as real as the two of them standing there.
Jenna smiled.
“You know Balto, for what everyone says about you… you’re not a bad guy.”
Balto sighed.
“You’re about the only dog that has ever given me a chance.”
He smiled.
“I’m glad you did.”
Jenna sighed.
“Balto…. I was meaning to tell you, I’m…. I’m really sorry about the way I treated you the other day.”
Balto smiled.
“Don’t worry about it, today made up for it a thousand times over.”
Jenna sighed.
“No really, I… I shouldn’t have treated you that way, not after all you had done was be kind to me. That was horrible.”
Balto put his paw on the side of her face, and again felt that jolt, only now it seemed to slowly travel down from his paw and slowly working it’s way up to his shoulder, and to his face, filling his body with warmth.
“I said don’t worry about it, it’s in the past.”
Jenna smiled.
“You’re so understanding.”
Balto smiled.
“Well I wouldn’t want to alienate my only friend.”
Jenna smiled.
“Yeah, I guess not.”
Balto stared at her, as the northern lights lit up the sky.
Jenna was awestruck.
“Wow…”
Balto smiled.
“They’re beautiful aren’t they?”
Jenna nodded.
“I’ve never seen them like this, out away from everything...”
“I see them all the time.” Balto said
“You’re lucky…” Jenna said.
Balto sighed.
“Yeah…”
Jenna turned, to see him looking right at her.
A strange feeling came over her then, a tightness in her throat, and almost… fear, but it felt strangely good.
Jenna was briefly aware of their faces drawing nearer to one another, then when their noses were about to touch, Jenna stepped away.
Balto smiled.
“I… I better get home…” Jenna said. “It’s late and Rosie will be getting worried about me.”
Balto sighed.
“Yeah, you better go…”
Jenna backed away.
“Thank you for taking care of me Balto.”
Balto smiled.
“Anytime.”
“So… I guess I’ll… see you in town sometime then…”
Balto nodded.
“As much as you want.”
Jenna felt odd, almost uncomfortable, and her mind was spinning at a massive rate.
“What are you doing Jenna?” She asked herself. “You have truly lost your mind, you’re way out there now…”
But try as she might, Jenna couldn’t shake the feelings she now felt for this outcast wolf dog named Balto. She knew in her heart that she’d never be the same after tonight.
“Well…. bye.” Jenna said.
Balto sighed.
“Bye Jenna.”
Jenna turned around and sprinted down the gangplank.
Balto sighed as he watched her vanish from view.
“Good-bye Jenna….” He said aloud.
Then he walked down into the boat.
Drake was waiting for Jenna at her home.
“Are you alright?” He asked, moving to nuzzle her. “I was worried sick about you.”
Jenna stepped back, forgetting about Balto for a second, and becoming instantly enraged at Drake.
“Yeah, I’m fine, no thanks to you!” She snapped.
“Jenna…” Drake started.
“Drake, you left me out there, left me for dead, or worse…”
Drake sighed.
“Jenna, please…”
“No Drake, you know who saved me?”
Drake looked concerned.
“Who?”
“Balto.” Jenna said. “He risked his life for me, and took me home and cared for me afterward.”
Drake sighed again.
“Drake…” Jenna said, “… I… I don’t want to talk to you right now, we’ll do it later, not now, I’m tired and my head hurts.”
She walked passed Drake and up the steps to her home.
“Jenna…” Drake started again, but stopped as Jenna stepped through the doggy door into the house.
Drake sighed again and walked away.
Chapter 10
Balto smiled at Jenna.
And that leads up to the next week, when Rosie got sick, right?”
Jenna nodded.
“And a series of events that would change both of out lives forever.”
Balto smiled and nuzzled her.
“I hope.”
Jenna smiled, and laid her head on his.
“Balto, if we overcame Angel, we can overcome anything.”
Balto sighed.
“Yeah…”
“How are the pups doing today?” Balto asked, changing the topic of discussion.
Jenna laughed.
