looking.

''Uh, earth to Saba? Hello?''

Saba snapped out of her train of thought, and realized she had been staring at him.

''Sorry'' she said, looking down at the floor.

Chris didn't say anything, but padded closer to her. Soon, his nose was only a few inches from hers, and she found herself staring into his deep brown eyes. Then she started to lean closer. Chris watched her, before he started to lean too.

The space between them closed to a mere inch, before Saba's tongue flicked out and caught him on the tip of his nose. He wiggled it a bit and sneezed. Saba laughed.

''Tag, your it!''

Before Chris could react, Saba took off running. Breaking into a grin, Chris took off in hot pursuit.

Meanwhile, back in Nome, Kodi and the rest of the team had finished their warm up practice. The next assignment was the following morning, and thus Kodi and Dusty had voted to stay in town whilst the others had left for the cave. Kodi had just finished telling Kirby and Ralph about it.

''So let me get this straight. They all went after a wolf they don't even know to God knows where?'' Ralph exclaimed.

Kodi nodded ''Pretty much''

''I think they're all barmy!'' Kirby said, shaking his head in disbelief.

Kodi shrugged ''Well, my Dad wouldn't have agreed to go unless he was sure nothing bad was gonna happen''

''I still think they're all nuts! Even Chester went?'' Kirby asked. Kodi nodded.

''Blimey, I guess having pups softens your head!'' Ralph chuckled.

''Speaking of which, Kodi when are you and Dusty gonna...?'' Kirby left the sentence hanging. Kodi smirked.

''That's for me to know, and you to find out when appropriate!''

Kodi smirked as Kirby and Ralph eventually left. He decided he didn't want to go home just yet, he still felt wired after the run. Instead, he decided to have a walk round town to burn off some energy.

As he padded down the street, he thought back to what Kirby had asked about him and Dusty. Though he didn't want Kirby or Ralph to know, Kodi felt that his relationship with Dusty had gotten to the stage where maybe they should start considering pups. After all, they both loved each other. But did she feel the same way? He wasn't sure.

With a sigh, Kodi turned a corner to start down another street.

-------------------------------------------------

Dusty was on her way home. She felt tired after the run, but she was confident that with all the practice they had been doing, they were more than ready for tomorrows trip.

As she turned into an alleyway that would take her to the street her house was, she didn't see four shadowed figures pad in after her.

-------------------------------------------------

Heller smirked. Their target was right in front of them, and they were ready to have some more fun.

The whole of what was about to happen had started as a sick joke. It had been Zao who had spotted the gray husky padding down the street, and had immediately taken interest. Then again, Zao was always on the lookout for their next intended victim. The fact that this one happened to be female only made the prospect sweeter.

Heller himself didn't really care who they chose as a victim. To him, a dog was a dog. Even the word made him feel sick. The fact that he was bored only made it easier for him to realize the significance of their next victim. She was hot!

Forcing down a snigger, he looked back at the rest of the team. His eyes fell immediately on Zao, his silver coat illuminated in the dim darkness of the alley. Zao was a big guy with an ego to match. As well as being the strongest member of the four-wolf team, Zao was also the most short-tempered. It didn't take much to set him off, and most of those unfortunate to do so were never in the state to do it again.

His focus was next on Whistler. The first thing that caught Heller’s eye was the vast litany of scars criss-crossing across the smaller wolfs neck, in several different shades of red and black. The result of a hunter’s rifle. That's how Whistler got his name. His vocal chords had been blown out by the rifle bullet, resulting in the white wolf having to communicate through a series of grunts and whistles that escaped his throat. Truth be told, he hadn't had much to say before the accident anyway.

Finally, his gaze focused on Gillifer. Heller felt a growl accumulate in his throat, which he forced down with difficult. He made no denial of his hatred for the black and tan wolf behind him, though he had to admit he was a sharp character. The problem was, Gillifer was too full of himself, and that made him unpopular. Never the less, Heller couldn't think of a more cold blooded individual than Gillifer, and that made him at least useful to their objective.

Satisfied that everything was ready, Heller gave the signal.

With a flash, Dusty found herself pinned down to the floor as Zao launched himself onto her back. She tried to scream out, but before she could Whistler had gripped her muzzle shut. As Gillifer took Zao's place in pinning Dusty down, the silver wolf padded up in front of her and grinned at her terrified expression.

''All right guys. Who's first, hmm?''

-------------------------------------------------

Kodi had made his mind up. When he next saw Dusty again, he was going to pop the question. How he was going to do that exactly without making a total prat of himself he didn't yet know, but somehow he would find a way to ask her.

As he continued to mull over the possibilities, Kodi heard something that froze his blood.

''KOOODDDIII!!!''

Kodi's head snapped up at the source of the scream, and he knew immediately who it was.

''Dusty! I'm coming!''

Without hesitation, Kodi ran full pelt towards the source of the scream. Blind fear coursed through his veins, but he continued to run, his paws kicking up snow all around him.

As he rounded what turned out to be the last corner, Kodi came to a screeching halt, and had to fight with all his might to keep from screaming out in rage and horror. Lying in the snow, not ten feet in front of him, was Dusty.

She was lying on her side, her breath coming out in short ragged gasps as she struggled to remain conscious. Her eyes were dull and full of pain, tears streaming from them. Her glossy coat was now stained with dirt and blood from several vicious bite and scratch wounds.

Kodi growled, though it came out sounding more like a roar, at her three assailants. Zao leered at him with a smirk plastered on his face.

"What? You want some as well?'' the wolf growled, taking a step closer. Whistler lowered himself into a fighting stance next to him. Gillifer held back.

Kodi tensed himself up, black hate coursing through his body as he made eye contact with Zao. The silver wolf took a menacing step forwards.

''Zao, come on! Lets go!'' Heller shouted, just out of Kodi's eye line.

If looks cold kill, Heller would have died a violent death as Zao glared at him. With a frustrated growl, Zao turned back and leered at Kodi.

''I'll get you next time! Don't you think that I won't!''

With a savage smirk, Zao took off into the darkness, Whistler right behind him. At the other side of the alley, Heller and Gillifer took off right after them, disappearing into the darkness.

Kodi was at Dusty's side the instant the wolves were out of eyesight. His heart pounding, he nudged her gently with his nose.

''Dusty? Dusty, wake up. Please'' he pleaded, tears welling up in his eyes.

Dusty didn't move.

-------------------------------------------------

''Why? Why would anyone do such a thing? And to Dusty of all dogs!'' Kodi thought as he nudged Dusty again, hoping against all hope for a response.

Blind rage boiled up inside him as this thought ran through his mind. ''I’ll find those responsible for this! I'll find them, and rip them apart!'' he mentally snarled.

Dusty’s voice, little more than a pained moan snapped him back to reality.

''K…Kodi? Is that you...?" she asked, and Kodi nearly broke down right there and then.

"Y...yeah Dusty. It’s me, Kodi. I’m here, okay? Your safe" he
