of the hill crest above him. He stared. She was wolf clan, he could tell. He didn’t know what she was trying to tell him, and he wasn’t even listening. His eyes were transfixed. He turned, and heard the whoosh, and saw the light just in time. A train came straight at him, and it was nearly in his face. He ducked, and clung on to the track for dear life. He sat back up, and watched as the train roared like a lion in the distance. He gasped for breath. The female had gone. He ran up the hill, and through the forest. He didn’t look where he was going, and as he ran looking behind himself, he crashed into something furry. It was the female wolf.

“Thanks for saving my life” Sasha stammered. “I’m Sasha”

“I’m Claw. Are you hurt?” She asked.

“Oh no, I just came to say thanks” he reassured her.

He began to walk with her. She led him through the forest, to her den, where her pack lived. The first thing Sasha saw shocked him. The black and white wolf trotted over to her.

“Claw, what are you doing with this half breed?” He asked.

“How do you know I’m half breed?” Sasha asked the wolf.

“This is Ronno” Claw told Sasha.

Ronno grunted.

“Come on Claw” He said. “Let’s go”

Sasha stood alone in the clearing. The sun beat down on him, and his heart pounded even louder, like a beating drum. He took off. So, Claw was with Ronno, huh? Sasha knew he recognized the malicious wolf from somewhere before, and he wanted to find out.

The next night, Sasha was walking along the river bank in the dusk sunlight, when he heard voices in the bushes. He crept up behind a bush.

“Come on, lets go to the other den by the river” a male voice said.

“What about Claw?” A female voiced asked back.

“This can be our little secret” The male whispered.

Sasha lifted his head over the bushes, and stared in shock, his heart thumping in his chest.

Ronno was stood with a small wolf. She was female. Sasha stifled a gasp. Without a second glance, he flew over the hilltops to where Claw’s den was. He had to tell her that Ronno was having an affair, and quickly. He skidded around a corner, and bumped into a huge black and white wolf.

“Half breed. Where are you going?” Ronno asked him

“That’s none of your business.” Sasha answered him. “How do you know I’m half and half?”

“That’s none of your business” Ronno growled. “Now, perhaps you were going to tell Claw about the female wolf I was meeting, because if you were, I’ll break you doggy legs one by one”

Sasha growled, Ronno growled. Sasha leapt at Ronno in fury.

“You were thinking of hurting even more than you already do!” He yelled.

Ronno leapt at Sasha, but instead of biting his neck, he grabbed his back leg in his mouth, and swung him around. Sasha flew into a rock, and hit his head. Sasha fell into a deep sleep…..

Sasha ran across the fields. His parents were fighting, against a large black and white wolf. It got bigger and bigger. Sasha cried…. He heard a female voice calling his name. Was it his mother?

Chapter 2

Sasha awoke with a jolt. Claw was stood above him, whispering his name.

“Claw?” He stammered.

“Are you alright?” Claw asked him. “You head looks sore”

Sasha remembered. Ronno had swung him around by his leg….that felt familiar. He suddenly remembered why he had been looking for Claw.

“Ronno was with another female wolf in the forest” He blurted.

“Dixie. He’s always liked Dixie” Claw cried.

Sasha watched as Claw cried for a moment. She wiped the tears with her paw.

“Do you want to walk with me?” Claw asked. “I’m going to the river”

“Yeah, if it cheers you up.” Sasha smiled.

The pair began walking steadily along the river bank, side by side.

“I want to go somewhere” Sasha told Claw.

“Where’s that?” Claw asked him.

“You’ll see….”

A bush rustled, and Ronno stepped out.

“ah, beauty and the beast. Claw, I know where the caribou is, do you want to go and find them?” Ronno asked, shoving Sasha aside.

Claw giggled. She pressed against him.

“Your offer is tempting” She said, making Ronno walked backwards. “Although, I don’t like my food wet”

Ronno slipped into the lake. He roared, and leapt after them, but they had already fled over the hill.

“Don’t come running to me when he goes back to the humans!” Ronno yelled after them, but they had already gone.

When they arrived back at Sasha’s den, they were exhausted.

“Are you coming?” Sasha asked Claw.