“Oh, they slept all day, and will probably keep me up all night as usual.
Balto laughed.
“Kids.” He said.
Jenna nodded.
“Balto… I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that…”
Balto looked concerned.
“What? The kids?”
Jenna shook her head.
“Well, kind of…”
She sighed.
“Look Balto, I think after these two… well, we’re not puppies anymore, if you get my meaning…”
Balto nodded.
“Yeah, I was kinda thinking the same.”
Jenna nodded.
“I’ll miss them, I love having kids, someone to take care of, and nurture.”
Balto nodded.
Jenna suddenly looked very tired.
“… but they’re also so much work…”
She sighed.
“Balto, do you remember what it was like before we had pups? When it was just us?”
Balto smiled and nodded.
“All the late night walks, and spending time together… we haven’t had time to do that much at all, because of the kids… and I miss it.”
Balto smiled and nodded.
“Yeah… me too.”
Jenna smiled.
“… anyway, I’m glad you agree.”
Balto nodded.
“Yeah, I see what you mean.”
Jenna picked her head up and looked t Balto for a minute.
“I love you Balto, more than anything else in the whole world, and I don’t want anything to come between us, to pry us apart, not ever again. Those few weeks after Angel… Balto they almost killed me, for real, I’m… I’m lost without you.”
Balto slowly nodded.
“I know exactly what you’re saying.”
Jenna sighed.
“Anyway, I think that… well, since we don’t live together, I think the kids are pulling us away from each other, because I have to be here to take care of them, and you… well, you come by and talk, but it’s not the same as it used to be.”
Balto nodded again.
“I’ve noticed it too. We just… we don’t seem to be as close.”
Jenna nodded.
Balto smiled.
“Well, I guess grandkids will keep us busy enough after this, huh?”
Jenna laughed.
“Yeah, I guess so.”
Jenna yawned.
Balto stood up, and Jenna slowly followed.
“You look tired.” Balto said.
Jenna yawned and nodded.
“I…. I am, I haven’t slept in… three days.”
She sighed.
“I love them to death, but I wish they’d let me sleep.”
“Tell you what,” Balto said. “I’ll watch them tomorrow, and you can go to town, talk to Dixie or something.”
Jenna smiled.
“Balto… you don’t have to do that… I know you and Kodi have something planned tomorrow.”
Balto out his paw on his shoulder.
“We can do that anytime, and he’ll understand. You’re going to go have a day off, and you’re going to enjoy it.”
Jenna smiled.
“Well… okay, I could use a day to myself.”
“… but right now,” Balto said, “you’re going to go inside, and sleep, because you look like you’re going to fall off the porch.”
Jenna yawned again.
“Yeah, I am tired…”
She smiled.
“Well it was nice to sit and talk with you Balto.”
“Same here.” Balto said. “We’re going to do this more often. We used to all the time, at least once a day, but…”
Jenna finished for him.
“…. But I guess we grew up and got too busy.”
Balto’s face took on a very serious look then.
“I’m never, ever, too busy for you.” He said. “I’ll cancel whatever I have to, to spend time with you.”
Jenna smiled, and then yawned.
“Well, I guess I better be getting inside…”
Balto nodded.
“Yep.”
Jenna walked over, licked Balto on the nose, and stepped back.
“I really do love you Balto, I have ever since that night on your boat…”
“Me too.” Balto said.
“Good-night,” Jenna said, as she turned and walked towards the door.
“Night.” Balto said.
As Jenna stepped through the doggy door, Balto called out.
“And I’ll be by about seven for the kids, and I don’t want to see you again until at least five…”
Jenna slipped inside the house.
She poked her head out of the door.
“I heard you.” She said, “and thanks.”
Balto smiled, as she disappeared once more.
He stepped lightly off the porch.
Why had he even come over here…. He’d completely forgotten.
Then he remembered.
“Aleu…” he thought
Balto picked up his pace a bit, hoping that, in the time that he’d spent at Jenna’s, Aleu hadn’t done anything rash or
