safe" he bent down and licked her cheek.
"Okay…." she replied. Then, in a voice barely more then a whisper, she asked-
"Kodi...tell me. Am I...gonna die?”
“No, Dusty your gonna be fine!" He said, trying to sound as confident as possible, with limited success. “You’ll be just fine!"
Kodi bent his head and licked the tears from Dusty’s cheeks. Once again, he felt that uncontrollable rage build up inside him. If he hadn't of been as quick as he had been, Dusty would have been dead. He now wanted more than ever to hunt down the wolves responsible.
He wasn't sure how many there had been, he could only make out two in the dark. But he was sure he had heard a third voice, and he knew the name of one of Dusty's attackers. Zao.
He lay down next to her and began to gently lick her wounds. At first she whimpered in pain as his tongue cleaned the gashes, but after a few moments she quieted and allowed him to carry on. After a few minutes he stood, moving gently so as not to cause her any further pain.
"Dusty, do you think…can you walk?" He asked.
“I…I'm not sure. But...I'll try" She replied.
She managed to roll over and push herself into a sitting position. She looked at him and smiled sadly.
"That's as far as I can go I'm afraid" she panted, obviously in pain. Kodi nodded.
"Okay, I'll give you a paw" he said, before gently easing her up until she was leaning upright against him. She smiled faintly.
"Thanks. Now...can we go home?"
Kodi just nodded, tears threatening to cloud his vision.
The actual process of movement was made difficult be the fact that Dusty had to lean on him for support, meaning he had to take things extremely carefully. After several agonizing minutes they reached the porch of Dusty's house, where Dusty's frantic owner was stood.
"Oh my God! Dusty!"
Within seconds, he came hurrying over, scooping Dusty up in his arms and carried her into the house. Kodi paused briefly, before padding inside after him.

Less than an hour later, Kodi sat in the little back room of the house. Every few seconds, he cast a nervous stare at the closed door leading to the kitchen where Dusty's owner had taken her. The doctor had arrived a few minutes after they had arrived, and had been led into the kitchen.
Now all Kodi could do was wait. And hope.
Kodi shifted restlessly. He couldn’t stand being made to wait. He wanted to see Dusty to make sure she would be okay, and instead he was forced to wait.
One thing was for certain. He wouldn't be bringing up the subject of pups with her for a 'long' time.
His thoughts were cut abruptly by a frantic scratching at the door. Kodi padded over and opened the door, to be met by Kirby and Ralph.
"Kodi? What are you doing here? We wanted to see Dusty" Kirby said, but stopped when he noticed the pained expression on Kodi's face.
"What's happened?" Ralph asked in a nervous tone.
Kodi sighed, and then gestured inside "I'll tell you inside"
Kodi padded inside, accompanied by his teammates.

