Balto: Kodi’s Disappearance

Balto: Kodi’s Disappearance

‘Come on guys, we must keep going.’ Kodi struggled to walk against the strong winds.

‘Kodi, some of us are cold, wet, hungry and tired. We can’t keep this up much longer. Not to mention that we’re lost!’ Star yelled to be heard.

‘We’re not lost! I’ll get us home.’ Although Kodi was secretly beginning to have doubts himself. We can’t be late, not again He thought to himself.

Kodi stopped all of a sudden, causing the mail dogs to bump into each other.

‘Ice.’ Kodi muttered.

‘What?’ the mail dogs starting muttering.

‘Thin ice, ahead of us guys. We can chance going along it, or we can around it, but it will take longer.’

‘I think’- Star began but was cut off by the sound of a tree falling. The tree fell on top of the mail dogs. Kodi was knocked unconscious.

‘Where are they?’ Jenna said, pacing back and forward.

‘Calm down, Jenna, I’m sure their fine.’ Balto said.

‘They should have been here days ago!’

‘Kodi will get them back.’ Balto said. Jenna still seemed worried, ‘Look, I’ll go out and look for them if they aren’t back tomorrow.’ This seemed to calm Jenna down. ‘I’m going to see Boris.’ Balto nuzzled Jenna and left.

‘Balto’s back!’ Muk cried. Muk and Luk hugged him.

‘Ok, guys…can’t…breathe…’ Balto said, Muk and Luk let go.

Boris appeared. ‘How do you survive it when they hug you?’ Balto asked him.

Boris grinned, ‘Threaten them.’

Kodi awoke feeling dizzy. He had no idea where he was, the mail dogs and the sled was no where to be seen. Kodi got up and pain shot through him. He looked back, his right hind leg stuck out in an odd angle. Kodi sighed and limped on.

Kodi had walked for what seemed like ages when he heard a roar. A bear! Kodi thought and tried to run, but ended up falling. Kodi’s strength had deserted him. He tried to get up but failed, he crawled. He could smell the bear behind him, getting closer. Another roar and Kodi froze with fear. Kodi turned and seen the tall bear. Kodi’s strength returned and Kodi leapt up and ran.

When Kodi was sure the bear was miles behind, Kodi stopped for breath. Something hit Kodi’s head which sent him flying.

Kodi was dizzy. He saw the bear and his eyes filed with fear. The bear hit him, sending him flying again, he got up and took a step back. His paw touched thin air, he looked behind him and discovered he was on a cliff, and knew that if he fell, he would die.

Balto yawned sleepily then, remembering Kodi, he jumped up and ran to see Jenna.

‘Balto, their not back.’ Jenna said, worriedly.

‘I’ll go out and look for them.’ Balto said.

How does that dog manage to be late all the time? Balto wondered to himself.

‘Kodi!’ Balto called. No answer That cant be good, Balto thought. Balto sniffed and caught Kodi’s scent. He found tracks and followed them. He found the sled, the musher was lying unconscious. Star and the mail dogs were lying, crushed by a tree. Balto ran to Star and shook him. Balto realized he was getting no where and gave up. He looked down, their was tracks, followed by, Balto gulped, Bear tracks. Balto followed them, praying that the tracks weren’t Kodi’s.

Balto marked the trees as he went. He smelt the bear and knew it was close. Balto kept walking and soon found the bear. A body lay in the snow. Balto gasped, it was covered in blood. It was Kodi.

‘Kodi!’ Balto yelled, forgetting the bear, he ran to his son. He licked him and Kodi stirred.

‘Dad?’ Balto nodded and turned to the bear. The bear roared and Balto tucked him tail between his legs, knowing he wouldn’t be able to defeat the bear. Balto leapt on the bear and bit him. The bear roared in pain and shook Balto off. Balto landed on the ground, shook his head and got back up. The bear was over Kodi, with its paw raised.

‘No!’ Balto yelled and ran, he pounced and bit the bears nose. The bear shook him off but Balto held on tight. Kodi got up, weakly and realized what was going on.

‘Dad!’ Kodi yelled as the bear finally succeeded in shaking Balto off. Balto was knocked flying and clung for life on the edge of the cliff.

‘I’m fine, Kodi, get the bear off the end, it’s the only way to defeat him.’ Balto said, he tried pulling himself up but the rock he held onto, cracked. Balto panicked and grabbed onto another bit. He succeeded in pulling himself up. Balto and Kodi eventually knocked the bear off the cliff.

‘Good job, son.’ Balto sighed. ‘Lets get back to the mail dogs.’ Balto suddenly colasped.

‘Dad, are you OK?’ Kodi asked.

‘Yeah…fine, just tired.’ Balto muttered, Kodi helped him up.

Kodi howled, they were on their way back. It was night, Nome had been silent until Kodi howled. Jenna rushed out.

‘Kodi!’ Jenna hugged him.

‘Hi mum.’

‘Wait a minute, wheres Balto?’ Jenna asked. Kodi unhooked himself and took her the sled where Balto and the musher lay unconscious.

‘Balto.’ Jena nuzzled Balto.

Balto awoke. ‘Jenna.’ He hugged her.

‘What happened?’ Jenna asked.

‘Attacked by a bear.’ Kodi said.

‘I’m fine. Just need to rest a bit…’ Balto got up. Balto looked at Kodi, ‘Well done, you remembered the way.’

‘That I got off of you.’ Kodi grinned.

‘We’d better get you both to the vet.’ Jenna looked at Kodi’s coat.

They walked off to the vet together.
