Chapter 1
Balto was walking down the street, toward his old home.
Balto had decided that it was best to keep Jenna away from her family for the time being, until he could find a way to make her remember.
He sighed.
It had been almost two months since the leader of the Uniea, Gareth, had used her to bring Shade into this world, and in the process, wiped her memory.
She still didn’t remember anything, but she was re-learning.
Slowly but surely, Jenna was changing back into the dog he knew and loved, but she was a little different, their bond wasn’t as strong as it had been, built up by Balto telling her of events, rather than she experiencing them herself.
For now, Balto was keeping her with Tim and Tycha, at the old trawler that used to be his own home.
He could see it now, and ran across the field, bounded up the top, and was greeted by Jenna at the top.
“Hey Balto!” She said. “Have a good day?”
Balto nodded.
“For the most part.”
She smiled.
“Great!”
Jenna turned and walked back down into the boat.
Balto sighed as he watched her.
“Come on Balto!” Jenna said. “You’re going to miss your dinner.”
Balto smiled.
“I’ll be down in a minute Jen.”
He turned to Tim, and Tycha, who were beside him.
“Any improvement at all?”
Tim shook his head.
“Not yet.”
Balto sighed.
“I keep hoping that this is temporary, that one day she’ll wake up and remember me again, for me, for what has happened to s over the years, not… not just what I’ve told her.”
He sighed again and walked forward.
“But every day, it seems more and more like this is permanent.”
It was the next day, and Balto was standing outside Aleu’s cave.
He’d decided to come speak to her, see if she knew anything about her mother’s… condition.
He walked forward and was stopped by the sentry outside.
“Hey you, stop… oh, dad, it’s you.”
Balto smiled.
“How’re you doing Dash?”
Dash smiled back.
“Pretty good dad, it’s great to be home.”
Balto nodded.
“Yeah, I know the feeling.”
“How’s mom?” Dash asked.
“Balto sighed and hung his head/
“Same.”
“Well… what brings you here?” Dash asked.
“I need to speak with Aleu.” Balto said. “I need to ask her something.”
“About mom?” Dash asked.
Balto nodded.
“She should be in her chambers.” Dash said, “you know where it is, right?”
Balto nodded.
“Hope to see you soon Dad.” Dash said.
Balto nodded, and walked into the cave.
“I’m sorry dad, but I’ve never heard of that happening before, and neither has Nava. I asked him.”
Balto sighed.
“Aleu, I don’t know what to do.”
He sat on the floor.
A tear rolled out of his eye.
“I… miss her, your mother, the way she used to be… so much…”
He took a deep breath, and Aleu sat beside him.
“It’s almost like she’s a completely different dog, I guess…”
Balto paused and hung his head.
“… I guess she really is dead.”
Aleu sighed.
“Dad, I… I have an idea.”
Balto looked up at her.
“What is that?”
“Well, why don’t you try speaking to Aniu about it?”
“Aniu?” Balto said, “My mother.”
Aleu nodded.
“She knows everything there is to know, I’m sure that if anyone can help you, she can.”
Balto nodded.
“That‘s a good idea.”
“You remember how to get there?” Aleu asked.
Balto nodded again.
He smiled.
“Thank you Aleu, I guess… I guess I just needed someone to talk to, I’m feeling a little better already.”
Aleu smiled.
“Good, I’m glad.”
She turned her head.
“Sheik Lima Thunder and Shadow, come on, let’s go get something to eat.”
She turned to Balto.
“Dad, you hungry?”
“Sure.” Balto said.
Aleu smiled.
“Come on then, we’ve got food enough.”
Balto smiled and followed Aleu back into the chamber.
Later that night, Balto was home.
He’d spent all day at Aleu’s, and it had been dark by the time he left.
Balto had went by to see Jenna, but she was asleep, and Balto found he didn’t really feel like talking to her right now anyway, so he’d come home.
Luke was already asleep, so Balto let himself in, via the living room window, and laid down.
He didn’t even feel like eating.
“I miss her so much.” Balto said quietly. “The communion we shared with one another was something that I’d hoped never to lose, and now… I have.”
He sighed and walked over to his bed.
“Maybe they’ll be some help tonight.” Balto thought.
He laid down on his bed by the fire, and looked out the window.
The aura borealis blazed across the sky, lighting up the frozen fields of snow, and casting light on the small town of Nome.
“If you’re listening, I could really use some help mom.” Balto said quietly.
Then he laid his head down, and was soon fast asleep.
Chapter 2
Balto woke in a cave.
Well I’m here.” He said.
Balto stood up.
“Something bothering you?”
Balto turned.
“Hey dad.”
Balto’s eyes filled with tears.
“Jadze.”
She smiled.
“I already know why you’re here, and Aniu will speak to you shortly, but I just wanted to talk to you. How you been?”
Balto smiled.
“Pretty good..”
He sighed.
“… well, until recently anyway.”
Jadze walked over to him.
“Dad no matter what happens to you, or the ones you love, never lose faith in Aniu. She can see much further, can see much greater good in things than you could ever possibly imagine.”
Balto nodded.
“Well, I believe Aniu is coming, so I’ll leave you alone.”
She turned and as she faded away, Balto heard her voice.
“Take care of yourself dad.”
Balto smiled.
“You too, Jadze.”
“Is something troubling you my son?”
Balto recognized the voice immediately, and turned.”
“Mother?”
The white wolf nodded, and walked forward.
“What’s wrong?”
“I’m sure you know of Jenna…”
Aniu sighed.
“This is why you are here?”
Balto nodded.
“Is there anyway to save her?”
Aniu shook her head.
“Not the one that you know now. The Jenna you knew is lost.”
Balto’s ears drooped.
“Well, I had been hoping for better news.”
He turned.
“Well if that’s true then I won’t bother you any longer.”
He started to walk away.
“Wait,” Aniu said.
Balto turned, and Aniu smiled.
“I said she was lost my son, not that she couldn’t be found.”
Balto became excited.
“Then there is a way to get her back?”
Aniu nodded.
“But it is complicated, and the journey will not be an easy one.”
Balto walked back to her.
“I don’t care, mother I will do anything, ANYTHING to get her back.”
Aniu nodded.
“I know this, and I am proud of the dog you have turned out to be.”
“So how, how do I do it?” Balto asked.
“When Shade used Jenna’s soul to cross the plains, he did so intending to send it to hell.”
Balto gasped.
“But the rules wouldn’t let him.”
“Rules?” Balto asked.
Aniu smiled.
“Every power in nature has a check, something to keep it from growing all powerful, from upsetting the delicate balance that enables life to flourish. Even as strong as Shade and I are, we still have rules that govern how we can use our powers.”
“Oh.” Balto said.
“The rules wouldn’t let et Shade send Jenna’s soul to hell,