They walked up the cliffs, and across a log bridge. Sasha sniffed the air. It was so familiar, yet it felt colder and it was misty. They came out of the small forest. Sasha stood and stared. In front of him was his old den. It was still stood, looking well, but no one had lived I it since his parents were killed.

“What’s this?” Claw asked.

“Where my parents were killed” Sasha told her.

“Sasha, I’m sorry. I didn’t know.” She gasped.

“Well, not many people know why or care at all” Sasha told her solemnly.

He went inside it. It smelt musty and it was cold, but Sasha felt familiar with it. Suddenly, it got very misty inside, and he could hear crying. He crept along the dark corridors. A little fox was sat in one corner.

Claw ran up to him.

“Are you okay?” she asked him.

The little fox kept crying.

“Who are you?” Sasha asked, sensing something was wrong.

“I’m Whowtfiel” The fox answered, in a small voice. He looked at Sasha. His eyes were yellow. Sasha stifled a gasp. He had never seen eyes like that, except his mother’s.

“Can we call you Fox?” Claw asked.

Fox nodded.

“Come with us” Sasha added. They arrived back at the den, and it was getting dark. They all sat at the entrance to the den, and watched the sunset.

“That den was a good home for my family. But my mother told us not to go back” Sasha told them.

“What do you mean ‘us’? I thought it was only you” Claw said.

“I had a brother and a sister. May was killed. Rover fell off the log bridge. Our mother disappeared. No one has ever seen her.”

Fox smiled.

“What happened to Rover?” Claw asked.

“He fell off the cliff”

“So, your whole family died?”

Sasha nodded.

“There have been rumours that one survived.” Claw said.

“Yeah, my mother, I know”

“No, your brother. People say he survived, and I believe it. There’s proof. Some wolves think that he haunts the plains of the Artic, because they’ve heard him howling. I’ve heard him howling.”

“What difference does it make? He’s probably dead, like my father”

“Ronno talks about it a lot”

“He would, he hates me”

“He hates you for a reason. Haven’t you ever wondered why he calls you half breed? How he knows? There’s something very sinister that you don’t know about him, Sasha”

Sasha grunted.

“He was there with his father the night your family died. He murdered them, Sasha”

Chapter 3

Sasha couldn’t believe his ears, and he had very good hearing. Good though it was, he was bowled over. He was astonished, wordless, shocked. He sat in complete silence.

“Why didn’t you tell me” He said at last.

“I knew it would upset you. I finally twigged it when he called you half breed”

“I’ve got no family, no pack, and no life because of him”

“He killed your pack?”

“A big black and white wolf attacked us when we were hunting. I hid. I was a coward.”

“Ronno kills anybody who stands in his way”

“He’ll kill you” Sasha told her. “If you stay with me, you’re always in danger”

“I’m staying here. You go to the lake to cool down. I’ll sort out something to eat.”

Sasha did go to the river, but not to cool down. He lay in thought. Ronno killed his parents. How could he? He’d already messed his life up enough!

You have to stay strong He thought you can’t let him get away with it. He’s a malicious, evil…. Sasha stopped. He knew what he had to do. He had to fight, be he also had to prepare. He looked into the lake. He suddenly saw mist behind him. He turned, and saw a white dog stood behind him.

“Mother” Sasha said.

She stared at him with he yellow eyes. “What are you doing here?”

His heart thumped. He stared, wide eyed, at his mother. She howled, and vanished. Sasha sat looking at the sunset, and decided he should get back.

“Hello, Sash” a voice said behind him.

He turned to see a black and grey wolf looking at him.

“Rover?” He gasped. “Are you a ghost too?”

“No! Of course not. Why would I be a ghost? I’m not dead.”

“The cliff…..how did you survive?”

“Fell off the log, into the river, swum to the side, and a big black and white wolf was waiting for me”

“Ronno” Sasha growled. “Go on”

“He tried to kill me, but I left him with nice little souvenir.”

Sasha laughed. That explained Ronno’s huge scar on his leg.

“Anyways, he thought I was dead and threw me in the river. I floated downstream, and I’ve been living in Central America ever since. I actually faked being dead to get away”

“So, you have thought
