hers.

They then broke the kiss, and they fell silent, their faces blushing fiercely. Jenna had both paws over her mouth, not sure what to do or say. No one had ever kissed her that way, and even though it was only a few seconds, it felt like a lifetime. She didn't know how to react to the kiss, but her body was getting warmer, her cheeks burning with embarrassment.

She looked over at Steele, who had his back turned, his fur blowing in the cold wind brushing past them along the rafters of the Canine. She couldn't believe it. This was really him; this was really the Steele that she once knew. Only that Steele from Perros, the little malamute dog that rescued her banana from the ocean. Only he would kiss her, and probably love her too. Her heart fluttered, even more than when Balto confessed his love for her. It was a feeling that she longed for, after all those years of being alone, of being lost and afraid of the world.

Could this really be happening? Does this mean that...Steele...

"Steele," Jenna began, breaking the silence between them, "You...do you...do you really..."

Jenna was then silenced, as Steele came up to her, and placed a paw on her mouth, silencing her. He had a glimmer in his eyes, one that Jenna had never seen before, one that she hadn't seen in a long time.

"No more talk of darkness...forget these wide-eyes fears...I'm here, nothing will harm you...my words will warm and calm you," He sang this in a somewhat an almost great sort of tone, his bass was quite fantastic, as it made Jenna's heart skip a beat. The malamute felt more confident this time, as he then put his and Jenna's paws together, "Let me be your freedom, let daylight dry your tears...I'm here, with you, beside you, to guard you, and to guide you..."

Jenna felt a bit of inspiration fill her brain, as she continued the song, "Say you'll love me, every waking moment," She could almost hear the instruments playing in the background, "Turn my head with thoughts of summertime...say you'll need me with you, now and always...promise me, that all you say is true...that's all I ask of you..."

Steele then quickly responded, "Let me be your shelter, come with me tonight, your safe, HE will not find you...your fears are far behind you..."

"All I want is freedom, a world with no more night...and you, always beside me," She then caressed his face, "To hold me, and to hide me..."

The malamute replied with a much more louder tone, "All I ask is when this nightmares ended...when your fears and woes have died away...you'll recall the dog you once befriended...now a man, a man in love with...love me, that's all I ask of you..."

"Say you'll share with me, one love, one lifetime...say the word, and I will follow you..." Their voices then collided with each other, their voices in unision, "Share each day with me (Share each day with me) each night (each night), each morning (each morning)..."

Steele then placed his paws over Jenna's body, as they slowly rose up on their hind paws, "Say you love me..." Jenna sang, smiling.

Steele replied with a grin, "I love you..." They then sang together again, "...That's all I ask of you (That's all I ask of you!)...!" The two then kissed again, and Steele drew her up in his arms, and the two began to do a little waltz, as the music in their heads guided them safely across the platform. The two could feel the warmth from each other's fur, as Jenna laid her head against Steele's strong chest. Nothing could pull away or prevent them from loving each other; they were in sync, their love destroying any fears or doubts that Jenna had held within her. Eventually, the two finally reached the end of their song.

"Annnyywheeerrrre… yooou go," They loudly vocalized, "let me go toooo…!" The two then stared into each other's eyes, as they got closer and closer to each other, "Love me…that's all I ask…of…yooouuu…" As their voices slowly dissipated, and the imaginary music around them finally faded away, they two kissed one final time

After they broke the kiss, the two then started laughing with each other, as Jenna playfully tackled the malamute on his back, as she snuggled up next to him. Steele smiled as he looked at his love, and Jenna laid next to him, her paws in the air. A strange, fuzzy feeling suddenly came into his chest. It was something that he hadn't felt in a long time since they were pups and the two felt happy. It was a nostalgic feeling that had been lost for 15 years, and it finally returned not just as friendship, but as true, passionate love.

"I love you, Jenna," Stephen said, licking her face. Jenna winced as she was licked a few times, and smiled back at the malamute. She felt so much better after that, and much like the lyrics had said, she no longer felt scared or worried, despite the feeling like someone was still watching the two lovebirds. They stayed there for a while, as they watched the night stars' twinkle over the city, which seemed to be filled to the brim with romance and love.

Steele breathed out through his nostrils, taking in the cool, night air, but when he opened his eyes, he saw Jenna get up from her place.

"Jenna, where are you going?" He asked, rolling over on his side.

"I just remembered, I have to perform as Marguerite tonight. Are you coming to watch, Vicomte?" She asked, wagging her tail slowly, caressing it over the malamute's chin.

