away down the ledge. Grant turned to Chris.
"Deal with our friend down below. Take three guys, and enjoy yourself" he smirked.
Chris nodded grimly, and then walked out towards the lower chambers. Grant laughed darkly.
"And now, The Bad Wolf prophecy comes true!"
-------------------------------------------------
Saba panted for breath as she continued on through the darkened passage. She had been beyond surprise when she had realized that her cell was unguarded, but she knew deep down that it was probably a trap.
She stopped, as she was able to make out a brighter area of cavern ahead of her. Looking round, she slowly made her way towards it. Suddenly, a familiar figure stood in front of her, blocking her escape.
Chris was standing there, and at his side were three salivating wolves, they're eyes leering at her hungrily.
"I'm sorry it has to be this way Saba, but I must follow orders" Chris said, his eyes betraying his deep sadness for what was about to happen.
"Chris," Saba pleaded. "Why do you obey him? Can't you see what a monster he is?"
Chris sighed "Saba, I hate Grant. I hate what he does and I hate what he is. But he is our leader, and I have to obey him. I'm sorry"
He backed off, and the three wolves strode up to her. Saba backed up as they began to encircle her, until she was hemmed in on all sides.
"Make it quick guys. Don't prolong it" Chris ordered. The wolves leered at him, and then turned back to Saba.
"Chris, please!" Saba pleaded. Chris looked away from her.
Saba shut her eyes tightly as the wolves drew closer.
"Chris!" a voice shouted from the other end of the cavern. Saba looked up.
Suddenly, a red and cream flash bolted over and collided with two of the wolves, knocking them to the floor. Saba felt warm liquid splash onto her face as her rescuer bit into the exposed belly of one of her attackers. The wolf yelped in pain and shot off down the chamber past a startled Chris.
"Dingo!" Chris yelled, as another wolf was thrown to the floor, blood dripping from multiple wounds on his back and chest. Terrified, Chris shot away down the cavern.
Saba looked up as her brother belted the final wolf several times round the head, before the assailant went down in a bloody heap.
"Dingo!" she exclaimed as he padded up to her.
"Are you okay Saba?" Dingo asked concerned. Saba nodded.
"Dingo, we have to get back to the cave. Chris is going to try to kill Aleu, and Grant is on his way!"
Dingo looked grim "I know. He told me as such himself during our little encounter. He's one of the rabids from 'The Pack'"
Saba gasped. She had heard her father and siblings talk about 'The Pack' to her, but she had never thought that she would see one face to face.
Dingo nuzzled her "I'm glad your okay Saba" he smiled affectionately.
"So am I" Saba replied, licking him once on the cheek.
Dingo looked up "Come on Saba. The cave is deserted, and if you’re right, Chris is on his way to kill Aleu. We have to go, now!"
Saba nodded, and together they ran down the cavern towards the exit.
"I hope we make it in time!" Saba thought as they bolted out into the daylight.
-------------------------------------------------
"He's a what!?" Balto exclaimed. Sirius nodded.
"A traitor. Lance overheard him talking to another member of the Zanik. The plan was for him to get onto the team, and give him the opportunity to get to Aleu whilst she was undefended. In the heat of the battle, no one would have noticed until it was too late"
Balto nodded wordlessly "And... Saba?"
Lance sighed deeply "I tried to tell her, but she didn't believe me. I tried" he began to cry. Balto laid a paw on his shoulder.
"Lance, you did everything you could. Don't blame yourself"
Lance just nodded his head. Balto turned to Sirius.
"You said something about...Grant"
Sirius nodded "Lance says that he heard Chris say something about Grant taking over the clan. I assume then that he is the leader of the Zaniks that we have been trying to contact"
Balto sighed "The only one who got away. All those months, there's no telling what the rabies has done to his mind"
Lance looked up "We never did find a body when we went out to search for him. We assumed he had died in the blizzard"
"Then we assumed wrong Lance" Chester said as he padded into the chamber, his features hard set.
"I never should have let him get away. I should have stopped him" the husky growled.
"Chester, he would have killed Stacy. You didn't have a choice" Lance said.
