Balto was sleeping in his cabin on his old fishing boat which he used to call home. Now he only goes there for privacy, a place to get away from everything. He was suddenly awoken by a red and cream dog that jumped on him. Balto flinched and stood up and looked around. The dog hopped off his back and looked at him. It was Dakota, who was now over a year old. The puppies were fully grown now, and there wasn’t enough room in Rosie’s house to keep them all at once anymore, so they have been sold to new, very good and responsible owners.

“What is it?” Balto asked with a tired voice.

“C’mon dad, you gotta wake up.” the dog said.

Balto and Dakota walked out onto the deck of the boat.

“What were you doing here anyway? You live with mom.” Dakota said, sounding confused.

“I come here once in a while to relax and have some privacy.” Balto replied.

“Well, anyway, you have to get ready for the race against Togo’s team.” Dakota said.

Balto gasped. “Oh no! I completely forgot!” he yelled.

Anela walked onto the boat. “It’s ok dad, the race still isn’t for a couple hours, so you have plenty of time to wake up and gain your energy, but you better head to the team house for breakfast.” she said.

“What? Are you guys in charge of me now or something?” Balto joked.

The pups laughed as Diego came bucking onto the deck with Boris’ wings wrapped around his neck, screaming. Boris went flying into the cabin on the deck, and landed with a thud.

“Balto! You have to start controlling these dogs! They’re everyvhere! The boat isn’t big enough for them! This vas my home first! And now it’s over run with polar bears and volf dog pups!” he complained with a very loud angry voice.

Balto ran into the cabin. “Aww, come on Boris, they’re older now, they’re more mature.” Balto said.

“Not Diego!” Boris screamed.

He and Balto looked out the window to see Dakota ridding around on Luk.

“And Dakota is the most show-offy dog I have ever known!” Boris yelled. “Next to Steele of course.”

Boris Chuckled.

“That may be true.” Balto laughed. “But he’s still my son. I have to go.” Balto walked to his ramp and looked back at the pups. “C’mon you guys!” he yelled.

All the pups looked at him, then ran. Balto led the pups to the team house. They went inside and Balto ate breakfast with his team.

“Balto, where were you?” Kaltag asked.

“I slept in, I was up late last night. I forgot that the race was today.” Balto explained.

“How can you forget?” This is an important race, all of them are. It determines whether you get to stay the champion or not, and to keep the collar!” Kaltag said quickly.

“I know I know, I’m sorry.” Balto said.

At the starting point...

“Alright everybody, time to get harnessed up!” Gunnar yelled.

All the dogs smiled and barked as they ran to where their sled was waiting for them.

“Good luck Balto.” said Shep as he walked by. He was the 6th dog on his team.

“Yeah, and win or lose, it’s always a pleasure running behind yous.” Nikki said as he followed.

“Balto!” yelled Blaze, the 7th dog on the team. He ran up to Balto and stood in front of him. “Do you know who we’re going against?” he asked.

“Uh...yeah, we’re going against Togo’s team.” Balto replied.

Dingo, the 5th dog on the team walked up. “Be careful, he’s a very experienced sled dog.” he said. Dingo and Blaze walked to their spots on the team.

A few minutes later, all the dogs except Balto were harnessed. Togo was already harnessed up and came running up about 15 yards away from Balto with his team. “That collar’s gonna be mine, Balto!” Togo joked.

“In your dreams Togo!” replied Balto with a laugh.

Back in Nome, everyone was excited about the race, even the dogs. The race was finally almost over. Jenna and the pups were on Balto’s boat, talking. The puppies talked to each other and Jenna as they all played.

“I can’t wait until dad wins!” Dakota said as he wagged his tail.

“Why?” Anela asked.

“Because after the race, their holding tryouts for the future mail dog team. I wanna be one of the lead dogs!” Dakota replied. He had recently revealed to his brothers and sisters that he wanted to be a sled dog, and they didn’t think he was stupid at all, they thought it would be pretty cool to have a brother on a sled team.

“You know, it takes a lot of practice and training to become a lead dog.” Jenna warned.

“Dad didn’t go through practice and training.” Dakota said as he sat down.

“Actually he did, he had to learn all the commands and everything before he could be officially put on the team.” Jenna explained.

“Well, no matter what it takes...” Dakota started. He did a back flip and landed gracefully on the wood floor of the deck. “I’m gonna be a lead dog!” he declared as he stood on his hind legs.

“Your such a show off, Dakota!” Nellie yelled.

“Doing tricks like that aren’t going to get you to become the lead dog.” Diego said as he walked up and sat down.

“I know.” Dakota began. He climbed up a staircase of barrels and jumped on the roof of the cabin. “But I gotta be in shape.” he said as he stepped onto the thin top of a long flat wooden board. The board fell forward and Dakota jumped off and onto the rim of the boat before the board landed. “I gotta be fast, swift.” he jumped down onto the deck. “Like dad.” he finished. He sat down, feeling so proud of himself.

“Wow, that was awesome.” Anela said.

“That was so cool!” yelled Kiara.

“Yeah!” Nanook yelled.

“Betcha can’t do that.” Dakota said as he licked his paw and rubbed the top of his head.

“I’ll take that bet!” Anela said.

Dakota moved the board back up to where it was.

Anela sprinted up the barrels, hopped on the roof, stepped onto the board, jumped onto the rim, and jumped back onto the deck.

All the puppies barked and cheered as Dakota gawked. But then he smiled and spoke. “You’ve been practicing haven’t you?” Dakota said.

“Yeah, but just to prove to you that your not the only pup that could do that, anyone could.” Anela replied.

“Yeah, but it’s hard.” said Dakota.

“Being a sled dog would be cool.” Anela started. She hopped onto the rim and sat as she looked out to the open land and water. “But I like adventure, to be free.” she said.

“But still, how can doing tricks get you to be a lead dog?” Diego asked.

“I already told you, it doesn’t. But it works up my muscles, and tests my strength and balance.” Dakota ran in a circle. “And my agility. Besides, dad does lots of tricks. He climbs around on houses and roofs, on shaky fences, he can jump from one pole to another, AND he can cross from one house to another by hanging from a clothing line!” Dakota said.

Jenna stood up. “Alright guys, lets go, the 1 mile marker has already been shot,
