pain.

Shasta had been killed about a year prior to this day.

“Wow,” he thought, “has it really been a whole year?”

Dash had gotten together with June then, and was glad, he’d found something in her, that came as close as he wanted to replacing Shasta in his life.

But back to Timbre…

Timbre and Dash had become fairly good friends, or so Dash thought.

The Talbourne were attacked by a rival pack led by a wolf named Eiko.

Eiko had made it to the cave, and there, Timbre betrayed him, and Aleu.

He was a spy.

Dash was captured by Eiko. And held at their cave.

During this time, everyone thought that Dash had been killed.

The pack sent the bad news to Dash’s parents, Balto and Jenna, in Nome.

His mother and Father had come to the cave, and they had brought Melody, his sister.

Melody met Timbre, and the two hit it off immediately.

Then she too found out who he was.

Dash wound up rescuing his sister, and the two of them escaped, or at least Dash did, his sister…

…well, he’d thought that she died, that Timbre killed her.

Eiko was mounting another attack on Aleu, with Timbre’s job being to kill Aleu.

Dash had run as fast as he could back to the cave, but by the time he’d gotten there, the battle was already underway.

His sister showed up not too long after that, and Timbre chose his love for her over Eiko.

Timbre fought Eiko, defending her, and thus redeemed himself.

He pledged his allegiance to Aleu, and he and Melody had become mates.

Dash and Timbre had grown close over the years, comforting each other through the tough times, and enjoying the good ones together as well.

Dash remembered when Timbre’s pups were born, and he remembered his friend’s presence when his own came to be.

Were it not for Timbre and June, he could never have come to terms with Shasta’s death.

He would’ve killed himself.

Dash just couldn’t cope with that on his own.

Now, Dash was willing to give his own life for Timbre, and knew his friend felt the same about him.

About this time Dash reached the cave.

He began to make his way up to his sister’s chambers.

Dash finally stumbled into Timbre’s chambers.

Melody walked in, smiling, she had her eyes closed, and didn’t see who Dash had on his back.

She opened her eyes.

“Can I help….”

Her voice trailed off, as she realized who the visitor was.

“Dash!” she said.

She ran over to him.

Dash let Timbre slide to the floor.

Melody didn’t notice.

She nuzzled her brother.

“What happened to you?!”

It was then that she saw who Dash had been carrying.

“Timbre!”

She knelt beside him, and licked his nose.

There was no response.

“Oh my God!” She said, “Dash, what…. what happened?!”

Dash was out of breath.

“Hang…. Hang on… just… just a… second.” He said.

Dash took a minute to catch his breath.

“We were attacking a group of Uniea, and he was injured.”

“Is he alright?!” Melody asked.

“I think so,” Dash said.

He winced.

Melody stood up.

“Are you okay bro? You’re bleeding!”

Dash nodded.

“I know, I’ll be fine….”

He winced again.

“… it hurts, but I’ll live.”

Timbre groaned.

Melody’s attention switched back to him then, and she knelt at his side, covering the side of his face with kisses.

“OH Timbre! I was so worried, don’t you ever do that again!”

“Believe me,” Timbre said softly, “I’ll do my best.”

He paused.

“Man, I feel horrible.”

Dash stepped up to his friend’s side.

“It’s probably from the loss of blood, you passed out.”

“I did didn’t I?” Talkeet said.

Dash nodded.

Timbre thought about this for a minute.

“Wait, how did I get here?”

“I carried you.” Dash said, “you should think about going on a diet.”

Timbre smiled, and then, he found that hurt, a lot.

“That’s good Dash.” He said.

Dash laughed with him for a minute.

Hey buddy,” Timbre said, “you’re hurt too.”

“I know,” Dash said.

He smiled, despite the pain he was in.

“I’m gonna go see June. I’ll be back by later.”

Melody nodded, and nuzzled Timbre.

“I’ll take good care of him bro, don’t you worry.”

Dash laughed.

“I’m not.”

Then he walked out of the chamber.

Melody laid her head on top of Timbre’s.

