Chapter One

Shadow walked into his chambers.

It was early morning, and Aleu and the kids were still asleep.

Shadow had grave news.

The Talbourne clan had been at borderline war with the Uniea clan for a while now, but this morning…

Shadow had been out on a hunt with his team, and they’d been attacked.

He couldn’t be sure, but he thought that it was the Uniea.

He’d lost most of his team.

They were very good, and very fast.

He’d sent Dash and Timbre to their families, after that… they needed it.

Shadow walked over next to Aleu, and smiled.

Though he had no idea how, somehow Aleu had died in a battle with the demon wolf Shade, but then… she’d come back.

Aleu had told him that it was Aniu who was able to do such a thing, but Shadow didn’t care how, he was just happy to have her back.

He nuzzled her, and she opened her eyes.

She yawned and smiled.

“Shadow? Why are you waking me up so early?”

She stood up.

Then she noticed the expression on Shadow’s face.

“What’s wrong?” She asked.

Shadow looked at the floor.

“We were attacked this morning.”

Aleu was instantly awake.

“What?! By who?!”

“I don’t’ know for sure, but I think it was members of the Uniea clan… in any event, they were wolves.”

“Losses?” Aleu asked, hoping they were light.

Shadow sighed.

“Thirty two.”

Aleu took a step back.

“But… but that almost wipes out…. your team.

Shadow nodded.

A terrible thought crossed Aleu’s mind then.

“Dash, and Timbre?”

“They’re fine.” Shadow said. “Dash, Lightning, Timbre and I are the only ones left.”

“This is terrible.” Aleu said, “I’ll send a messenger to the Uniea clan today, and find out why this has happened.”

“I request permission to begin recruiting new members, to re-strengthen my team.” Shadow said.

Aleu nodded.

“Do it.”

Shadow nodded, turned and walked out.

Aleu thought of all of the wolves that had died this morning and sighed.

Then she walked out of the chamber to go talk to a messenger.

Timbre stumbled into his chambers.

It was so early, he didn’t expect Melody to be awake, but she was.

She ran over to him.

“Are you okay?”

He nodded.

“I can’t explain it,” she said, “but I just felt something was wrong, terribly wrong. It kept me from being able to sleep.”

He nodded again.

“The team was attacked.”

“Oh my gosh!” She said, breaking into tears, “I knew it.”

“We lost almost everyone.”

“What about Shadow, and… and Dash?”

Melody visibly brightened when he said.

“They’re fine, Lightning is a bit beat up, but he’ll be fine too.”

“Who else?” Melody asked.

“That’s all that made it.” Timbre answered.

‘All that made it?” Melody said, unable to believe what she’d just heard.

Timbre nodded.

“Who could have done something like this?” She asked.

“I… I don’t know,” Timbre said. “Shadow thinks it was the Uniea clan, but… but if it was, they’ve gotten to be very good fighters.”

“Did he tell Aleu?” Melody asked.

Timbre nodded.

“He was going to do that when we got back.”

He sighed.

“Melody, as much as I want to stay and talk…”

He looked at the ground.

“Between the four of us, we’ve got thirty two families to tell about this.”

Melody nodded.

“Do you want some help?”

Timbre shook his head.

“No, they were our team, we’ll do it.”

Melody stepped closer to him, and nuzzled him.

“I’m glad you’re okay.”

He smiled a bit.

“So am I.”

He turned and began to walk away, then turned.

“I’ll be back in a little while, I’m dedicating this day to you and our family, that… that was too close.”

Melody smiled and nodded.

“Okay.”

Then he turned and walked out of the chamber.

Not too far down the way, Dash was doing the same thing.

He’d stopped next to June, and not woken her up yet, just watching her sleep, and thinking.

He was thinking about his new life.

His first mate, Shasta, had been killed when Steele attacked the pack.

He could still hear her dying words.

A tear came to his eye at that memory.

He’d met Shasta what seemed like so long ago, but in reality was only what… five, six years ago? She’d come to help Boris watch over them when his mother and father had gone to Shishmaref.

The two of them had gotten quite close in the time that they’d been together, and well one thing led to another, and Dash wound up moving away from his parents and life as a dog in Nome to become a wolf, and part of the Talbourne clan.

The two of them had had kids, and this thought brought a smile to his face.

Then there were the countless attacks and battles that the two of them had been in. The first against his friend Timbre, who had, strangely enough, come back to the right side, killed his Alpha, and befriended Dash’s sister Melody.

The two of them now lived in the pack as well.

Timbre and Dash had remained good friends.

In fact, were it not for Timbre, Dash wouldn’t be standing here, not after today.

He shuddered at the thought of what had transpired.

His thoughts then turned back to Shasta.

Then came the memory he feared worst of all.

Her death.

Dash still couldn’t shake the idea that it was his fault.

Steele, an enemy of his fathers, had attacked the pack.

He’d killed Timbre’s daughter, Tiru, and a number of other wolves, including Dash’s best friend, after Timbre, Dalchei.

June had been Dalchei’s mate, and in this, Dash thought that the two of them had been better able to be with each other, for they had both lost that which mattered to them most.

After Dalchei, Dash became scared.

Shasta was supposed to go on a hunting trip with their children, and Shadow.

Dash had asked her to stay in the cave, and this is why he thought he’d been responsible for her death.

That night, something, Dash would never learn what it was, lured Shasta out into the main chamber, and Steele struck.

Dash remembered waking to a scream….

Chapter Two

Dash woke up.

He couldn’t explain it, but he felt as if he would be sick, and his head hurt.

Dash stood up.

“Where’s Shasta?” Dash thought.

Suddenly, he heard a scream.

“Shasta?” Dash thought.

“Shasta I’m coming!”

Then he ran out of the chamber.

Dash ran down the next few shelves, more falling than descending, somehow he kept from breaking his neck.

The feeling in his stomach was getting worse and worse, and though he couldn’t explain it, he was nearing full out panic.

He finally lost his footing on a pile of loose rocks and fell down the last two shelves.

Dash lay on the ground for a moment and shook his head.

“Ouch.” He thought.

He opened his eyes.

“What the….”

Dash stood up rather quickly, and forgot about the pain.

There was a hole in the ceiling of the cave, some two hundred feet up.

Moonlight shone through the hole, and illuminated a wolf, which was laying on it’s side.

Dash couldn’t tell who it was, but somehow…. he knew.

“No!” He thought.

He ran over to the wolf, half limping, half dragging his back leg, as he’d hurt it when he fell.

He finally made it next to her, and fell on the ground.

Shasta was hurt, and she was hurt bad.

Seemingly thousands of small bites covered her body.

Most of them were
