“Then it’s settled. We shall have our loves for ourselves, while the wolf dog, and… what was his name… oh yes, Merlin, suffer,” said Steele. Raccoon and Steele had been plotting to get Jenna and Aleu away from their mates for three months. And it seemed like their plan would pay off. Raccoon nodded in agreement. “I want Aleu. You want Jenna. It seems like fate has brought us together so that we could have what we want,” said Raccoon.

“UNCLE BORIS! I’M So GLAD TO SEE YOU!” cried Aleu. “Believe it or not, I missed you,” she said with a lick to the beak. Boris was laughing, “I’m glad to see you too kiddo, from what Balto tells me, your now leader of wolf pack, no?” “Yep, and I want you to meet your new nieces and nephews!” “UNCLE BORIS!” they barked. “Now, pups, Uncle Boris isn’t a chew toy,” she said. The pups got off Boris and went over to their grandparents. “Grandma Jenna! Papa Balto!” they barked with glee. “We heard from the other town dogs that you were a big hero! Tell us the story!” cried the pups. Balto just laughed and looked at Jenna, then to Aleu, then to Merlin. “Oh, go ahead Balto,” said Jenna with a laugh.

Balto nodded and started the story. “Well, it was just a few years ago, when Nome was hit with a deadly sickness cal…” Aleu walked out with Merlin. “I bet you’re pretty proud of your dad huh?” he said. “Yep. He’s something else.”

Ch: 2

“Aleu… I foresee danger in your future…be on your guard…Aleu can you hear me?” “I hear you Aniu.” “I have a very urgent message, you must listen carefully!” said Aniu, but as she said so, her voice faded into the distance, because Aleu was being awakened by someone nudging her.

Aleu opened her eyes to see Lightning. “Mom, wake up! Grandma Jenna, and Papa Balto need to see you right away!” Aleu was on her paws immediately. “Where to?” “The boiler room,” he replied.

“Mom, dad, what is it?” “Its about Crescent, she was out in the woods, looking for squirrels, and never came back. Your father got a whiff of her and set out to look for her. But when he came to a clearing, he smelled other wolves, and saw that there was a struggle, we think you would recognize the second set of tracks,” said Jenna. “Second set? What about the first?” asked Aleu? “The first set was made by a malamute, named Steele. You should have heard of him when your father was telling the stories to you when you were a pup. But enough of Steele, lets find out about those second set of tracks.” Aleu nodded, “But first, I have to go and see Gemini. I need to talk to him first.”

“Gemini! Gemini! Excuse me, where can I find Gemini?” asked Aleu. “In the cave, he’s snoozing though, what’s the emergency?” asked the wolf. “I need to speak to him. Thank you,” she said without answering his question. She bounded into the cave and found Gemini, just drifting off to sleep. “Gemini! Wake up please! It’s important!” Gemini groaned a little bit, and then when he opened his eyes, he was on his paws faster than thunder. “What is it?” “It’s Crescent. She’s missing, I was wondering if you’ve seen her passing by?” “Yes, she was with a black and white malamute, and another wolf, she didn’t stop to say hello, she just pressed on as if she were on a quest,” he replied. “You said, a black and white malamute? Oh no!” With that, Aleu thanked Gemini and bounded back for Nome.

“I just spoke to Gemini, he did see Crescent, but she was with Steele, I have to see those paw prints!” said Aleu to her parents. “Ok, I’ll take you to them,” said Balto. “Mom. Would you look after Sunset and Lightning please!” “Of course.”

Ch: 3

Aleu and Balto bounded for the clearing. One they reached it, Aleu immediately saw what her mother meant by struggle. Snow was still over logs from being kicked up. She also saw three sets of tracks, and one thing she didn’t want to see. “Blood!” cried Aleu. She started to cry when her father put his paw on her shoulder, “Its ok, she’s still alive, there is only bits of blood, she’s been cut, no major damage. Remember what Gemini said?” Aleu nodded and examined the tracks. What she saw made her gasp. “You recognize them?” asked Balto. Tears gathering in her eyes, she nodded. “It’s a wolf that wont take no for an answer. I need to see Gemini again. You can come if you like.” Balto nodded and ran with her to see Gemini.

