“Wake up Balto.” Said a quiet voice this time.

Since Balto was awake anyway it wasn't hard to get up.

“Yes.” He said groggily.

“Balto there is someone is here to see you.” Said Jenna.

“Who is it?” Asked Balto.

“I don't know.” She replied. Jenna sounded upset.

Balto got up and followed Jenna to a wolf. She was a pretty thing. Light brown fur and dark eyes that made you think of dark caves.

“Hi Balto.” She smiled. She had a high voice that made her sound like 8-year-old girl. Balto starred for a moment. She giggled “You don't remember me do you?”

“I...uh...No sorry.” Replied Balto. He gave a weak smile.

“I was your best friend when we were little but not as good a friend as Nightsky. I'm Annalese.” She introduced herself. She looked down and said, “I had hoped you'd remember me.”

“I'm sorry but I don't.” Balto said. Annaleese stayed for a few more minutes just starring. Smiling to her self. Then she left.

“Who is she Balto?” Asked Jenna.

“I don't know Jenna.” Replied Balto.

“How can you not know?” Asked Jenna.

“I don't know!” Said Balto his voice rising in frustration.

Mean while Cody was coming to visit his mom and dad before he left in the morning. But he heard yelling in the distance. As he got closer he recognized the voices. It was his parents. What was going on? They never fight. Cody ran to see what was happening.

“Jenna I don't even know why we’re discussing this! What is your problem?”

“Balto Why don’t you know? Why did you talk to her if you don't even know her.” Jenna said settling down a bit. “So why are all the maidens coming to claim they’re knight shining amour.

“What if I did?” Asked Balto.

“Wouldn't you remember?” Jenna said.

Balto looked down and said, “I don't know".

Jenna looked in the distance and saw the white wolf again. Who was she?

Cody was so in shock. He ran to his teammates.

“What happened?” asked Dusty.

“They were fighting when I got there.” Said Cody.

“They fought?” Asked a dog with his mouth was open.

“ Never thought they'd ever fight.”

Turns out, everyone was in shock.

“Do you know what about?” Asked Dusty.

“I didn't stick around to find out....but mom did keep saying "her" He gulped. “So I don’t even know what happened.?

Jenna walked into the dog shed. Everyone was looking at her. She turned to Cody and said, “what’s going on?”

“Mom, are you okay?” Asked Cody.

“Yeah, why?” She said He smile fake and big.

“I heard you and dad fighting.” He looked down. “What was it about?”

“Oh.” She looked to the side. “A wolf had shown up looking for your Father. She was really pretty. She said she used to be your Dads best friend. I don't know but I got scared because she seemed so… secretive like there was something she did not want him to know. So out of my stupidity I confronted him but he did not remember her. I got mad because how can you forget someone like that. Especially your best friend. You know what I mean?”

“You know he did not tell me where he came from when I took him in....A voice said.

It was Boris.

“What do you mean?” Asked Cody. “I am meaning is I found him, that’s how he came to live with me.”

“I know that.” Said Cody. “But where did you find him?”

“One day I was walking when I heard sniffling walked to the soft voice it led me to a small little dog. He looked at me then I asked if he was okay? He said he didn't know I asked him his name He said Balto Then I asked him where his parents were He answered he didn't Know. I found that strange but he had nowhere to go and I couldn't leave him there. So that’s that. But one thing was always so strange he talks some what about his past but not enough to know what he is talking about. I know its weird. Its like his memories were taken from him.”

Balto went down the path, which he remembered he'd walked when he was a pup. Something evil lurked in the air. Balto got a strange feeling it was like something bad happened there but didn't or couldn't remember what. What had happened here? Why is this so hard to remember? Then he saw blood on the ground. What on earth happened here? Why can’t he remember? He saw his mother. Her flesh torn apart, bloods poring from her open wounds. Balto backed away. Her lips were torn off you could see muscle poking threw. Her eyes were the worst part they were eggshell white matching what you could see of her fur. Balto was truly frightened.

