terrain.”

“Oh my god, they’re all ok!” said Duchess.

“They honestly think that they can make it home?” Togo asked.

“They can do it, I know Rylie, he’ll push them through.” said Buller. But little did he know, it was Balto pushing them through, Rylie had just one or two doubts about the whole thing.

“I bet they get here soon.” said Trigger.

“Domesticated animals won’t stand a chance. Who knows what type of predators live out there.” said Togo.

“It’s a lot of dogs sticking together out there though.” said Doc.

“Yeah, ever heard of safety in numbers?” Amber asked bitterly to Togo.

“Yeah, and I’ve also heard of bears, moose, wolves, and thin ice.” Togo snapped.

“There’s no thin ice out there, it’s summer!” said Mona, who was a female basset hound.

“They’re on a mountain, that’s really high up, it always snows up there.” said Togo.

“No, Balto’s too smart to take the rest of the dogs up that high.” said Trigger.

“Yeah, they’re probably only sticking to the low elevations of the range.” Buller added.

“Sometimes they may not have a choice.” said Buddy, a male Blood Hound.

“So anyway, how are the pups doing?” Amber asked.

“I wouldn’t call them pups anymore, they’re a year old.” said Duchess. “And they’re holding out pretty well.” she added.

“They’re still pups, they call Decoy a pup, and he’s two.” said Ranger, a Chocolate Lab.

“Well I don’t care about any of that stuff you guys are talking about. I just hope they get home alright.” said Doc.

“I hope so too.” said Amber. “I miss Balto.” she whispered to herself.

“Don’t worry, they’ll mate it.” said Jewel, a Dalmatian.

The owners of the dogs had ended their trip, and later found out that their dogs were missing. They were in their houses, waiting for any information from the telegrapher about there pets.

Rosie sat on the couch and cried, with the puppies sitting next to her on the couch, in front of her on the floor, and with one on her lap.

Her parents watched from the kitchen.

“Maybe this wouldn’t be the best time to tell her that we have to sell the puppies soon.” Rosie’s mom whispered.

Her parents were planning on telling Rosie that the pups would have to be sold after the vacation, but since she was so upset, and she had lost her first dog, they were in no mood to tell her, and it certainly wasn’t the right time. But it had to be done soon. The house wasn’t nearly big enough for 8 full grown dogs.

Day 4

Back on the mountain, the dogs were walking through the forest, next to the river. As they headed further, they stopped. The river had turned and was now right in the middle of their path. It was deep, and a long way to the other side, luckily, it seemed like a gentle current, and should be easy to cross.

“Well I guess we have to cross here.” said Balto as he stepped into the water.

“Is it safe?” Sage asked.

“The current seems pretty gentle. We should be fine.” said Ashlie.

Just then, the dogs heard a growling sound from behind them. They immediately turned around, and there it was. The bear had finally caught up with them. It roared at the dogs, bearing its long fangs.

“RUN!” Decoy yelled.

“How did it find us?” Steele yelled as he stood with his two front paws in the water, as the dogs passed him by, jumping into the water.

The bear ran and confronted the dogs and roared. The pack turned and ran back to land.

The bear followed and raised his huge paw. He slammed it into Banshee and pushed him against a tree. Banshee had badly bruised his back, and he slid down the tree, scraping his side. He lay there limp.

The bear started to walk towards Banshee, Sage noticed and ran towards the bear and jumped on his back. The bear shook her off and bit her back leg as punishment.

Rylie and Brendon barked viciously at the bear, the bear looked at then and began a chase. Rylie ran and cut his back leg on a sharp twig from a bush.

Decoy so bravely stepped up and bite the bears back paw and tugged on it as hard as he could.

Ashlie ran up to the bear, and clenched her jaws onto his neck, and bit down. The bear roared in pain as he tried to shake Ashlie off. He pushed her away with his massive paw, leaving scratches on her side.

Brendon jumped on the bears back and bit down as hard as he could. The bear reared up, causing Brendon to fall.

