wall.

“Josh?” Saba asked, walking toward the huddled figure. Even though she couldn’t see his face, she could still recognize her friend. “I’m sorry about what happened before, Josh. And I have something to tell you.” She lay down next to him. “I’m part wolf,” she whispered into his ear. “Now I’m going to try harder than ever to learn how to hunt from you.”

“Great, you have motivation,” Josh muttered. “Can I please be alone? I really don’t want to talk to anyone right now.”

“Josh, there’s something else I want to tell you,” Saba said. She sat up. “Josh, look at me.”

Josh reluctantly sat up and looked straight into Saba’s eyes. “What is it?” he asked.

“You know how I said that I just wanted to be friends before?” Saba asked. Josh looked away. Saba put her arm on his shoulder. “Josh, I’ve been thinking a lot about this. And…I changed my mind.”

Josh looked at Saba again. It was the first time she had seen him smile for a while. “Do you mean…?” Josh couldn’t finish his sentence.

Saba’s eyes filled with tears. “Yes, Josh,” she said. “I want to be more than friends. I love you, Josh.”

Tears began to roll down Josh’s cheek also. “I love you too, Saba.”

Dingo crawled into the hideout first. It was pitch black, making it impossible to see anything.

“I guess no one’s here,” Matteo, who had came in after him, said. “Why do you want to find Liko, anyway? Do you want her to come with us?”

Dingo nodded. “Exactly,” he said. “I was hoping that she would be here. Maybe we should just leave.”

Suddenly a fire was lighted in one corner of the room. “Hold it,” someone growled. “You’re not going anywhere.” A dark figure walked out of the shadows and into the light. It was a huge, black husky.

Dingo’s eyes widened. “Who is that?” he whispered to Matteo.

Matteo looked like he had just seen a ghost. “That’s Seno!” he whispered.

Chapter 13

Dingo forced a smile. “Hi, Seno,” he said. “Isn’t it nice out tonight?” He laughed nervously.

Seno narrowed his eyes. “I see you’re looking for that little friend of yours, Liko,” he said. “Don’t bother. But as long as you’re here, why don’t you stay for a while?” A group of menacing dogs that were grinning evilly began to come out of the shadows.

Matteo started shaking in fear as some of the dogs began to close in on him. Dingo looked calm. “Ooh, I’m so afraid,” he said. Suddenly he closed his eyes and fell to the ground.

Matteo bit his lip and started walking backwards. “Dingo, this is a really bad time to faint!” he said. Then he tried to slowly grab Dingo with his teeth and drag him out of the room. But one of the snarling dogs got in his way and snapped at his jaw. Matteo jumped backwards with a yipe.

“You and your friend aren’t going anywhere,” Seno said. “I’ve got a bone to pick with you two.”

“Why us?” Matteo asked. “We never did anything to you!”

“You’re associates of that dog Liko and her group,” Seno growled. “They’re the only dogs in Anchorage that dare to defy me.”

“Look,” Matteo said. “I was kicked out of that group a long time ago, and my friend here is new to town. Can’t you just let us go?”

Seno paused for a moment, as if he was considering it. Then he shook his head. “Get them,” he ordered the other dogs.

Tons of dogs came lunging at Matteo at once. He tried to drive them back, but he couldn’t. Finally he dived into the mass of dogs, trying to find his friend. “Dingo!” he cried out.

One of the dogs clamped his jaw onto one of Matteo’s paws and didn’t let go. He shook the dog off, rubbing the sore paw and wincing. Blood was starting to come out of the wound. He slashed at another dog that was trying to attack him, and then saw Dingo’s head.

Matteo grabbed Dingo’s neck with his teeth and dragged him through the mass of dogs. Finally he escaped from the huge group and headed for the entrance. But one dog still blocked his way: Seno.

“Are you deaf?” Seno snarled. “I told you I wouldn’t let you out of here alive. And I intend to keep that promise.”

Matteo closed his eyes and braced himself, expecting a blow from the huge dog. Instead, he heard a painful yelp. He opened his eyes and saw Liko and a few others on top of Seno, pinning him to the ground.

“Go!” Liko yelled. “Get out of here!”

Matteo nodded and charged out of the exit, still carrying Dingo in his teeth.

-----

Dingo woke up an hour later and looked around. “What happened?” he asked. “Where am I?”

Matteo, who was sitting down next to his friend, heaved a sigh of relief. “We’re on the outskirts of Anchorage right now,” he said. “You fainted while we were back at the hideout.

“I fainted?” Dingo asked. “That’s scary…I fainted the day before I left Nome…what’s wrong with me?”

Matteo coughed violently and Dingo smiled. “I guess I’m not the only one with health problems,” he said jokingly.

“Don’t worry about me,” Matteo said. “I’ll be fine.”

“Anyway, what happened at the hideout?” Dingo asked.

“Well, Seno ordered this huge bunch of dogs to attack us. I tried to find you in the huge mass, and finally I did. I had almost pulled you out of the hideout when Seno came and blocked the entrance. I braced myself because I thought he would hurt me. Then all of a sudden Liko and some other dogs came out of nowhere and pinned him to the ground.”

“Where did they come from?” Dingo asked.

“While we were inside the hideout, that little girl-Sandy, I think that’s what her name is-found Liko and the others in the alley. Somehow she told them that you and I were in danger, and they got to the hideout as soon as possible.”

“Did they make it out of there alright?”

“Yes. Some of them have a few scratches, but nothing serious. And they’re all coming to Nome with us now.”

Suddenly Liko walked up next to Dingo. “Hey,” she said. “Are you all right?” Then she caught sight of Matteo on the other side of Dingo and looked away. “Um, if you two are talking, I’ll go. I don’t want to interrupt anything…”

Dingo sat up. “Wait, Liko,” he said. “I want you to stay.”

Matteo glared at him. “Dingo, are you nuts?” he mouthed. “She hates me!”

Dingo sighed. “Look,” he said. “You two used to be best friends. Now you don’t even speak to each other. I bet that both of you would be a lot happier if you were friends again.”

Liko bit her lip. “You’re right, Dingo,” she said. She turned to Matteo. “Matt, I’m sorry. I don’t know why I didn’t want to talk to you. It just felt so weird when I found out that my best friend had a crush on me. For some reason I felt mad at you. Now that all just seems stupid.”

Matteo looked Liko in the eye with a hopeful look on his face. “So…does that mean we’re friends again?” he asked.

Liko nodded and smiled. Then the two dogs embraced each other.

Dingo shook his head in amazement. ‘Wow,’ he thought. ‘These two haven’t been talking to each other for months. Then I just told them to make up, and they did. I guess I make a big impression on people…’

Dingo didn’t know how right he was.

Chapter 14

It had been a week since Dingo had started out on the journey, and he was becoming worried. Matteo’s condition was getting worse, and he had a lot of intense coughing fits. Also, another dog from Anchorage, named Devon, was starting to catch the same thing. Dingo was afraid that neither of them would make it to Nome.

One night, while they were resting, Dingo decided to pay a visit to Devon. He walked up to where the dog was lying. “Do you mind if I sit next to you?” Dingo whispered.

The dog shook his head. “Go ahead,” he said. Then he started coughing.

Dingo’s heart started to beat faster when he saw some red liquid come out of Devon’s mouth as he coughed. ‘He’s coughing up blood,’ Dingo thought.

Devon turned and looked at Dingo. He looked pale. “Am I going to make it, Dingo?” he asked. “Am I going to stay alive?”

Dingo bit his lip. He