Meanwhile, Heller and his team had made it back to the cave. They were now stood outside the alcove leading to the throne room. Zao was talking to one of the sentries.
"You should have been there pal, then you would know what I'm talking about! She was hot!" he sniggered, his eyes twinkling.
Heller cleared his throat "I only hope the boss sees it the same way"
Zao glared at the red wolf "Sod what he thinks!"
Heller raised an eyebrow "I'm glad you see it that way Zao, cos one of us has to explain to him how we cocked up!"
"We?'' Gillifer purred. Heller turned to him.
"Yes, we! Am I the only one who noticed the name on her harness? Dusty! We were told to leave that one alone!"
Gillifer shrugged "An easy mistake to make. It was dark, how were we to know?"
Whistler grunted and nodded. Heller shook his head.
"This is bad. In fact, it’s worse than bad. Its a disaster!"
"Calm down Heller! Gillifer's right, it was an easy mistake to make. Darkness and testosterone don't go well together!" he sniggered.
The other sentry walked up to them "He wants to see one of you. Now"
Whistler and Heller exchanged nervous glances. Zao remained blank. Gillifer padded forwards.
"I'll speak to him" he said. The sentry gave him a look.
"You watch what you say. He's pretty pissed off with what happened"
Gillifer smirked "I'm his second in command. He'll understand once I've spoken to him, and he'll realize what an easy mistake it was to make"
The sentry turned to let him pass. Gillifer turned to the rest of the group.
"You owe me for this!" he said, before padding inside the alcove.
The other three wolves remained in silence, exchanging worried glances at each other and the alcove. Suddenly, there was a yell from inside the alcove.
"No! Let me go! Let me go!"
Zao smirked and padded closer to get a better listen. Whistler ruffled his paws, and Heller just grimaced.
"No...!" Gillifer’s voice was cut short, and several screams of pain reverberated through the cave. Then, silence.
Zao chuckled and padded back to the other two wolves. Whistler returned the smirk.
"Heller! Get in here!" a dark voice ordered from the alcove. Heller paused briefly, before stepping up to the two sentries who allowed him to pass.
Heller padded inside the alcove, adjusting his eyes to the darkness. He padded to the center of the room, where a rock throne glistened from within the shadows. On the floor, blood gushing from the gagged tear in his throat, was Gillifer. Bright red blood soaked the floor, and continued to seep from the litany of gashes on the dead wolfs body.
"An easy mistake to make Gillifer. Think nothing of it" the dark voice laughed. Heller turned to the throne, where a wolf shaped figure was sat in the shadows. He bowed.
"You wanted to see me sir?"
"Heller, you are now my second in command. Don't disappoint me like our late friend here" the figure drolled.
Heller nodded, then padded out of the alcove, being careful to avoid getting blood on his paws. Once outside, he turned to Zao and Whistler.
"I'm the new second. Now we do things my way!"

Back at Aleu's cave, Balto padded up to Sirius who was in heated discussion with Jaxx.
"You heard what!?" Sirius exclaimed. Jaxx nodded solemnly.
"I'm afraid so sir. Another attack, this time on a mail dog. I fear the humans are going to get involved, that I'm fairly certain of"
Sirius sighed "Very well Jaxx. I'll speak to you more later"
Jaxx nodded, and then padded away. Sirius shook his head, and then noticed Balto for the first time.
"Oh, Balto. I must apologize, I did not notice you there"
Balto padded closer "What was that about another attack Sirius?" he asked. He hoped his worst fears wouldn't be confirmed.
Sirius sighed again "There was an...incident in the town. One of the mail dogs was brutally attacked last night. I'm told that it was the same raider party that attacked my team"
Balto gulped "Kodi?"
Sirius shook his head "No, it wasn't your son"
Balto sighed with relief "Thank God. Then...who?"
"It was his...mate" Sirius answered.
"Dusty!?" Balto exclaimed, unable to let what Sirius had told him sink in.
Sirius nodded.
"Oh...Kodi..." Balto sighed. "I'll have to tell Jenna"
Sirius nodded "Would you like me to send someone to bring Kodi here?"
Balto shook his head "No. He won't leave Dusty's side, no matter what"
"I understand" Sirius replied. The black wolf paused for a moment then looked at Balto.
"So, have you thought about my offer any further?"
Balto shook his head "I'm sorry Sirius, but my answer is the same as before. I will help in any way I can, but I cannot accept that role"
Sirius sighed, then nodded "Your answer is...understandable Balto. I accept your concerns. Now, if you will excuse me"
Sirius padded past him towards the shelves. Balto paused briefly, then looked up.
"Sirius?"
Sirius turned round "Yes Balto?"
"What if I could get someone better suited for the role in my place?" Balto said. Sirius raised an eyebrow.
"Like who?"
Balto smiled "Oh I think I know just the guy"

Saba paused for breath, her ears perked up. She listened intently for any sudden noises. But there was nothing.
She scanned the foliage in front of her, but nothing stirred.
Suddenly, she found herself pinned to the ground by something on her back. She looked up at her attacker.
"Mistake number one! Don't stand about with your back turned!" Chris smirked.
"You cheated!" Saba gasped, a smile dancing on her muzzle. Chris chuckled.
"Now what are you gonna do? I caught you!''
Saba smirked slyly "We'll see!"
Without warning, she kicked out her back legs, knocking Chris off balance. Suddenly, it was he who was under her.
