Small Novel of an Attack: Golden Strike
Operation: Fish Trip
A Quiet Attack from a soldier’s viewpoint, middle of the battle field in 1925
near the end of summer. SSWD Fortified defence line.
Location: somewhere near White Mountain
End of the summer Situation Allied Assault.
It was once again a quiet day; I and my brother had just arrived in the 4th dog
division. We both were tired. We were lying in a ditch scanning the foggy
ground in front of us, we both shivered from the cold air and we didn’t speak.
My name is Rayne, my brother’s is Yukon.
Don’t know why but we were waiting for orders to do something. We both were tired
from keeping watch. Even though I hoped that something would come, it was too
quiet and that bothered me a lot.
Soon I felt that someone jumped into our ditch next to me. It was a German
shepherd, his black muzzle made him look a bit scary to me. I glanced at my
black-and-white brother who had white around his eyes. I myself looked the same
but dark golden-white. The only one of the litter who had taken after my
mother, and I was proud of it.
Sadly my mother is dead. My mind started wandering until I felt a slap across
my cheek. “Wake up mutt prepare for attack we will show those Nazis who is in
charge here!” The shepherd shouted at me. He was the second leader of the team
where I and my brother were.
”Yes sir!” I started but even for my own ears it sounded desperate. The officer
only smirked at me while he turned to Yukon.
”Listen you two, after a few minutes that hill over there will be in flames,”
the officer explained. Suddenly a second figure jumped into the ditch. He
panted heavily.
”OK boys prepare for a run!” The second dog shouted, he was a golden-white
husky almost like me, but he scared me a bit as well.
I raised my head to see the foggy ground, it was an open area. I shivered as I
thought about the attack and what kind of hell it would bring for me.
”Soldiers prepare yourselves,” I heard once again behind my back, I didn’t mind
to see who had said those words.
It was early morning still. It was cold, everyone’s breath turned into puffy
clouds. My mind explored again inside my head while I thought what to do, couldn’t
think of anything. I just hoped that this would end soon.
It was a quiet moment, everything was quiet and scary, a dead tree near the ditch
where I was.
I hoped that this battle would end soon, waiting was the worst thing that I
have faced. I had just come from training and what did I know? I didn’t know
anything of how to fight, just the basics.
”OK men get down!” One human voice shouted. I felt bad suddenly; I was going to
die in excitement.
Suddenly hell opened behind me. The ground shivered as I heard grenades fly atop
the US
stations and drop at the hill in front of us. The howling of grenades frightened
me a bit as they exploded sending ground into the air.
I didn’t see it clearly but I saw a light and heard a huge bang when a grenade
hit the ground. Smoke filled the air on the SSWD Line.
So far the orders went I only knew that when the attack would come everyone would
go. If it failed everyone would fall back to their line. The HQ would pull back
of course I didn’t know their orders.
I lay down on the ground pulling myself tighter against it, I was only a green
horn I feared this all. I then felt a paw on my back.
”It’s ok son those wont come to our station,” the shepherd said. I only sniffed
for an answer.
Soon the whole inferno in front of our station went quiet, only someone shouted
‘sanitär’. I didn’t know what this German word ‘Sani’ meant, but I thought it
meant ‘Medic’- the best friend of a soldier.
My thoughts were interrupted by a whistle and soon all squadrons started running
towards the SS line. Someone kicked my side forcing me to get up. I did so and
started running towards the SS line too.
I felt as fear grasped my mind but I kept running with the others. Human
soldiers’ bayonets shined a bit while they ran, dog soldiers ran next to them
like they were best friends.
The soldiers kept running but suddenly one of the first human soldiers stepped
onto an innocent-looking box which suddenly exploded. The soldier screamed in
pain when his leg flew into the air spraying blood about.
That shout woke the SS line and soon heavy machineguns opened fire. Bullets
flew near my head but I didn’t notice it, they were like flies- really nasty
ones.
I heard when bullets hit soldiers and their helmets.
”MOVE OUT! ATTACK!” One human
shouted when a heavy machine gun ripped him to pieces. Soon I heard whistling coming
from the sky.
”INCOMING!” Another soldier shouted when a huge explode threw him into the air.
His arm dropped onto my back but I still kept running towards the line. I saw
phosphore bullets flying near me.
