and all the dogs stopped what they were doing and looked.

Balto was growling at Hunter, and his side and shoulders were pouring blood.

Hunter growled, and him and Balto circled each other, their fur bristling on their backs.

Balto suddenly began to bark, Hunter slammed Balto’s jaw with his paw, Balto’s head was thrown to the side. He looked back at Hunter and snarled, his mouth open, and then bit down on his muzzle.

All the dogs cringed as Hunter thrashed and whined.

Balto finally let go, and stared at the dog.

“Copper, let’s go!” Hunter said quickly. Copper ran to Hunter and stood next to him. Balto’s gang, along with Jenna, growled viciously at the strays, and bearing their sharp fangs with theirs head down low.

“Hey! What’s going on over here?” Rylie asked as he cantered up and stood next to Balto. Banshee, Buller, Scout, Decoy, and Trigger soon showed up and did the same.

“What do you think?” Jenna said.

Rylie lowered his head and growled at Hunter and Copper.

“If you ever come near Jenna again!” Balto growled.

“If you come near ANYONE again!” Rylie finished.

“Both of you!” Shep threatened.

“You guys are never gonna beat us, so get lost!” yelled Scout.

“Yeah, just give up, your never gonna win.” said Banshee.

“This ain’t over yet, wolfdog! Watch your back!” Hunter said angrily.

Balto lowered his head and growled fiercely and revealed as much of his fangs as physically possible.

“You’ll never be anything more than stupid worthless strays! Especially you Hunter!” Jenna snapped.

“Now beat it!” Balto barked.

Hunter and Copper quickly turned and ran off.

“Togo, who was very injured and weak, but was still able to stand up, turned his head towards Jenna and spoke. “Way to go Jenna, you finally decided to handle it yourself.”

“Well I had to do it eventually.” Jenna chuckled.

“That’s right, get outta here!” Decoy barked as he lunged forward, yelling at the two strays.

The dogs watched as the two strays ran off as fast as they could.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Hunter and Copper slowed to a walked and kept moving down the road.

“You never should’ve taken that bet, Hunter.” Copper said.

Hunter was walking, hanging his head low. “I thought we could win cuz we were only going up against Togo, he’s a pretty small dog, you know.”

“I guess.” Copper replied.

“Ugh.” Hunter said in pain as he swung his head to the side. “We’re just outnumbered a lot of the time.” he added.

“I hate being a stray, there’s barely any food, and the other dogs are always trying to dominate us by fighting.” Copper said.

“What are you talking about? Being a stray is great. It’s what makes a dog...a dog.” Hunter replied proudly with his head held high.

Copper thought for a moment. “Yeah I guess...those dumb house pets are so pathetic!” he said.

“Tomorrow, we’ll kill them for sure.” Hunter declared.

“You know Hunter, as much as you love Jenna, I don’t think we should do this anymore. I know you remember what happened last time. You killed that Rottweiler because you liked his girlfriend, I think she was that long-haired German Shepherd. But she only saw you as a friend..a slightly temperamental friend. She kept insulting you for being a killer. You didn’t like that at all. You attacked her and left her to die, and you never saw her again. God knows if she’s still alive.” Copper explained.

“Yeah! Yeah! I know what I did!” Hunter said angrily.

As Hunter kept walking, he began to think back on what happened with the Rottweiler, and his girlfriend. He remembered it all so well. It was back when Hunter used to be a prized fighting dog, and had an owner.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

It was way down in the country regions of Nebraska, with many farms, and horses, and other livestock. Hunter had found out that he would be moving to Nome, Alaska the next month, and there was still one thing that he wanted to do before he left, and that was to win Natasha’s heart. Natasha was a young female, a Long-Haired German Shepherd. Her coloring was so beautiful to Hunter, it was very similar to Scout’s. She was brown, and her legs and stomach were gold. The base of her ears were feathered with long fur. Her pelt was silky and warm, and she had a tail that was almost constantly wagging. She was a very proud and prideful dog, something that Hunter admired.

