Chapter 1

Balto walked up to Jenna’s home.

It was really early, and he didn’t know if she’d be up still or not, but he wanted to talk to her.

Aleu was getting increasingly more and more down about losing her pack to the Uniea, and was talking about going back, and trying to take it from them.

That was suicide.

Balto had gone to check, and Talkeet’s second in command, Gareth, had fortified the cave pretty well with his soldiers.

It would be some time before he let his guard down enough for Aleu to carry out an attack successfully.

So, that was why Balto was walking up the steps to Jenna’s porch.

He had to find a way to convince Aleu not to go back, and he thought Jenna might be able to talk her out of it.

He reached the door then, and scratched on it.

No answer.

Balto slipped inside the house, into the living room, where Jenna lay, snug in her bed beside the fire.

He walked over to her, and stood over her for a minute, just watching her.

“She’s so beautiful.” Balto thought.

The fact they were together still made little sense to him.

Who’d have thought that the most popular and beautiful girl in town would hook up with the outcast?

“Certainly not me,” Balto thought.

Jenna had never told him just what made her change her mind, but he had a good idea that the majority of it had been the fact that he’d saved her owner, Rosie’s, life.

As he continued to watch her, he thought of all the times they had cheated certain death together, how many times that all hope seemed lost, and then something showed up and changed everything.

He smiled, and knelt down beside her.

Balto watched her a moment more before he tenderly licked the side of her face.

Her eyes fluttered open.

“Hey Balto,” she said, “what’s up?”

“Well Jen,” Balto said, “I really need to talk to you.”

“Well… okay.” Jenna said.

She stood up and followed Balto outside,

Balto and Jenna stepped outside and into the chilling Alaskan night.

“Balto do you have….” Jenna started.

She yawned.

“… have any idea what time it is?”

Balto nodded.

“Yeah, and I’m sorry to wake you Jen, but… it’s about Aleu.”

“Oh?” Jenna said. “What about her?”

Balto sighed.

“She’s really depressed about losing her pack, and she wants to go back, but they’re too strong right now. An attack would be…. well, unsuccessful…”

Jenna nodded and yawned again.

“… anyway,” Balto continued. “She won’t listen to me, and I don’t know anyone else who could convince her, except maybe you.”

Jenna sighed.

“Yeah, she tends to listen to me, doesn’t she?”

Jenna smiled, and leaned against Balto.

“Unlike some other people…”

“What?” Balto said, a smile coming to his face. “who are you talking about?”

Jenna laughed.

“Oh I don’t know…”

She looked up at him.

“… someone.”

Jenna laid down on the porch, and Balto laid down beside her.

The two of them snuggled, and it was quiet for a while.

“The country side is so beautiful in the winter.” Jenna said.

“Yeah,” Balto said.

There was a significant pause before Jenna sighed, and laid her head on his shoulder.

“Balto… … do you remember how we met?”

Balto smiled, remembering.

“How could I forget, I was such a klutz then.”

Jenna laughed.

“You were not.”

“Yeah I was,” Balto said, “just think, I might not have ever met you had it not been for me falling off that roof.”

“Yeah,” Jenna said. “Things would be a lot different then, wouldn’t they?”

Balto nodded silently.

“Jenna,” Balto said, looking down at her. “Do you… well, I’m kind of embarrassed to talk about it, but…”

He stopped.

“What is it Balto?” Jenna asked.

“Well, you remember that one time that you were… well… when you made fun of me?”

Jenna sighed.

“Yeah…” she said.

“Well, I was just wondering, you… you looked kind of close to Steele then, and well, you never talked about it, and I was just wondering… well, wondering what… or how you… well, you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, but… was there anything… between you two?”

Jenna smiled.

“Balto…”

“Well, I mean you don’t have to tell me if you don’t feel comfortable, I just…”

Jenna smiled again.

“Balto, I’ll tell you, but in order to do that, I’ll have to start with when I first met Dixie and Sylvie.”

“Dixie and Sylvie?” Balto said.

Jenna nodded.

“It all started the first day that I got to Nome…

Chapter 2

The little girl named Rosie knelt down beside her small dog, a husky named Jenna.

Rosie laughed.

“Okay Jen, I know you want to see the town, and make new friends, but you be careful out there, and be back before it’s too late, okay?”

Jenna licked Rosie’s nose and the girl laughed again, and hugged her dog.

“I love you Jenna, I’m glad you got to come with us.’

Jenna barked, and Rosie stood up and walked away.

Jenna walked out onto the porch of her new home, and laid down.

She sighed.

She was trying to appear strong in front of Rosie, but…

A tear rolled down her face, and was son followed by another.

“I miss home so much.” She thought.

She put her paws over her face.

If it wasn’t bad enough that she’d had to leave her mom, all of her friends, and well… home, her father hadn’t even said good-bye.

“He probably forgot.” Jenna thought. “He wasn’t ever there for me, hardly ever, but you’d think at least he’d say good-bye.”

Jenna hadn’t wanted to believe it, had hidden from Rosie and her family, waiting, just hoping that her dad would show up…

But he didn’t.

Jenna sighed again.

“I can’t believe it…” Jenna thought, “I knew he didn’t care, racing was always priority for him, but… I was leaving, forever, and he didn’t even say good-bye, or good luck… or anything.”

She sniffled, and held her breath to keep from crying anymore.

Well screw him then.” Jenna thought. “I’m not going to be sad, I never had a dad anyway, he was never there… ever.”

Now Jenna was in Nome, two hundred miles away from where she’d been born, the small port town of Shishmaref, Alaska.

She was so busy thinking, that she didn’t see the small gray dog that climbed the porch steps, and stood right in front of her.

The dog put her nose just inches away from Jenna’s, and said.

“How’re you?”

Jenna jumped, and then saw the dog.

She laid back down, and sniffled again.

“Not too good.”

“The small dog looked concerned, and walked over to her, sitting beside Jenna.

“What’s wrong?”

“Just… just homesick I guess.” Jenna said, wiping the few remaining tears out of her eyes with her paw.

“So are you new then?” The dog asked. “I didn’t think I’d seen you around.”

Jenna nodded.

“I just got here last night.”

“So where are you from?” The dog asked.

“I’d…”

Jenna sighed.

“I’d rather not talk about that right now.”

The dog winced.

“Sorry, I didn’t think…”

Jenna smiled.

“It’s alright.”

“So what’s your name?” The dog asked.

Jenna brightened a bit.

“Jenna.”

“Mine’s Dixie.” The small dog said.

“Nice to meet you Dixie.” Jenna said.

Dixie smiled.

“Hey, I got an idea!”

“What’s that?” Jenna asked.

“Well,” Dixie said, “I’m on my way to meet my friend Sylvie, how would