"Oh course I am." He said, quickly getting up, "You lead the way…love," He smiled, and Jenna smiled back. The two huskies then slowly descended the steps from the platform, their warm love still fresh in their hearts.

As moon finally rose up over the city of Paris, the cold, swift winter breeze came over the Canine's rooftops, all the way up to Apollo, who, if one looked closely enough, was being perched by what might be confused as a black bird, with his large, black cloak outstretched by the wind, almost like wings, and his cold, dead paws scratching at the gold lyre, his claws leaving marks on the strings.

He had been standing behind the statue of Apollo's Lyre, listening in on the two husky's conversation. He heard every, single, word, every sentence that was said, and every note they had sang, and he nearly clawed his already horrid face off as he heard the song they were singing and their little dance upon the parapet, almost like they were involuntarily mocking him behind his back. This dark figure was a wolf-dog, his face covered by a black mask. He groaned and cringed, as his lean, lanky body scaled up the statue's back, where he now stood, his hind legs skillfully balancing on Apollo's outstretched arms, his front paws dangling down over the golden instrument above him.

Why...why Jenna...I thought you...grrrrr...He felt a slight pain somewhere in his chest. I thought you loved me...I thought you would somehow understand me...and look past my...grrrrrrrr! The pain suddenly came back, this time even harder than before.

"You...you...l-lied to me..." He whimpered, his body shaking violently. He felt his lead lean back, yellow eyes gazing up into the night sky, "I gave you...my music..." His voice trembled with pain and sorrow, "Made your song...t-take wing...A-And-d n-now...how you've r-repaid m-me..." He then sobbed, "Denied...me and...betrayed me..."

He then hung his head, as it positioned itself right on the golden lyre's strings, "He was bound...to LOVE you...w-when he heard you...sing..." He couldn't control himself, as he felt hot tears of pain pour out of the holes in his eyes, and trickle down his blood red face. He had never felt this sad in all his life, he felt like the entire world around him was crashing down.

Until...he heard it...was it in his mind...was it some kind of sound off in the distance? No, it was crystal clear in his head, the voices of his beloved Jenna and that other dog, their voices echoing and vocalizing in his mind.

"Say you'll share with me...one love, one lifetime..." The hybrid's eyes went wide, as the voices penetrated his skull. He clamped his cold paws on his ears to try and drown out their voices, but it was too much for him.

"No...stop..." He begged, but the voices drowned him out, "Say the word...and I will follow..." Balto nearly screamed as he pictured Jenna dancing again with that other dog. Balto never liked Steele de Chagny, though he never spoke of him around Jenna, for fear of possibly losing her. But now, it was far too late.

"Aaaargggghhhhh!" He cried, as the pain returned, only this time it was a pain that made him groan and grunt. He howled out in agonizing pain, his body aching with grief the likes of which the hybrid had never felt before. That cry pierced the silent night, as he clutched his chest, his heart almost collapsing in on itself from the strain. He hated Steele, he hated Jenna. He wanted to destroy them, and ruin them, so they could never belong to each other ever again.

Wait...he thought, as he felt a small twinge of pain in his head, now I know...now I know...what to do...

Thanks, it's no problem at all. I'm still working on the rest of the story, just been a while since i've been on here.

Ah yes, the Inspector is a character that I've created solely for this story, and perhaps I might continue to use him in some other stories (if not with animals than with humans, as creating detective characters is always fun.)

Also, his progression from naive detective to Inspector of Police is based off of Gaston Leroux's short story, The Case of the Yellow Room, just a little fun reference.

Quite gripping. You did the boxkeeper's description of her encounter very well.

Back after a long hiatus.

Page 13 (end of Chapter 3): Uh-huh; that's the Steele I remember, alright.

The detective character, Jean-Claude, intrigues - particularly as I've recently begun work on a couple of police-related stories.

My apologies for taking so long to get back to this.

I totally know what you mean. Jenna and Steele just seem like a very unlikely couple. It's like Nala and Scar in the Lion King. You just don't do it!
But I can assure you, there will be some good Jenna and Balto scenes in this as well. ;)

Yeah, I've noticed that you're into mostly anthro Balto fanfics, and I just wanted to clear up that yes, they, and everyone else in the story, is a feral animal, not an anthro one (I said that even though they're anthropomorphic, I was mostly referring to the definition, not necessarily stating that they were anthro characters.)

