to her paw, and gently licked it.
Rayne tensed up a bit, but didn’t move, or protest.
Talkeet kept licking her paw, and then gradually moved his head up her leg, and shoulder, to her neck.
When he looked up, their noses touched.
Rayne looked scared.
Talkeet was somewhat short of breath.
“What’s wrong?”
Rayne shook her head.
“Bad memories, it’s fine.”
She smiled, and Talkeet nuzzled her.
He laid his head on her shoulder.
“Rayne I… I think I love you.”
She smiled again, and laid her head across his back.
“I think I do too.”
Talkeet pulled back a bit, and looked at her.
She smiled, and licked his nose.
Talkeet was somewhat surprised, but he soon regained his composure.
“I promise you Rayne,” He said, “I will get you out of here, even… even if it kills me.”
Rayne yawned.
“I’m tired,” she said.
Talkeet nodded, and the two of them laid down.
Soon they were both asleep,
Back in the cave, Dash walked into his chambers.
He couldn’t stay long, he had to get back to the fighting, but…
Well, he never knew if he’d come home or not, and he couldn’t come back to the cave, and leave again without seeing June.
As he walked in, he saw June walk in.
He smiled.
“Hey.”
Her face lit up when she saw him.
“Dash!”
She ran over to him,
“I’m always so worried about you when you’re out there!”
She nuzzled him.
“I’m glad you’re alright.”
Then she pulled back.
“.. or are you?”
Dash winced.
“I’ll be fine, it’s just a scratch.”
June frowned.
“It’s bleeding an awful lot for a scratch.”
Dash laughed.
“Don’t worry about me June, I’m fine.”
“Well lay down.” June said.
“What?” Dash asked.
“Look,” June said, “did I ask for a question and answer session, or did I tell you to lay down?”
Dash laid down.
June knelt beside him, and licked his shoulder.
It hurt, and it hurt a lot, but Dash didn’t say anything.
Gradually, the pain actually started to subside.
Dash closed his eyes, as June laid her head across his back.
She sighed.
“So, when do you go back out?”
“Soon.” Dash said.
June sighed again.
“I guess it needs to be done, but I wish it wasn’t you, or… or that you’d let me go with you.”
“No,” Dash said, “we’ve talked about that already. There is no way that I’m going to put you in harms way if I can at all help it.”
He turned his head back, and looked at her over his shoulder.
“I don’t think I could take losing you, not after…”
Dash sighed.
June smiled.
“Don’t worry Dash,” she said, rubbing her muzzle along his, “I’ll always be here, I’ll never leave you alone.”
Dash smiled.
“So, when is soon?” June asked.
“Tonight.” Dash said.
June sighed, then smiled.
“Well, at least we can spend the day together.”
“Yeah,” Dash said, “after I talk to Shadow, we probably can.”
June smiled.
“I love you Dash.”
Dash smiled and nuzzled her.
“I love you too June.”
“Hey.”
The voice came from out of no where.
June and Dash jumped.
Dash looked back, and saw Timbre standing, or leaning on the wall was actually a better description, in the entrance to the chamber.
“Timbre?” Dash asked.
Timbre nodded.
“I’m not interrupting anything am I?”
June stood up.
“Well come in, come in, it looks like you’re hurt too.”
Timbre nodded.
“What’s up?” Dash asked, also standing, and walking toward his friend.
“What are you doing here, you should be lying down.”
Timbre sighed.
“I would if I had a place to lay down.
“What do you mean?” Dash asked.
Timbre sighed again.
“Melody and I got into a spat over my fighting with the team.”
“She wants you to quit, now, in the middle of the war?” June asked.
Timbre nodded.
“Well that’s… that’s just crazy.” Dash said.
Timbre nodded again.
“So, would it be okay for me to lay down in here?”
“Well…. sure.” June said.
Dash frowned.
“I’m gonna go talk to my sister.”
He started to walk out of the chamber, when Timbre stopped him.
