As they got closer they discovered the source of the singing voices, it turned out to be four marble statue busts on tall pedestals engaged in a barbershop quartet rendition of a familiar song that went something like this...

BASS BUST: As the moon climbs high over dead oak trees...

TENOR BUST: Spooks arrive for the midnight spree...

BARITONE BUST: Creepy creeps with errie eyes...

SOPRANO BUST: Start to shriek...

ALL FOUR BUSTS: And harmonize, grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!!!

BASS BUST: When the cryptdoors creak and the tombstones quake...

ALL FOUR BUSTS: Spooks come out for a swinging wake. Happy haunts materalize and begin to vocalize, grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!!!

BASS BUST: Now don't close your eyes and don't try to hide...

ALL FOUR BUSTS: Or a silly spook will sit by your side. Shrouded in a daft disquise they pretend to terrorize, grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!!!

BASS BUST: When you hear the knell of a funeral bell...

ALL FOUR BUSTS: Wierd glows gleam where spirits dwell. Restless bones etheralize rise as spooks of every size, grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!!! Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiizzzzzzze...

Immediately the busts stopped singing and again fell silent or returned to normal state as usual. Balto, Jenna, Aleu, Kodi, Boris and Steele just stared with eyes wide and mouths open in stunned amazement at what they just witnessed. Singing statues, they asked themselves? No way...it cannot be real, but it did happen! Not wanting to hang around and see if they would come alive and start singing again the wolves, goose and huskies hurried away, but even as they did so they heard the busts materalize back into ghostly life once more to start singing another song that went like this...

ALL FOUR BUSTS: Sooooo, we'll sing you a little sooooooong and it won't be very looooooong, about so long. Soooo loooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnng!!!

Alarmed the gang ran even faster down the pathway to get away from these haunting scenarios to escape this madness. Suddenly they pulled up short as a dark shape loomed directly in their path. "What's that thing?" asked Kodi, "Dunno what it is, son" Balto said. "That's a mausoleum or crypt-vault" explained Boris "It's where people after they passed away are placed inside these vaults or mausoleums instead of buried underground beneath tombstones" Steele, even Jenna stared at him agast, what did he say it was?!! "Wait a minute, it's located by the fence!" shouted Aleu in excitement, "So it's the way out of here" "It is?!!" Jenna asked in suprise and shock. "Yes, mother. All we have to do is traverse through this mausoleum and hopefully it will lead us out the back-gate by the fence" the shewolf concluded. "So, what are we waiting for? Come on! Stay close and don't look back" Balto warned his family as the hero ran toward the entrance of the vault. As he did the ancient stone door creaked open on its rusty hinges. In seconds he was through the door and into the interior. "Dad, wait for me!" cried Kodi who ran after his father into the vault, followed seconds later by uncle Steele. "Let's go, ladies" Boris suggested, gesturing for them to go ahead of him to which both husky and wolf agreed and ran through the open door, the goose on their tails.

Wolves, goose and huskies descended a flight of stone steps until arriving on a cobblestone-like floor with high rough walls carved out of stone and earth, a vaulted ceiling above their heads. Coffins or caskets were neatly arranged along the walls side by side or stacked atop one another, some could be seen inside openings cut into the walls like shelves. Also hidden in these niches were urn jars containing the ashes of the deceased ones of long ago. Balto, his son and daughter, his wife, best friend and blood-brother continued on their way through the vault in search of another way out when another ghost voice echoed from out of nowhere, startling them. "Hurry back...hurry back..." it said. "Who spoke?" Steele wondered out loud, "Someone there?" "I don't see..." began Kodi but was cut off by his sister saying, "Does that answer your question, bro?" as Aleu pointed ahead towards a archway carved out of brickwork and standing atop this platform stood another ghost, a woman wearing a bridal gown-like dress and holding a boquet of flowers in both hands. "Say, that looks like the same ghost we encountered in the attic before" exclaimed Jenna. "But she looks much younger than the one we saw" said Boris. "Good grief!" cried Balto in shock, "Not another supernatural spirit, not again" whined the hero of Alaska in despair. Meanwhile the ghost woman continued talking, oblivious to the presence of the canines beneath her. "Be sure to bring your death certificate if you decide to join us...make final arrangements now, we've been dying, ahem...to have you, hmhmmhmmm...Hurry back...hurry back..." Then as quickly as she appeared, she dissapeared again into nothingness. Without pausing the friends ran like crazy, crossing a stone bridge over a moat-like river to the opposite side of the chamber and up another flight of stone stairs towards the top where a second stone door swung open to allow them to escape. By the time they made it outside, the family realized they were standing in front of the back-gate by the iron fence surrounding the property.

"Did you enjoy your visit?..." came the all-too familiar voice of the Ghost Host from within the vault's interior through the open door behind them. It was as if their unseen host had followed them all the way to the other side so to speak. "I told you you would not be harmed...thank you for spending some time with us...Come again, bring your friends if they believe this story you tell...I have to go now, it is midnight...Pleasant dreams...hmhmm, hmhmmhmmm...hmhmmhmmmahahahahahahaah..." then the laughter faded away to nothingness. Howling in terror and horror; Balto, Kodi, Jenna, Aleu, Boris and Steele ran and ran. And they did not stop running until the mansion was far away and out of sight and still they ran on until finally reaching the safety of home.

It reminds me of the Houdini ride at Six Flags New England. I can't
say I care much for ghost stories, but someone who did would like
this. I ought to recommend that it be rated PG, though, for
frightening imagery (the hanging skeleton was a bit much, you know?

For maximum fright factor, I recommend reading this story on a stormy
night. Not bad, overall. *favs*
