signal by winking at him.

Steele growled then barked at Bandit. Everyone gawked at the sound Steele made. It was like a vicious rabid dog. It was hard to believe that a dog could make a noise like that. Steele chased Bandit in a small circle, then Bandit ran towards the door. Bandit ran out, and Balto went after him as Steele followed.

Bandit ran as fast as he could, which was defiantly no match for the intense speed of Balto. Balto jumped on Bandit’s back and bit his neck. Bandit collapsed and flipped on his side. Steele caught up and started pulling on Bandit’s collar and biting his face. Balto chewed at his chest and neck. Bandit whined so loud, it reached the ear of the butcher. The butcher went out the door with a flashlight. Steele let go of Bandit’s collar when he noticed the light coming towards them.

«Balto! Let’s go!» Steele yelled. He ran back to the boiler room.

Balto didn’t hear Steele, the sound of his voice was drowned out by Balto’s loud growling. Unfortunately, he didn’t notice the light. When Balto finally did see it, he immediately jumped off of Bandit, but as he started to run, the light shined on him.

«BALTO!» the butcher yelled.

Steele ran into the boiler room.

«Where’s Balto?» Jenna asked.

Steele looked outside and saw the butcher grabbing Balto’s collar. He picked up Bandit and started walking towards the vet building.

«No! I thought he was right behind me!» Steele yelled.

Balto struggled as the butcher dragged him to the vet.

«Let’s go!» Togo said.

All the dogs ran as fast as they could towards Balto, but before they could reach him, the butcher had brought him into the vet’s office. The dogs pounded on the door as they barked. They ran to the window of the room that Balto and Bandit were in. Jenna put her ear up to it and listened.

«Balto attacked Bandit, I found them in the middle of the road.» the butcher said loudly.

«Balto? How could he?» the vet asked.

«It must be because he’s half wolf. He has savage instincts. He’s clearly unpredictable and dangerous.» said the butcher.

The vet sighed. «Well, since he did this, we’re gonna have to kill ‘im. Town hero or not. He’s too dangerous to keep around.» said the doctor as he put Balto in a cage. Balto lowered his ears and frowned.

Jenna widened her eyes and gasped.

«What?» Steele asked.

«There’s gonna kill Balto!» Jenna yelled.

Steele trotted away from the window and turned toward it. He ran as fast as he could and burst through the window. The other dogs followed as they barked.

The two men looked around and tried to round up the dogs. The dogs managed to open the cage to let Balto out. Balto ran out the window and the other dogs followed.

They all talked as they ran.

«Balto, you have to leave the town, its your only hope of staying alive.» Steele said.

«No! Balto! You can’t leave!» Jenna yelled.

«Jenna, it’s his only hope! If he stays they eventually catch him!» yelled Togo.

«Togo! What’s wrong with you! Balto’s staying here. This is his home!» Blaze snapped.

«He can’t leave! What’s he supposed to do out there?» Duchess asked.

«Live with a pack of wolves or something.» Steele said. He panted a few times.

«No! We can’t just toss Balto out of town!» Kaltag yelled.

«Yeah, he’s da hero, and our leader, he belongs here.» Nikki said.

The dogs reached the outskirts of Nome and stopped.

Jenna nuzzled Balto. «Balto, don’t do this, you’ll never be able to see your pups again!» Jenna said.

«He’ll be kicked off the team, and rejected by all humans in the town.» Steele said. « What’s the point in staying?» he asked.

«That kind of thing already happened to him! I’m sure he can adjust!» Jenna yelled.

«But before he wasn’t at the risk of being killed!» Steele yelled back.

Just then a tan and cream colored Siberian Husky with floppy ears and 3 tan spots on her muzzle ran up to the dogs. It was Sage, Steele’s mate. «I saw what happened, what’s going on?» she asked.

«Balto’s leaving town.» Steele said.

«No!» Jenna yelled.

«If he stays here he’ll die!» Togo said.

Jenna looked at Togo. «I thought he was your best friend!» Jenna yelled.