"I could have tried. Took him by surprise, caught him off guard. Something!" Chester snarled. Lance shook his head.
"If you had done that, Stacy would be dead. You did the right thing"
Chester sighed "Did I Lance? Because from where I'm standing, I don't think I did"
Balto faced Sirius "Now what do we do?"
The black wolf shook his head "I don't know. Chris knows the secret chambers of this cave; I showed them to him myself. He could have told this Grant about them, and if he uses one it would takes precious time to search them all. We just have to hope"
Balto frowned "What we need to do is get Aleu to safety. Out of this cave where Chris can't find her"
Sirius sighed "She won't go, I've tried. She says it's her duty to stay in the cave"
Balto shook his head in frustration "Typical Aleu. Stubborn"
Lance looked at Sirius "What about Saba and Dingo?"
"When we have time, I'll send a search team. That's all I can do I'm afraid"
Lance closed his eyes "Saba" he whispered.
"Balto," Chester said. "Is Kodi fit to fight?"
Balto looked up "I don't know. Maybe"
"Good. Because we're gonna need all the help we can get when this thing blows open"
Suddenly, a loud call caught they're attention.
"Attack! Attack! Zanik!"
Lance frowned at Chester "Don't speak too soon"
-------------------------------------------------
Chaos erupted around the surrounding area of the cave as Grant approached from the shadows.
He liked the shadows. He had been dwelled within them ever since the accident, and now he was an expert at stealth.
He watched as the sentries around the cave entrance became embroiled in combat as the first wave of Zanik emerged from over the hill. Grant smirked, one side of his face twitching, the other frozen.
He glanced sideways, to ensure he wasn't being watched, and then he padded inside.
"Balto pally, you are in for one hell of a shock!" he sniggered, before disappearing back into the shadows.
-------------------------------------------------
Chris sighed as he approached Aleu's chamber. As Sirius had anticipated, Chris hadn't found it hard to immerse himself with in the chaos outside and creep in through one of the secret passages he had been shown.
No one would know, until it was too late.
Silently, he padded inside the alcove and scanned round for his target. But it was empty.
"What the...?" he spoke aloud. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain round the back of his head, and he collapsed to the floor as his legs gave way underneath him. Looking up, he met his attackers gaze.
"I've been waiting for you Chris" Aleu said through gritted teeth.
Chris hung his head.
-------------------------------------------------
Mandy padded outside the nursery and took a cursory look round. Inside the alcove three pups, two white and one black, lay asleep. She had been looking after them ever since Chester and Stacy had arrived at the cave, and she had grown very attached to the three little balls of fur.
"Maybe tonight, I'll ask Ferrin if we're ready for our own litter" she thought aloud, a motherly smile spreading across her face.
This thought in mind, she padded into one of the nearby alcoves opposite the nursery. This was reserved for Stacy and Chester, but tonight Stacy had decided to sleep with the pups inside the nursery. Mandy didn't mind, she had had lots of questions to ask Stacy about motherhood. They had enjoyed those conversations.
She peered inside the alcove, hoping Chester was back. She wanted to ask him whether he would talk to Ferrin about being a father.
She sighed in disappointment as she realized the chamber was empty.
"He must still be with Sirius. I'll ask him later"
Suddenly, Mandy felt a chill run down her back. It wasn't cold.
She heard something move behind her, and she span round.
Before her was the most grotesque dog she had ever seen in her life. One side of his face was mauled beyond belief, and twisted into a vicious smirk that made her shiver with fear.
"Who...who are you?" she stuttered. The figure laughed evilly.
"I'm The Bad Wolf. And it's way past your bedtime"
Mandy screamed as the dog launched itself at her, and tore her throat out. Blood squirted onto his face, which he lapped up hungrily.
"It's been a long time since I've done this. I'm afraid I might be a little rusty" Grant sniggered as he proceeded to tear chunks out of Mandy's body and devour them hungrily. Blood dripped from his muzzle and coated his matted fur and claws.
When he had finished, Grant threw Mandy's mutilated body aside, and proceeded to pad inside the