I don't know, I just felt it was sort of appropriate. Somebody actually commented on that as some point, and was wondering as to why I did that. I mostly wanted to keep them in their original forms since everyone is mostly familiar with it, and it's also reminiscent with movies such as All Dogs Go To Heaven, where some scenes have characters doing what they do in my story (wearing clothing, holding objects, etc.) Yes, I know, dogs don't wear clothes, but I think it's a fun little addition, just for the sake of this fan fic.

Also, that's kind of the whole point of this part. Jenna and Steele haven't met in like 13 years or so (well, just for this story anyway) so it would make sense for her not to recognize him.

Just chiming in here, since you and JC kind of lead into it; the first project on our collab list will not be anthro - just in case anyone was concerned about that.

Also, on to Page 12. Not bad, especially for a Jenna/Steele scene (which I usually detest, so getting a "not bad" out of me for one is pretty big). The description of them moving on all fours kind of threw me because when you describe them in clothes and so on my mind naturally drifts to a more "anthro" version of them. Also, I was kind of surprised at how long it took Jenna to connect the dots. Other than that, it's good.

I'm glad that you've enjoyed it. To tell you the truth, I'm also a purist for the original forms of the characters. And even though I stated that in the introduction, they are anthropomorphic, I was referring to that they have the same characteristics of the Balto film, they just have more human like qualities to them, such as wearing clothes and such. Of course anyone can interpret it in their own way, I hint in some of the chapters that they are still in their original feral forms.

Also, don't feel bad if you're not analyzing every aspect of the story. I'll take anything that I can get when it comes to comments or critiques. As long as someone enjoys it, it's good enough for me! :)

Yeah, it's a long one, since I wrote it in chapters, but I decided to just put the whole thing here. Might as well, but I didn't think it'd be as long as I originally thought.

Oh, I don't consider myself to be that advanced. I've just had years of experience, what with English always being my favorite subject in school. Always has. I may not write like the greats, but I know exactly what to put down, in order to give the reader something cool and interesting to read. And I'm glad you've enjoyed thus far! :)

O' Cap'n My Cap'n!
Okay, so, I have been pouring gradually through this, and I must admit, I am enjoying it! You have a keen writing style, which is pretty advanced (considering the relative writing skills of the average fan writer). A few thoughts:

1. I will continue to read the whole thing but, given that I have completed at least a few chapters, I feel that I have gotten the entire gist of this, enough to comment on it...

2. As I mentioned to DT with his recent submission, I am a purist when it comes to the characters. While I love seeing them in good and effective crossovers, I really am not a fan of anthro concepts. Now, that being said, you HAVE crafted an entertaining and engaging story line here, and it would be untrue to suggest that I am not enjoying it!

3. I guess the only anthro setting I ever have enjoyed (and continue to) is that created by Disney for the Robin Hood movie. For me, that worked. And I guess I have seen it that was because I viewed it years ago as a kid. It's another great crossover. And I SUSPECT that the "Zootopia" film will be likewise for me...I even have already made up my mind that it could work as a modern-day future of the Disney Robin Hood setting. Now that I can get behind! Not taking anything away from what you've crafted here of course.

4. While I am not a fan of the Phantom of the Opera epic (though I know the basics of the story, and went to read a full outline of it to get myself prepped for this read), I know it is a great work of literature, and I totally see why you chose it. Especially given the fact that you are a fan of that story.

5. I'm not much of a "Monday-morning quarterback", and I personally don't like to minutely analyze chapter and verse in comments. So you won't see that much from me (and I hope I'm not letting you down in that regard). The size of this work makes it very intimidating to try and flip back through and locate something to analyze in comments. I hope you don't mind!

All that aside, you really have crafted a very good story here so far, and I am impressed! It is a LOOOONG one (lol), perhaps the longest I've seen on Animation Source (as far as I can recall anyway), but I understand why it is as long as it is.

Best of luck with Part 2!

UPDATE: The 2nd part of this story is still being worked on, however, for those of you who don't wish to wait for the entire thing to be posted here, this story is also uploaded and updated on my DeviantArt account: HydeCorner, and on my Fanfiction account: Dante Frost.
Once I'm finished with the 2nd part, I will upload the entire thing here. Until then, feel free to follow along either my DeviantArt account, or on my Fanfiction account.

Also, for future stories, I am currently working with Dragon Tamer (Author of the Toby series and Balto's Treasure Island) or Omnitrix 12 on Fanfiction.net for a collab story. Be on the look out for that in the near future.

Peace!