But there was one problem. Natasha had a boyfriend that she was completely devoted to. A Rottweiler named Dodger. He was very protective of Natasha, and was almost always seen with her. Dodger was a good sized dog, yet a little smaller than Hunter. Dodger’s short fur was all black, with brown legs, and a brown muzzle. He was sometimes a fighter, and his appearance showed he was good at it. His slightly arched neck was very strong and well muscled, his legs had plenty of thick bone, and he had very strong jaws.

After Hunter had left his house, he went looking for Natasha. It was a beautiful, warm summer day in the country. Birds were chirping, horses were galloping through their pastures, people were taking their dogs for walks outside, and it was definitely a day when the dogs in the neighborhood would gather to their favorite spot in the world. It seemed like it was going to be a good day for Hunter. He trotted past the pasture of horses that was on his owner’s property, and into the woods, trotting over and under twigs and branches.

He came to a huge clearing and stopped. The meadow was several acres, and there were trees all around. There was a lake, that was fed by a waterfall that slid down from many rocks, which led to the top of a small cliff. Hunter could see Dodger, Natasha, Copper, and many other dogs that lived in the neighborhood.

Dodger and Natasha were romping through the meadow, their floppy ears flowing in the breeze.

Hunter proceeded forward, and trotted to the middle of the field, up to a certain Eskimo dog that he knew very well. He was none other than his best friend, Copper.

Yes, Copper was a big part of Hunter’s past, because their owner was one and the same. Hunter was used as a fighting dog, and keeping wild animals away from his owner’s livestock. And Copper was used as simply a companion, and sometimes as a herding dog if one was needed. But it was always such a rare occasion.

“Where have you been Hunter?” Copper asked.

“Just at home, lying around.” the malamute replied.

Copper noticed Hunter eyeing Dodger and Natasha, who were now lying down in part of a circle of gossiping dogs.

Copper knew exactly what his friend was thinking. “Hunter, please. Just leave her alone. She’s never gonna have any interest in you.” Copper said for the millionth time.

“Copper...if you say that one more time, I swear to god I’ll tear you apart!” Hunter snapped. “Now just back off!” He added furiously.

Copper flinched and backed away. He hesitated, then sighed and sat down. Pretty much all his life he had done what ever Hunter had told him to do. It was as if he had promised to remain loyal to the very end.

Hunter started at a trot, then began to canter over to the group of canines, acting as if he wanted to join in on the latest gossip.

Dodger and Natasha saw him approaching and looked up at him.

“Hey, Natasha.” Hunter said.

Natasha stood up and faced towards Hunter. “Oh, hey Hunter.” she said.

Natasha and Hunter were sort of like friends. They got along alright, but never talked too much. Natasha’s friends always told her that Hunter was nothing but trouble, but the only reason why she remained friends with him because he was always kind to her. Hunter never really cared much for the other dogs, he was usually somewhat hateful to them. Only once in a blue moon would Hunter decide not to pick a fight whenever he had the chance.

Dodger stepped in front of Natasha and growled.

“What’s your problem?” Hunter asked.

“I told you to stay away from her! Now get lost!” Dodger snapped.

Hunter let out a growl. “You know, I can’t STAND paranoid dogs like you.” he said piercingly.

Natasha wanted to step up and end the fight before it got worse, but she knew that Dodger wouldn’t be too crazy about the idea. Dodger was the kind of dog that had dominance, and never stepped down when he was being challenged. Unfortunately for him, Hunter was the same kind of dog, except with more brute strength.

“I told you to stay away from her.” Dodger snarled. He began to circle Hunter. “Now get outta here you pathetic little mut!” he ordered.

Hunter never liked it when other dogs made fun of him. Or when they denied the fact that he was pure Malamute. Hunter had a nasty attitude about mix breeds, he always believed that they were beneath the purebreds.

Hunter lowered his head and growled fiercely, keeping his big brown eyes fixed on the German Pointer.

Copper, who was watching from a distance, stood up and suddenly looked worried. He knew that things weren’t going well. He let out a bark, warning the other dogs in the field.