“Timbre, I…”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I thought I’d lost you.”

Timbre just groaned and closed his eyes.

“I love you Timbre,” Melody said, “and… and I don’t want anything to happen to you. Today was too close, what if… what if it happens next time?”

“Melody,” Timbre said, “I thought we talked this over last week. The pack needs me, especially right now.”

“Yeah,” Melody said, “but you didn’t almost die last week, I… I think it’s time to start thinking about what we talked about.”

“What?” Timbre asked. “You… you want me to quit the team, just leave them in the middle of this war with the Uniea?”

Melody nodded.

“I can’t stand this any longer.”

“Melody…”

Melody looked up at him.

“Timbre, do… do you love me?”

Timbre sighed.

“…because….”

Melody’s eyes were clouded with tears again.

“… because I don’t know how much longer I can deal with this… I… I love you so much Timbre, but…”

Melody hung her head.

“But?” Timbre asked.

She looked back up at him.

“If you really love me, you’ll do this one thing for me.”

Timbre felt an anger growing inside him.

“Oh come on Melody!” He yelled. “That’s not even fair!”

Melody just stared at him, tears running down her face.

“Don’t do this to me!” Timbre yelled, standing up.

He wavered on his feet a little, as if he might fall, but then he regained his balance.

“Timbre….” Melody said, “it’s…. it’s either your family… me, or the war.”

Timbre was stunned.

“I’m… I’m fighting for you, for our family, so you will be safe, don’t you understand that?! You… you think I like this?!”

She sighed, and more tears splattered on the rock.

“Timbre, it’s… it’s your decision, choose.”

Timbre took a step back, unable to believe what was happening.

“Well then… I’m…. I’m sorry it has to be this way Melody,” he said, “good-bye.”

Then he turned and began to limp out of the chamber.

“Timbre?” Melody asked.

Timbre stopped and turned, filled with a kind of anger he had never before experienced.

“You know what Melody!” He yelled. “I… I hate you, I hate you for doing this to me!”

Still more tears coursed down Melody’s face.

“I… I don’t even want to see you!” Timbre said.

His voice became softer.

“Just… just stay away from me.”

Then he sighed, turned and walked from the chamber.

Chapter Six

Talkeet had decided something.

Even if it killed him, he would get Rayne out of here

Talkeet had found that he really enjoyed talking to her.

Right now, she was laying against the far wall of the chamber.

She’d just returned from “entertaining” the pack.

She’d walked over to the wall, laid down, and told Talkeet that she wanted to be alone.

Rayne looked pretty bad to Talkeet. She’d had a black eye, and several scratches on her face. Someone had bitten her leg, and she was limping a bit. Her lip was busted, and blood ran out of the corners of her mouth.

Talkeet shook his head.

There had to be a way…

“Go for it.”

“Snow,” Talkeet thought, “I really don’t like it when you tell me things like this.”

“Oh come on,” Snow said. “I can read your thoughts remember? Do you want me to tell you what you’re thinking about right now?”

Talkeet felt his cheeks flush.

“No,” he thought, “I can read my own thoughts, remember?”

Snow laughed.

I suppose so… but… well, why are you fighting what you feel then?”

“I don’t know Snow,” Talkeet thought. “I don’t’ know…”

He stood up and walked over to Rayne.

As he approached, he heard sobbing.

It was Rayne, she was crying.

She had her paws over her face, but moved them, when she heard him walk over to her.

“Talkeet…” She said, “I… I told you… told you I wanted to be alone.”

Talkeet smiled.

“I can’t very well just sit over there and let you cry all by yourself can I?”

Rayne sighed.

“Talkeet, this… this time was… was really bad.”

Talkeet knelt beside her.

“Rayne, as surely as I am alive, I swear I’ll get you out of here.”

She smiled through her tears.

“Talkeet, that’s nice, but… but there’s just too many of them.”

She picked up her paw and shook it.

Talkeet noticed that someone had bitten it, and the top of it was covered in blood.

“That hurts.” She said.

Talkeet lowered his head close to her paw,