“Don’t’ please.” Timbre said. “Let her think about it for a bit, and then I’ll go do it. This is something that she and I must deal with together.”
Dash sighed.
“Alright, but if you need help, you come get me.”
Timbre nodded.
Dash turned to June, who walked over to him.
“Hey June, I’m gonna go talk to Shadow, and then we’ll go on that walk.”
June smiled.
“Okay.”
Dash kissed her on the cheek, and then turned and walked out of the chamber.
Dash stepped into Shadow and Aleu’s chambers.
Shadow was talking to Aleu, and she laughed softly.
Then she saw Dash.
“Dash!” She said.
Shadow turned around.
“Dash, what are you doing back?”
As Dash walked over to them, Shadow noticed the blood on his shoulder.
“Are… are you hurt?”
“It’s not bad,” Dash said, as he stopped walking. “I came back because Timbre was hurt pretty bad, got hit on the back of the neck.”
“Is he okay?” Aleu asked.
Dash nodded.
“I think so.”
“Well,” Shadow said, “how are things going out there?”
“As you know,” Dash said, “we attacked the Uniea’s first line of defense. We pushed them back, and Lightning gave chase. I thought it wise to keep some of our forces in our territory, and I had to bring Timbre back, so I had his and my units stand by there, at the territory line.”
Shadow nodded.
“Do you know how Lightning’s doing?”
Dash shook his head.
“There’s rate … Shadow, there’s something I think you should know…”
“What’s that Dash?” Shadow asked.
“Well,” Dash started, “Timbre is in my chambers.”
“What?” Aleu said.
“I guess he and Melody got into a spat over him quitting the team, and he walked out.”
“Great,” Aleu said.
“She wanted him to quit the team in the middle of the war?” Shadow asked.
“I know,” Dash said, “it didn’t make any sense to me either.”
“I’ll talk to her.” Aleu said.
Shadow nodded, and Aleu walked away.
“Thank you for telling us.” Shadow said. “This is something we need to resolve as soon as possible.”
Dash nodded.
“You got anything for me to do here Shadow?” Dash asked.
Shadow shook his head.
“Go spend some time with June.”
“Thanks,” Dash said.
“Go on,” Shadow said, “you can return to your unit tomorrow.”
Dash nodded, and walked from the chamber.
Chapter Seven
Talkeet sat in his chamber, his prison.
Rayne had been called out about two hours ago.
It bothered him deeply, and completely infuriated him to think of what they were doing to her now.
“That’s it.” Talkeet thought, “today is the day.”
How he was going to take on eight guards, he had no idea, but he was sure of one thing.
Rayne would get free today, no matter what the price.
Talkeet began to think back to just one day after he joined the team, in his first training session with Shadow….
Talkeet walked into the chamber, and over to Shadow, who was standing by the ledge.
The ledge was Aleu’s favorite place in the cave, and Talkeet had to agree, the view was breathtaking.
The distant mountains adorned the horizon, and the thick forest, always covered in snow, covered the ground as far as the eye could see.
All this was seen from the hole, which spanned the entire outer wall, in actuality, there was no wall.
Talkeet sat beside Shadow.
“Talkeet,” Shadow said, “are you ready to learn what I have to teach you?”
“Yes sir,” Talkeet said.
“Alright Talkeet,” Shadow said.
He turned and faced Talkeet.
“Talkeet, I teach this part of the training myself, because it is very important, among the most important thing you will be told in your entire life, because your life is at stake if you should choose not to follow my directions.”
Talkeet nodded.
“Now Talkeet,” Shadow began. “There are two distinct different methods of fighting; the fire method, and the water method. I’m going to teach you about the water method, as that is the only one that we, as the Talbourne, practice.”
Shadow paused.
“Talkeet, the name means something, tell me, what does water do?”
Talkeet looked confused.
“It flows?”
Shadow nodded.
“Correct, it flows, see that river down
