under her.
"Now who has who?" Saba smiled, bending down and licking his nose. Chris smirked.
"Let me up and we'll find out!"
Saba hopped off of him, and before he could get up she took off ahead of him.
"Catch me if you can!" she yelled as she disappeared into the foliage. Chris jumped up and took off in hot pursuit.
"She's fast...but I'm faster!"
Pretty soon, he had caught up to her. He got close enough to attempt to jump onto her back. He reared himself up ready to pounce.
Suddenly, Saba let out a yelp of pain and collapsed in front of him. Chris jumped over her to avoid a collision, and padded up to her.
"What's wrong? Is this a trick?" he smirked, but it quickly faded when he got a closer look.
Saba's leg was caught in a trap, it's sharp barbs imbedded in her front leg. As he watched, blood steadily seeped out of the wound onto the snow.
"Oh jeez, are you okay?" he asked, his breathing becoming more rapid.
"Ah! It hurts!" Saba cried through gritted teeth.
Chris took a deep breath to calm himself "Okay, I'm gonna try to prize it open. But it'll hurt"
Saba nodded "Just get it off, quick!" from her voice; Chris could tell she was in extreme pain.
Chris leant down and gripped the trap with his paws. He latched his claws in-between the jaws of the trap, and taking a deep breath began to prize it open. Saba yelped as the trap began to give, all be it slowly. Chris grunted as he lifted the jaws apart.
"Okay! Pull your paw out!" he said through gritted teeth, sweat beading on his forehead. Saba yanked her paw free, just as Chris's grip gave way. The trap shut with a savage clang.
Chris wiped the sweat off his brow and padded over to Saba. Carefully, he lifted her injured leg up and began to lick at the wound. Saba winced in pain, but allowed him to continue.
"How do you feel?" he asked once he had finished tending to her injury.
"Terrible. It hurts really badly" she replied. Chris nodded.
"It will do for a while. But it doesn't look too deep, so it shouldn't scar"
Saba smiled faintly "Thank you"
Chris smiled warmly "Hey, I owed you one"
To his surprise, Saba leant forwards and nuzzled him.
"What was that for?" he asked, a faint blush appearing on his cheeks.
Saba just smiled "Your blushing Chris"
Chris shook his head "Am not!"
Saba laughed, and a few seconds so did Chris.
"Okay, who am I kidding?" he chuckled, then leant down and nuzzled Saba. "Can you walk?" he asked.
"Yeah, I think so" she replied. Gingerly, she got to her feet, her injured leg against her side. Leaning against Chris slightly, they began to make their way back to the cave.
About an hour, they had reached the entrance to the cave. Saba looked at Chris and nuzzled him.
"I enjoyed today Chris" she said. Chris chuckled.
"What? All of it?" he gestured to her front leg. Saba shook her head.
"Well okay, most of it" she chuckled.
Chris looked behind him "Listen, I've got a few things to sort out. You should probably have that leg get another look at"
Saba nodded "Okay. Will I see you later"
Chris shrugged and smiled "Maybe. But I ain't promising anything"
Saba smiled warmly and nuzzled him again "Okay. Bye Chris"
"Bye Saba"
Saba smiled and padded into the cave. Chris sighed, and padded away around the side of the cave. As he was walking, he heard something.
"Psst!"
Chris stopped walking and listened.
"Who's there?" he said, scanning around. A voice behind him caused him to jump.
"Don't panic! It's just me!"
Chris scowled at the gray wolf who had just appeared ''Jesus, Maxwell! You trying to give me a heart attack or what!?"
Maxwell chuckled "Sorry, but given the circumstances I didn't really see the point of making my appearance known whilst you were...previously engaged"
Chris frowned "Just shut it will ya?"
"Ooh! Touchy subject? In fact, that's what I wanted to talk about. Your getting way over your head Chris"
"What do you mean?" Chris asked.
"I've been watching you and her, and I think your getting too personally involved. Don't forget, she's one of the targets!" Maxwell replied. Chris leered at him.
"Keep your voice down! They've got sentries patrolled round here, you want them all to overhear you?"
"I'm not the one risking blowing my cover Chris. She's the enemy, and your walking a very thin line if you continue the way your going!" Maxwell said.