Gemini was awake this time, eating a rabbit that he caught. When he saw Aleu coming toward him with her father, he stood up to greet them and offered them the rest of the rabbit. Aleu was already crying. “Calm down Aleu, and tell me what’s wrong,” he said. Aleu looked at her father and he nodded, understanding what her pleading eyes were asking him. “Aleu recognizes the prints. But she wont tell me who they belong to, she insisted that you know first. All she said, was that it was a wolf that wouldn’t take no for an answer. Do you know who that would be?” A look of shock crossed Gemini’s eyes and he looked at Aleu. She understood his gaze and nodded. He sighed. “His name was Raccoon, we’ll tell you his story later, but some how he managed to cross the great water, and get here,” said Gemini. Balto looked at Aleu again, who was no longer crying, but had a fire in her eyes. “I want my daughter back! I don’t know what it’s going to take! But if he lay’s one tooth on her! I’ll kill him! If he harms one hair on her! I’ll kill him!” Aleu growled! “Now calm down Aleu! Remember, he’s with Steele, a very crafty dog. He used his mind to win all his races. With Steele on Raccoon’s side, there is a great chance that he and Raccoon have something in mind. A plan, I just cant figure out what Crescent has to do with it,” said Balto. “Have some rabbit, both of you, maybe it’ll lighten your spirits,” said Gemini.

Balto and Aleu thanked Gemini for his time and left at a quick pace back to Nome. “Mom! We’re here!” “In here Aleu!” she called back. Aleu and Balto followed Jenna’s voice and saw that she was telling a story to Lightning and Sunset, whom were dozing off. “I thought that they could use a nap,” whispered Jenna. Aleu nodded in agreement and laid down to rest. After some trouble, she dozed off.

Ch: 4

“Aleu… I foresee danger in your future…Aleu can you hear me?” “I hear you Aniu.” And with that the mists all around Aleu, formed a wolf, a wolf with a coat as white as snow. “Aleu, your daughter is not harmed, but she will be, what ever you do, don’t go rushing off!” “What does Crescent have to do with anything?” “I don’t know… but you must listen, you can be in terrible danger! Don’t go off alone!” she warned. And with a howl, she was gone.

Aleu awoke, still hearing Aniu’s warning in her ears.

But she remembered something. The wolf that held my tail when we were crossing! It was Raccoon! Thinking of all this was torturing her mind too much, she decided to go and hunt. “Good morning sweet heart,” said Merlin. “Good morning,” Aleu said with a yawn. “You’ve been out for almost a day. You ok?” “No. I am just so worried about Crescent. I hope she’s ok.” “I know, your dad is out looking for her right now.” “When we were crossing the great water, I told everyone to hold tails.” “I remember. Smart move.” “Well a wolf held my tail a little too tightly. I turned to see who it was, and the fog was so thick, I couldn’t make it out. But when Crescent disappeared, it turns out that Raccoon, had somehow gotten the message of crossing the great water.” A look of shock crossed Merlin’s eyes. “Do you think that he’s the pup napper?” “Think so? I know so. I recognized his paw prints.” Now Merlin had a look of worry on his eyes.

They continued talking until Aleu told him of her latest message from Aniu. “Well, you must be very special to have Aniu talk to you so much,” Merlin, said. “That she is,” said a voice behind her. They turned to see Balto walking in the boiler room. “What do you mean papa?” “Aniu is your grandmother. When I was out to look for you, I saw Aniu my self. Her fur as white as snow, a voice as warm as the sun, and eyes as gentle as the moon’s glow. I asked her myself if she was my mother, she nodded and howled as the mists carried away her spirit.” Now Aleu understood why Aniu had been speaking to her so much, she wanted to protect her. “Aniu told me not to go off into the woods alone. So I’m going hunting with Merlin.” “Ok. Be careful.”

Merlin and Aleu walked out into the forest in search of some beavers. “So what do you think Raccoon wants with Crescent?” “Please, don’t talk about it right now. I’m still in shock.” They were silent for a time. Until… “Halt! Which one of you is Aleu,” said a timber wolf. “I am,” said Aleu. “I have a message for you. Your daughter