«He is, and I’d hate to see him die for something that was for a good cause.» Said Togo. «Leaving is his only hope.» he added.

Kaltag sighed. «He’s right.»

«Have you all lost your minds?» Blaze asked. «This is ridiculous.» he added.

Jenna shed a tear and nuzzled Balto. Balto nuzzled back. He licked her muzzle and eye.

«C’mon Balto, lets go home.» Blaze said as he started to turn around.

«Balto! Go!» Steele said. He pushed Balto.

Balto let out a whine and a bark as he looked at the dogs. He looked ahead and ran as fast as he could.

«BALTO!» Jenna began to chase him. Steele and Togo held her back by her bandana, and Kaltag stood in front of her. She struggled to free herself, but she just couldn’t. She cried as she watched Balto get further and further away.

«I’m sorry Jenna.» Steele whispered as he nuzzled her.

Blaze growled at Steele and brushed his pawed at the ground.

Steele growled back and licked his lips.

Nikki and Kaltag jumped in the way.

«Guys no, we don’t need to start a fight.» said Kaltag.

Star took one last look at Balto and sighed. «Let’s just go home.» he said as he hung his head and tail.

The group of dogs slowly turned around and walked back to Balto’s team house, dragging Jenna along with them.

Meanwhile, Balto had slowed to a walk, and was slowly making his way into the wild. He came to a small puddle that froze into ice. He saw his reflection and noticed that he was still wearing the golden collar. He wondered if he should take it off and leave it, since he could never return to Nome, not even his boat. He had no use for his collar anymore.

Balto sat down and tilted his ears and head back, but before he could howl, Kemo walked up to him. Balto raised his ears and looked to the left, at Kemo.

«Balto? What are you doing out here?» Kemo asked as he tilted his head.

Balto sat down. «It’s a long story, but to make it a little shorter, You already know the beginning, so then me and the dogs came up with a plan to prove I was telling the truth, and me and Steele attacked him, I got caught, Steele didn’t, the vet wants to kill me, the dogs rescued me, so now I have to leave the town and never go back.» Balto explained. He stood up and started to walked further from the town.

Kemo jumped in front of him.

«So your just gonna run away from your problems?» Kemo asked.

«Do I have a choice?» Balto said. He started to walk around Kemo, but Kemo once again jumped in his way.

«What about your family and friends?» Kemo asked.

«You think I haven’t thought about that?» Balto yelled. «But I have to, if I stay, I’ll be killed, there’s no other option.» Balto explained.

Kemo couldn’t think of anything else to say, so he just sighed and lowered his ears.

The two walked next to each other, going further and further away from Nome.

«So what do you plan on doing out here?» Kemo asked.

«Survive.» said Balto.

«It’s really hard to kill your food once you catch it when your alone. Your size doesn’t matter, as big as I am, it’s still hard...even if your in a pack.» Kemo said sadly.

Balto hesitated to speak, wondering if he should ask or not. «What happened to your pack?» Balto asked

Kemo sighed. «We were out hunting.» he began. «Everything was going fine, we were walking towards a big moose that we were going to eat. And all of the sudden, we heard a gunshot, the bullet just missed my nose by an inch. Me and the pack ran for our lives. Sometimes I heard several gunshots going off at the same time, I realized there was more than one hunter, but that didn’t slow me down. Me and the pack kept running. When I got back to the den, I turned around to make sure that everyone made it, and that they were alright. But when I looked around, there was no one there. I howled for them, but no answer. I ran back to where we found the moose, and I found my pack. All of them were lying dead on the ground, blood everywhere. Even my mate was dead, not one of them survived. I’ve been on my own ever since.» Kemo explained quietly and sadly.

«I’m sorry.» Balto said. «But I’ll stay with you.» he added.

Kemo looked at him. «Thanks.» he said with a smile.

«We better hurry back to the den, it’s almost pitch black out here.» Kemo suggested.

The two ran as fast as they could back to Kemo’s den. When