A dog soldier in front of me suddenly threw his body backwards at me. Something
hit my head, it was nasty and tasted bad, I stopped running and cleaned the
stuff out of my face. Then I noticed that it was pieces of brain. I looked at
the soldier who had been running in front of me; his head had been cut open.
It made me feel sick and I vomited onto the ground- everything that I had eaten
before the attack came out. Soon I felt a hit and I started to follow the
leader who had nudged me.
The shepherd ran by my side but I lost view of him soon.
Suddenly a pressure wave threw me against the ground. All I could hear was beeping
sound. While I listened to the beeping I saw soldiers die near me. There were
more than 5 machine guns shooting at us.
The sound finally ended and I got up from the ditch where I had lain. While I
ran I saw my second leader. The shepherd dog was badly wounded for my first
glance at him. When I ran closer to him I got badly shocked. My leader had been
cut in half; I saw his intestines and inside his body.
”God how can he still live!” I shouted into the air but no one heard me. I ran
next to my leader who didn’t talk. He was very badly wounded- his muzzle was
gone, his left eye was hanging from its socket where it should have been, his
back leg was gone- it lay near some ditch. He still was alive?! I couldn’t say
anything.
I vomited again but I didn’t have anything to get out.
I then kept running towards the line. I saw dogs and humans dieing around me. The
numerous corpses slowed me down. Only fear controlled me.
Again a mine hit near me and I flew near yet another ditch. I got up fast and
jumped into the ditch.
”Welcome to hell soldier,” a voice welcomed me. I glanced at the soldier who had
said that. He was my brother. I nodded my head and watched a dog raise his head
to see what was going on. Suddenly his helmet flew off his head and his whole
body fell backwards against the ground- he had been hit by a sniper.
”Ouh my GOD!” I shouted and moved closer to the side of the ditch praying that
this all would be over soon. It wasn’t even close to being over.
Soon an officer jumped into the ditch, he was the husky one, his left eye was
gone, the only thing left was a deep pit.
”C’mon you two move out!” He shouted and then started running towards the SS
line.
I got up and so did my brother who was faster. He jumped out from the ditch, but
didn’t get far when a heavy mg’s fosfor bullet hit his chest. He flew backwards
onto me and we both fell back into the ditch.
I was shocked once again- my brother’s chest was open, his lungs were in pieces
and the flesh had been ripped. Luckily he was dead already. I started screaming,
what else could I have done? Our orders were simple: ‘move in and kill them all-
no mercy’.
I got up fast and again started running towards the SS line. The line finally
came into view. In front of me ran three dogs and six soldiers. Suddenly a flamethrower
sent its burning petrol atop these figures. I yelped in fear and jumped behind a
small rock watching as the soldiers ran around screaming desperately in flames.
It was horrifying, I was going to vomit again but I just couldn’t do so.
”Rayne!” A femme voice called and I turned my gaze at her. The female dog was
laying on the ground, her body was full of small holes that sent blood out. I
ran up to her dodging the fire that came from the line.
”Are you ok?” I first asked. I was stupid- she was dying already, I just didn’t
realise it. What I had heard about war- I had only seen and heard heroic works,
how weak SS is and how easy this war is. Now I had realised that it isn’t that at
all what I had heard, it is completely different- it made me cry. I watched her
blue eyes, her silver-white fur was covered with a uniform which was bloody and
her face had a sad look. She was dead already.
The only thing that I did was continued running. My brother is dead, the team leader is dead, now she is dead! I thought inside my
head.
Soon I threw my helmet off my head- a useless thing, it only made us look like
soldiers. Dogs don’t need helmets. I cursed while I threw it away and kept
running, the SS line out of views again. This time a grenade exploded in front
of me, sending me backwards once again. This time it was heavier than the first
one and I fell unconscious.
Had it been hours, days or minutes when I woke up? The whole front was quiet,
no voices, nothing to hear, which made me swallow deeply.
”Did we win?” I asked myself quietly watching a dead soldier whose stomach had
been ripped open, next to him lay a soldier whose head was gone; both dogs.
I wanted to cry but I couldn’t. Then I heard voices, someone was crying
somewhere. Then came a sudden loud
‘bang’. I went into panic thinking that my whole squadron had been killed.
I took off towards my own lines. I ran and ran not thinking, panting. “Dear God
NO!” I shouted while I ran. I arrived at my own lines, they were