Scout and Steele ran in front of the bear and barked loudly at him. The bear shoved them out of the way with his large head and roared.

The bear swiped Decoy away and growled at him.

Jenna ran up and bit his muzzle and scratched his head.

Seeing Jenna on the bear gave Balto and idea. He jumped on the bears back and bit down as hard as he could. Scout went to help Banshee to stand up as the rest of the dogs ran on top of the bear and attacked him. The dogs had caught on to Balto’s plan. They all gang up on the bear at the same time, and outnumber him.

The bear roared in pain and started to run, but it was more like staggering. The bear fell over and crushed Decoy’s back left leg.

Decoy yelped in pain as he flailed around, trying to pull his leg out from under the vicious animal.

Balto jumped off the bear and ran to Decoy. He clamped his mouth on Decoy’s scruff and pulled him out. The two were flung back and fell, Decoy on top of Balto.

The bear managed to get the dogs off of him and then headed for Decoy and Balto. Steele ran in front of them and growled.

The bear roared and shoved Steele out of the way. Steele went flying and landed on the ground and bounced a few times and rolled. His back was badly bruised from landing on it, he simply couldn’t get up.

Decoy caught the bears eye as he went running for the river. The bear ran towards him, roaring. Scout grabbed the bears front paw in her mouth and bit down as hard as she could. The bear roared in pain and threw her off.

All the dogs ganged up on the bear and barked and growled savagely at him. The bear backed away, he couldn’t take the fighting any more.

Ashlie lunged at the bear and bit his arm, and growled.

The bear retracted his arm and roared.

He had enough. He finally turned and ran through the bushes and disappeared.

All but Jenna had been wounded in the fight, but they weren’t going to let that stop them.

“Is everyone ok?” Balto asked.

“Well...no, but we can keep going if we push ourselves hard enough.” Rylie replied.

“You, Ashlie?” Balto asked.

“I’m fine.” she replied with a nod.

“Alright.” Balto turned and walked into the river.

The other side was 30 yards away, it was long, but nothing they couldn’t handle. All the dogs loved to swim.

The rest of the pack followed and began swimming.

“I don’t think this current is gentle enough Balto, its hard to stay put.” Jenna said.

“Just stay calm and keep going, you’re doing fine.” Balto said. “Steele, go to the back of the pack, make sure no one gets left behind.” Balto ordered.

“Alright.” Steele replied. He slowed down and waited for the rest of the dogs to pass him.

“Decoy, you doing alright?” Rylie asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine, don’t worry about me.” Decoy responded.

Just then, the dogs heard a cracking sound coming from the right. They all looked and saw a huge pile of fallen trees blocking some of the water from coming through.

“That must be why the current is slow, the trees are blocking the water.” said Sage.

“They must’ve fallen from the storm we had a few weeks ago.” said Ashlie.

“Swim faster, it’s gonna break!” Steele yelled. He jumped as high as he could and landed back in the water and swam rapidly.

“Let’s go, hurry up!” Balto yelled as he sped through the water.

They heard a cracking sound again. The pressure from the water on the other side of the logs was causing the trees to break.

The dogs continued swimming for their lives, going as fast as they can.

They were half way there, when one of the trees broke in half, and a huge amount of water came pouring through with extreme force. Logs began to move forwards towards the dogs, giving room for more and more water to come through. The water reached the dogs and pushed them down the river until the current calmed down a little. The logs came rushing towards them, bumping into them, and passing them up. There were so many of them, they were almost completely covering the surface of the water.

“KEEP GOING!” Balto yelled.

Jenna, Rylie, and Steele were being crushed between logs, and couldn’t move.

“Balto!” Jenna called out.

Balto and Ashlie turned around, and saw Steele’s ears peeking over one of the logs. They quickly swam towards the three distressed canines.

Scout was nearby, and caught sight of Jenna. She began to swim towards them to help Balto get them