"What? You think I'd let some cute bit of fluff get in the way of my assignment? Don't count on it!" he chuckled.
"I'm glad to hear it Chris. We make the first move tonight, and then our next target is her. Can you handle that?"
Chris nodded "You bet. If she gets to know too much, I can take her out myself"
Maxwell nodded, then looked up "By the way. Gillifer’s dead"
Chris raised his eyebrows "Dead? By who?"
Maxwell smirked "Do you really have to ask?"
Chris broke into a grin "It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!"
"I'll inform Heller that everything is going as schedule then?" Maxwell asked.
"You betcha buddy!" Chris smirked.
Maxwell nodded "Take care Chris"
"You too Maxwell. You too"
Maxwell vanished back into the foliage. Chris looked round him, then padded back to the entrance to the cave.

"What!?"
Chester stared open mouthed at Balto, who had just informed the black husky about the present situation.
"They wanted me to take the role of head of security. But I don't think I'm up to that position Chester" Balto said.
"So, what? You thought you'd ask if I'd care to do it!? Jesus Balto, I'm an outsider here! What makes you think I'd be any good?"
"Your one of the best fighters in Nome Chester. You were head of the team and you've got far more fighting experience than I have" Balto replied.
"Balto, that was against other dogs. You’re asking me to fight against wolves! That's an entirely different matter!" Chester said.
"Sirius said he would teach you. I'd help you as well" Balto said.
Chester sighed "Balto, this is just...nuts! I don't know any of these wolves, and you've said yourself that you’re not up to the challenge and your half wolf!"
Balto sighed and gave Chester a pained expression "Chester, they're desperate. Aleu is frantic with worry, and unless we get another security team up and ready we don't stand a chance"
"You do know what your asking me to do, don't you?" Chester said. Balto nodded.
"I...oh, it doesn't matter Chester. Forget I said anything" Balto sighed.
Chester regarded him "Balto, what's wrong?"
Balto sighed "The...other clan attacked Nome again. They...they got Dusty"
"What!?" Chester exclaimed. Balto nodded.
"She's still alive for all I know, but...I just don't know. First Aleu, and now Kodi"
Balto sighed again and looked at Chester "I'm sorry Chester. I shouldn't involve you in my personal affairs. It doesn’t matter"
"Of course it bloody matters!" Chester yelled. Balto looked up in surprise. Chester smiled.
"Balto, this is without a doubt the craziest thing I've ever been asked to do! A husky asked to lead an entire wolf fighting team! But, I was never one to back out of a challenge"
Balto raised an eyebrow "But...before...?"
"Before I didn't know what these bastards had done to Dusty! Now I know whom I'm being asked to fight against, I ain't gonna back out now!" Chester smirked.
Balto smiled "Chester, you do know that this could all in disaster. You might not make it out alive"
Chester chuckled "Balto, I didn't think I'd survive what happened a few months ago! And if I survived that, I can survive this!"
"But what about Stacy and the pups?"
"Now what would my family think of me if I turned down the opportunity to keep them safe, hmm?" Chester replied. Balto smiled.
"Thank you Chester. I really, really appreciate this"
"Hey, I've still got a lot of repayment to do to you. Think of this as another step to achieving that" Chester smirked.
"I'll go tell Sirius then" Balto said.
"You do that Balto. And find out when practice begins, I want to get back in shape!" the husky laughed.
Balto padded off towards the shelves. When he reached them, he started climbing up to the top where Aleu's chambers were. When he reached the final shelf, he padded to the alcove and peaked inside. What he saw took him completely by surprise.
Aleu and Sirius were lay next to each other in the middle of the chamber, and Sirius was nuzzling her. Balto smiled, and cleared his throat, taking both of them by surprise.
"Papa! I..." Aleu stuttered, getting to her feet.
Balto chuckled "Something going on without my knowledge?"
Aleu smiled in embarrassment, and Sirius looked at Balto sheepishly.
"Balto, I...this is going go be difficult to explain..." he said, not looking at Balto.

Awww.........if I were there, I'd affectionately lick the tears
trickling down Stacy's muzzle to comfort her before she had a chance
to wipe her tears away. |
