"Sorry, but I couldn't help myself. It just sounded so silly, and you acted like it was such a big deal."

Jenna then yanked her paw away from Steele's, "In case you haven't noticed, Steele," She remarked sternly, "it's a very big deal to me. Before my Father passed away, he promised he'd send the Angel to me, and he was right, he did send him to me, and he's made me happy, and he's given me back my will to sing again. I thought you, an old friend of mine, one that grew up with me would understand, of all dogs, but I guess I was wrong." She then walked away, only this time, Steele didn't follow her, since he knew he messed up badly, even more than when she left him at the park.

Steele returned to his seat, and sighed, as he slumped down in his seat. You just had to laugh, you idiot! You just had to! Steele couldn't contain his anger as he growled to himself, realizing that this was his fault. He'd never really thought that he might be the cause of this dysfunctional relationship that he was having with Jenna, but he was a proud dog, and it was clear that he wasn't about to take responsibility for this, even though he knew this argument was partially his fault, as was the previous one.

   Rather sad, that is.

I can't believe this girl. First, she confuses me by not recognizing me, even though she knows who I am and was, and then she tells me that her 'teacher' is an Angel from a fairytail? What is going on? What's her deal?

Steele rubbed his head and groaned, as this was all too much for him. Yet, he still stayed in his spot, as he waited for Jenna to probably come back to him (even though it should have been the other way around, if you want to know the truth) but after waiting for about an hour, he fell asleep waiting. He was soon awoken by the innkeeper, who snapped at him for not renting a room.

"Sorry about that, uh, here, take this," He responded, and he took out a few gold pieces from his coat pocket. The owner gladly took it, and told him to take any room. Of course, Steele wasn't about to stay in any room, and he continued to wait for Jenna to come out of hers'.

After another hour, he noticed that it was rather late, and he was about to fall asleep again, when he saw a cloaked figure walk out the front door out of the corner of his eye.

Jenna, Steele got up from his seat, and immediately raced out the front door, but came to a stop when he couldn't tell where she was, as the night had finally fallen down on the little village. He then remembered that Jenna was heading off to leave some flowers for her Father at his grave. Thankfully, he remembered where the cemetery was, which was located next to the Church of Saint-Jacques, which wasn't too far from the inn, and he quickly made his way down the road towards that church.

The chapel was a very standard place of worship, a small one that was used for weddings, masses, and funerals. Despite this, the entire cemetery was quite an eerie one once the malamute had made his way to the entrance gate. The only thing illuminating the place was the moon above them, so he had to squint in order to adjust to the darkness surrounding the gravesite.

He scanned the endless amount of statues and plagues and tombstones, and did his best to find the husky, and once he did he was about to go up to her, when he remembered that this was somewhat of a private moment for her, so he stayed back behind the gate.

He could see her wearing a cloak, which was actually dark blue, and she was standing in front of a statue that looked like an Angel holding a violin in its hands, with a small pile of skulls laced with roses at the base of the statue. Jenna laid down some small lilac flowers in front of the statue, and he could see her muttering something underneath her breath. As she did, Steele's ears perked as the sound of something soft drifted over the cemetery. It sounded like a violin was playing some sort of haunting and enchanting tune, one that wasn't familiar to the malamute. Steele thought he was hearing things, but he noticed that Jenna had also heard it as well, as she was looking around her, almost like she was trying to find the source of the music. It grew and grew from an alluring tone, to a louder, darker one, and it suddenly stopped.

Steele ducked down underneath some bushes when Jenna looked his way, and he had to cover himself with the leaves in order to not be spotted. However, when the malamute knew the coast was clear, he went back to the gate, but found that Jenna was no longer standing in front of the grave. She was gone.

Where did she go? Steele thought, as he didn't think that Jenna would leave so fast, but he didn't mind. After opening the rusty gate, he walked over to the statue where Jenna had laid the flowers at. The plague on the tomb read:

In Memory of Gustave Daae

Born September 2, 1832 – Died August 22, 1874

Beloved Musician and Father

Steele's eyes then made its way to the name of the statue, since it called itself the Angel of Music. It was truly a beautiful statue, possibly custom made, but the malamute didn't have time to look over statues. He had to find Jenna.

He made his way back to the chapel, and he knew it was far too late to look for her, and besides, he didn't know if she left Perros or went back to the inn. He was about to make his way back to the train station in defeat, when he thought he saw a dark figure move in the darkness.

