Through My Eyes
I followed the mighty leader, Quivering Arrow was his name. He moved on through the winter snow. The weary pack trudged on behind him, the snow binding me, now and then. It stung
Then, we were stopped. A tiny creature must have fallen… a scent familiar, but of our kind. Quivering Arrow dug in the snow, and finally revealed a pup. She was small, and frail, and weak. I was assigned as her care-taker.
I named her Neigeux, a word meaning “snow.” Too young to remember the day we had found her, she believed me to be her father. We kept the relationship a secret, and I never did tell her the truth. Neigeux’s coat turned to its new colors, and she was then a tan. Around Neigeux’s eyes was a white patch, and her muzzle was partly white. The mark went to her chest, and the rest of her body was the tan color of her face. Her tail ended in an odd white tip, something that none of us had ever seen before. All of our tails ended in black tips, for we were mighty wolves. Neigeux was a husky.
We agreed that Neiguex would return to the wild after a few months of my mentoring. She would find her own home, and never return to the pack. I had thought this a worthy choice for her, and had not thought about the circumstances under which she would leave her mark on us.
Neigeux grew, and was resented by most of the pack. Three of the pups seemed to be a target of practice for her hunting skills, and she was a target for their own taunting. I was often forced to rush forward and punish Neigeux for her actions.
Neigeux was a fine hunter, I knew it. She notched the ear of a yearling, Yellow-Lark. Of course, I must have rebuked her, she could not continue with that behavior. However, she strutted about, and eventually proved to be more loyal toward the pack than most of the others.
So, I taught her the ways of the pack. She was able to hunt, and even showed much compassion and patience for the new pups. But Neigeux’s stay had gone over the time limit.
One wolf never had truly agreed to allowing the husky to enter the pack, and one night, a fight broke out.
I ran toward the scene, summoned by Neigeux’s painfull cries. I was able to knock over the black wolf. But I was over taken by his followers, and I knew I was doomed… until Neigeux joined the fray. Together, we battled the mighty wolves, and were finally able to chase them away, banning them. Never again would they join the pack.
I knew I could not let Neigeux go.
I convinced Quivering Arrow to let her stay, she was only two years of age, and she still seemed to need my presence for her to feel secure. I told the wolves my side of the story, and only my trusted friend, Maple, believed me, that I was serious, and that I even knew what I was saying.
Still, we cared for her, as our own. Neigeux knew how much the other wolves wished for her to leave, and the bond between us, and Maple, grew stronger. She began to look up toward Maple, as a mother. Maple took her new role quite well.
Then, one day, Neigeux left us. Taunted the night before, dangerously close to beginning a fight, she ha fled. I did not go after her, trusting her instincts would lead her home. And they did, causing the most terrible accident in the history of the pack. Neigeux came for me, for help… chased by the creatures known as “Man.” Their arms reached out, and lightning burst forth, and I fell. The wolves scattered, and I felt only anger toward Neigeux, she stood, cowering in the rain, falling like her tears. I knew she had not meant it. I sighed. This was the end.
Neigeux approached me, calling me by the name she very often did, “Father.” I then remembered that I had never told her where she had come from, and I told her, in my last breath, that I was not her father… she had not been born into the pack, and that she was entirely different from us. That was the last I saw of my Neigeux.