She spoke whispering his name in a gasp.

“Balto…Balto…be careful love…” She seemed to be fading away.

“Be careful of what!” He called to her.

“Dad wake up!” Said Cody. Balto jerked upward and bumped into Cody.

“Balto what is wrong?” Asked Jenna.

“Just a nightmare.” Answered Balto.

“Just a nightmare! Just a nightmare! Balto you tell me that 5 out of 7 days a week. For who knows how long!” Boris threw a fit.

“Boris, don't make a mountain out of a molehill.” Said Balto.

“Balto please its you making a mountain out of a molehill.” Boris stomps off.

“Dad what did he mean?” Asked Cody.

“Well...” Balto started. “Okay I've been having these dreams remember? They nodded. Well I've been having a knew one. The worst one is when I’m walking down a path there’s this weird feeling but then I see blood everywhere...”

“Yes that’s the same old Balto.” A voice said. “Always over working things.”

A black wolf came in. “I'm so glad I found you where have you been all theses years?”

“What?” Asked Balto.

The wolf looked surprised and got wide eyed. “You don't remember me?”

His jaw dropped “oh ...my...Goodness. I…I just can't believe you forgot me. All the times we played together. He looked down and said I've missed you since you disappeared all those years ago. Why did you leave even when the clan found your mom you still could have come home. We know it was a bear that killed her…it wasn’t your fault.”

“Not to sound rude or anything but who are you and what are you talking about?” Asked Balto.

Tears welled in the wolfs eyes and said, “You really don't remember… do you?” Asked the wolf.

“No I'm so sorry but I don't.” Said Balto.

The wolf said, “I'm Nightsky I used to be your best friend. We looked forever for you after we found your mom the leader of the hidden clan torn to shreds after a bare attack, we thought you were dead. After that my dad became leader and when he died I became leader.”

He moved closer “Oh Balto please come home I wasn't sure it was you but now I know it is.” He started to cry.

“Oh don't cry.” said Jenna.

“I’m sorry but I don’t understand completely. I don’t remember you at all.”

He finally caught a grip and said, “I shouldn't have come...”

“Wait!” Balto called to him.

He looked at Balto. “Please stay… I may not remember but I'd like to...”

Nightsky's face lit up

“That’s what happened.” Said Cody to the other dogs on the team.

“I can't believe it.” Said Dusty.

“So your Father wants to remember his past.” said one of the older dogs.

“Yes he does so badly, I feel sorry for him, its like he's not my Dad anymore like he's an empty shell trying to find a crab to make his home in.” Said Cody. “I don't how else to explain it.”

“Cody?” A voice came from behind them.

“I'm Annaleese I'm from your father’s clan. I came to visit him one day and your mom got upset.” She smiled sweetly she had a kind and soothing voice. “I was just wondering if he was alright because I heard about last night.” She said.

“Yeah he's fine its just he is a little winded.”

“That does not sound like Balto it use to be if you got him to sit still for 5 seconds you were lucky.” Annalese smiled.

“He always had a kind heart too. He was just the kind of wolf everyone wanted to be around. He knew how to have fun.”

“Annaleese?” Said Cody.

“Yes?” She asked

“Do you by any chance know who my dad's father was?”

Annaleese shifted. “Not personally but he was the kind that ...well just wasn't there anymore.”

She turned to leave.

“Annaleese, I didn't mean to put you in an uncomfortable place but... I just wanted to know...”

She looked at him then said, “I don't mind but your father would always get quiet when we talked about him…Oh Cody you don't know how much he has change since he ran away. He was always happy and Nightsky is pained to see him so sad. But between you and me I think your father will never be the same as when his mom died. I mean it must have been awful for him to see it happen.”

“How you know he saw her die?”

“I just know besides he’ll never be the same.” Her expression was hard to tell if it was fake.

Cody looked at her and said. “ We’ll see about that”. Cody was blown away how could she say that? So what? Plus how did she know he saw his mom get killed?

“Bold