Jenna! Steele immediately ran up to figure, which was walking up the steps of a church. The figure was wearing a cloak as well as a hood, which was the same one that Jenna was wearing. It had to be her. Steele ran up to the figure, who looked like he was about to go inside the chapel.

"Jenna, I-," Steele was cut off as soon as he grasped the figure's shoulder, and strangely, it felt awfully cold, almost deathly cold. He soon found out why as the cloaked shade turned around to face the malamute.

Steele's eyes went wide with shock as this figured stared at him from underneath its hood. What freaked him out the most was the figure's head, as it was nothing more than a white, dog's skull, like he was wearing a macabre mask, with piercing yellow eyes glowing out of the hollow sockets.

Steele was completely taken aback by the figure, and the next thing he knew, he had lost his balance, and he tumbled down the steps of the church. He soon lost consciousness as soon as his head banged against the cold, hard gravel, and the figure atop the steps vanished like a shadow in the night.

Chapter 6

It was a nice Sunday morning, one day away from the first performance of Faust, and upon opening their office that morning; the three managers were met with a few notes, as usual. When they saw the same red skull wax seal on the letters, they groaned, realizing that the Opera Ghost was up to no good.

"Who wants to go first?" Kaltag asked his friends, who took their notes that were written for them.

"I'll go first," Nikki replied, and ripped open the envelope with his claws, and peered at the letter inside.

   To Monsieur Nikki Firmin,

My monthly salary is due, and must be paid in full. Please give the envelope to Madame Aurelia, as she will take it to the designated area of post.

   O.G.

"He wants his salary," Nikki told the others, "20,000 francs and all,"

"Well, isn't that nice?" Kaltag added sarcastically, "Why does he want so much? He might as well take everything from the bank!"

"He said he has 'other projects' that he's been working on," Star said, "But why would a ghost want money?"

   The trio shrugged their shoulders.

"My turn," Star ripped open his letter, and read it aloud:

   To Monsieur Star Andre,

I do not appreciate being spied on, especially when I am watching rehearsals. It is very rude, and I would like to be left alone.

   O.G.

"He knows…" Star answered gravely, realizing that what he saw might have been real, and not a hoax.

"Oh, Star, don't be silly." Nikki said, "We already told you it was just your imagination."

"Oh yeah," He then gulped, "Sure, how reassuring." The managers then jumped when the door to their office was opened, as a poodle walked into the room with her servant.

"Monsieur Managers," She said, rather crossly "I would like to have a word with you."

"Is something the matter?" Kaltag replied.

The poodle tossed her pink scarf around her neck, "You should know what the matter is, Monsieur, especially when you asked me to come here."

The Chinook raised a brow, confused, "What? I didn't send you anything."

"Jacques, the letter," She ordered her servant, who placed the letter in her paw, which she read aloud:

   Dear La Carlotta,

With all do respect, whilst we all appreciate your presence at the Opera Canine, we realize that your voice is not up to par, in comparison to Mademoiselle Daae, who, in my opinion, has a much more "refined and distinguished" tone,

Thanks, it's no problem at all. I'm still working on the rest of the story, just been a while since i've been on here.

Ah yes, the Inspector is a character that I've created solely for this story, and perhaps I might continue to use him in some other stories (if not with animals than with humans, as creating detective characters is always fun.)

Also, his progression from naive detective to Inspector of Police is based off of Gaston Leroux's short story, The Case of the Yellow Room, just a little fun reference.

Quite gripping. You did the boxkeeper's description of her encounter very well.

Back after a long hiatus.

Page 13 (end of Chapter 3): Uh-huh; that's the Steele I remember, alright.

The detective character, Jean-Claude, intrigues - particularly as I've recently begun work on a couple of police-related stories.

My apologies for taking so long to get back to this.

I totally know what you mean. Jenna and Steele just seem like a very unlikely couple. It's like Nala and Scar in the Lion King. You just don't do it!
But I can assure you, there will be some good Jenna and Balto scenes in this as well. ;)

Yeah, I've noticed that you're into mostly anthro Balto fanfics, and I just wanted to clear up that yes, they, and everyone else in the story, is a feral animal, not an anthro one (I said that even though they're anthropomorphic, I was mostly referring to the definition, not necessarily stating that they were anthro characters.)

I don't know, I just felt it was sort of appropriate. Somebody actually commented on that as some point, and was wondering as to why I did that. I mostly wanted to keep them in their original forms since everyone is mostly familiar with it, and it's also reminiscent with movies such as All Dogs Go To Heaven, where some scenes have characters doing what they do in my story (wearing clothing, holding objects, etc.) Yes, I know, dogs don't wear clothes, but I think it's a fun little addition, just for the sake of this fan fic.

Also, that's kind of the whole point of this part. Jenna and Steele haven't met in like 13 years or so (well, just for this story anyway) so it would make sense for her not to recognize him.

Just chiming in here, since you and JC kind of lead into it; the first project on our collab list will not be anthro - just in case anyone was concerned about that.

Also, on to Page 12. Not bad, especially for a Jenna/Steele scene (which I usually detest, so getting a "not bad" out of me for one is pretty big). The description of them moving on all fours kind of threw me because when you describe them in clothes and so on my mind naturally drifts to a more "anthro" version of them. Also, I was kind of surprised at how long it took Jenna to connect the dots. Other than that, it's good.

I'm glad that you've enjoyed it. To tell you the truth, I'm also a purist for the original forms of the characters. And even though I stated that in the introduction, they are anthropomorphic, I was referring to that they have the same characteristics of the Balto film, they just have more human like qualities to them, such as wearing clothes and such. Of course anyone can interpret it in their own way, I hint in some of the chapters that they are still in their original feral forms.

Also, don't feel bad if you're not analyzing every aspect of the story. I'll take anything that I can get when it comes to comments or critiques. As long as someone enjoys it, it's good enough for me! :)

Yeah, it's a long one, since I wrote it in chapters, but I decided to just put the whole thing here. Might as well, but I didn't think it'd be as long as I originally thought.

Oh, I don't consider myself to be that advanced. I've just had years of experience, what with English always being my favorite subject in school. Always has. I may not write like the greats, but I know exactly what to put down, in order to give the reader something cool and interesting to read. And I'm glad you've enjoyed thus far! :)

O' Cap'n My Cap'n!
Okay, so, I have been pouring gradually through this, and I must admit, I am enjoying it! You have a keen writing style, which is pretty advanced (considering the relative writing skills of the average fan writer). A few thoughts:

1. I will continue to read the whole thing but, given that I have completed at least a few chapters, I feel that I have gotten the entire gist of this, enough to comment on it...

2. As I mentioned to DT with his recent submission, I am a purist when it comes to the characters. While I love seeing them in good and effective crossovers, I really am not a fan of anthro concepts. Now, that being said, you HAVE crafted an entertaining and engaging story line here, and it would be untrue to suggest that I am not enjoying it!

3. I guess the only anthro setting I ever have enjoyed (and continue to) is that created by Disney for the Robin Hood movie. For me, that worked. And I guess I have seen it that was because I viewed it years ago as a kid. It's another great crossover. And I SUSPECT that the "Zootopia" film will be likewise for me...I even have already made up my mind that it could work as a modern-day future of the Disney Robin Hood setting. Now that I can get behind! Not taking anything away from what you've crafted here of course.

4. While I am not a fan of the Phantom of the Opera epic (though I know the basics of the story, and went to read a full outline of it to get myself prepped for this read), I know it is a great work of literature, and I totally see why you chose it. Especially given the fact that you are a fan of that story.

5. I'm not much of a "Monday-morning quarterback", and I personally don't like to minutely analyze chapter and verse in comments. So you won't see that much from me (and I hope I'm not letting you down in that regard). The size of this work makes it very intimidating to try and flip back through and locate something to analyze in comments. I hope you don't mind!

All that aside, you really have crafted a very good story here so far, and I am impressed! It is a LOOOONG one (lol), perhaps the longest I've seen on Animation Source (as far as I can recall anyway), but I understand why it is as long as it is.

Best of luck with Part 2!

UPDATE: The 2nd part of this story is still being worked on, however, for those of you who don't wish to wait for the entire thing to be posted here, this story is also uploaded and updated on my DeviantArt account: HydeCorner, and on my Fanfiction account: Dante Frost.
Once I'm finished with the 2nd part, I will upload the entire thing here. Until then, feel free to follow along either my DeviantArt account, or on my Fanfiction account.

Also, for future stories, I am currently working with Dragon Tamer (Author of the Toby series and Balto's Treasure Island) or Omnitrix 12 on Fanfiction.net for a collab story. Be on the look out for that in the near future.

Peace!
