Shadey runs from home.
Shadey, a young Alaskan malamute was wandering; blank mindedly, the streets of Nome. She felt un-wanted. Her three friends, Angeles, Nicole and Kalula were pretty tied up with friendship problems with other dogs. Shadey thought they made it up so they could spend time together without Shadey. The only dog she could really spend time with was her brother, Roman-reigns. He and Shadey never had the same interests except for sledding. But she had nothing else to lose. She found the alley where he was strangely staring at the other wall. She walked up
-Roman, Roman,
Roman didn’t reply to his sister so she tried again only waving her paw in front of his face.
-Earth to Roman, Earth to Roman.
-What, what’s going on?
-Trying to talk to you is what.
-Oh, sorry, I was thinking about someone.
-Does that someone happen to be Aleu?
Roman shook his head. They suddenly hear the voice of their father, Steele.
-Shadey, Roman, come on, we’re going on a little trip to Nenanna.
-Why?
-Just a little family trip.
-Does it just so happen we’re using the sled?
-Okay, Shadey, you caught my drift. I’ll explain when we get home.
The three went home for lunch.
-So dad, you said you’d explain.
-Me and your mother decided to test what you know about sledding, so we got the sled ready.
-Are we running along the trail you took?
-Yes, but try not to get us lost, Roman.
Roman snapped out of his day dream at the sound of his name. Shadey excused herself and pulled Roman into the living room.
They went back to lunch. Shadey was very frustrated that she probably didn’t get lead. In fact, she was almost positive she didn’t get lead.
When everyone was asleep, Shadey slipped through the window.
-Don’t look back now, Shadey. Don’t look back.
And she ran off into the cold night. Tears dripped from her mixed color eyes as she ran across the snow. She was getting tired. But by a random stroke of luck, she ran just far enough to reach a nearby town.
-This is going to have to do for tonight. I’ll leave tomorrow morning.
She walked in as if she often visited the town. A lot of dogs, mostly Huskies, stared her down. She felt so small even if she is a malamute. She was watching the other dogs behind her instead of watching who was in front of her.
-Shadey?
Shadey looked in front of herself to see who had just called her name. It was an old friend.
-Keiko? Is that really you?
-Yes, it’s me.
-It’s been so long! How are you?
-I’m good. How about your family?
-The usual. Dad won’t treat me like a 1 year old.
-Maybe you could kick up on responsibility.
They walked along on a new conversation. Shadey hoped Keiko wouldn’t bring up the first conversation. Yet, Shadey still had to find somewhere to stay for the night. She just so happened to find a comfortable looking alley way.
-Alright, Keiko, I’ll see you later. I’m leaving tomorrow.
-Going back home?
-No, I’m running from home.
-Where are you going?
-I don’t know, the Yukon maybe.
-In Canada?!
Shadey didn’t give a reply to Keiko. She walked to the alley she had her eye on. She quickly fell asleep. She dreamed of going to the Yukon. She knew, since she was a pup, the Yukon was just across the Alaskan border. She always wanted to walk/run there. But she often questioned if things were much different from Alaska town wise.
She woke up to a nice warm and bright sun upon her smooth, black coat. She set out immediately promising herself something to eat on the way to the Yukon. She could hardly wait. But she had a lot of Alaskan terrain to cover. She planned to go through at least three towns before she stopped for the night. About halfway to the second town, she found sled tracks. They leaded to the town. It was getting dark but she wanted to cover more ground before the next day so she took the risks and traveled at night.
It was about 11:00 pm that she stopped and got something to eat. She fell asleep quicker than the night before. She had the same dream as the night before.
The next morning, she woke up to a cold breeze and barely any sun. She was glad she had a thick, warm coat. She continued her journey to complete her dream. She was taking it easy until her muscles were warmed up. She found wolf tracks.
-I should be careful not to pass into wolf territory.
The only gaol she had for today was to not stop anywhere for sleep until she was down to the bone no energy. Of course she would eat something to keep up the energy. She was hoping not to run into anymore trouble from anyone she already knew. She had her head hung up high in case she ran into a wolf. But what she ran into wasn’t a wolf, it was Angeles!
-Angeles, what are you doing out here?
-I’m walking home from a vacation. Are you going somewhere?
-Yeah, away from home. Maybe even never go back home.
-Why? You love your family.
-Yeah but I’m old enough to conduct my own life. Roman’s just a suck up to mom and dad.
Shadey ran away after that phrase. Angeles shrugged and continued walking to Nome. Shadey soon ran into some thin ice and she saw no other way around it but over it. She thought she had nothing to lose so she took the risks to cross it. She cautiously crossed the ice by lightly tapping the surface with her paw so she wouldn’t fall in. In about a half hour, she finally crossed it safely. She ran at about mid speed. She saw a little town ahead so she decided to stop for something to eat. Because she had no breakfast, she was starving. After her little snack, she set off again.
By the time she had no energy left to spare, she stopped where she was and fell asleep. She was about 20 miles away from the Alaskan border.
She slept in by 2 hours. By the time she realized that she shot up as if someone threw her into the Atlantic Ocean. She stretched and bolted. After 10 miles she barely slowed her pace. She stopped at 15 miles to rest so she could give it all she had to make it into the Yukon. About 15 minutes later, she took off at a little more than mid speed. As soon she knew she was getting very close to the border, she gave absolutely everything she had. She leaped across the invisible line and howled in joy!
-I can’t believe I’m actually here! My dream came true!
She pranced around on Yukon soil. She was so happy that it was pretty much impossible to describe her joy. She ran off to the nearest town. Despite her joy, she was also exhausted from running with all her might from Alaska to the Yukon. She settled down in a comfortable alley.
A week has passed and Steele and Éllène still had no clue Shadey passed the border over to Canada.
-Steele, do you think she was jealous of Roman?
-I think so. She has always wanted to be a step or two ahead of Roman.
- They could’ve leaded us together.
-That’s what I was going to do.
Steele and Éllène continued to search.
-Steele, do you think she could have crossed over to Canada?
-She always has wanted to go to the Yukon but never like this.
Little did the two know, they were being followed by Keiko.
-Steele! Éllène! I know where Shadey is!
-Keiko? How would you know?
-She bumped into me on her way to the Yukon!
-She’s probably in the Yukon by now!
The couple ran off leaving Keiko behind.
By next Monday, they were red hot on Shadey’s trail. She was soon in sight! Steele ran up.
-Shadey! What were you thinking?
-I wanted to get as far as possible away from home so I thought the Yukon was the perfect place.
-I and your mother were scared to death! You know better!
-I especially wanted to get away from my brother.
-Shadey, we wanted to put you and Roman in double lead.
-You could have been more specific!
- Stop it, you two! Let’s get a ride home on that train. Roman will be alone for too long if we run or walk.
The three left the Yukon. On the train ride home, Shadey stared at the scenery for hours at a time, taking in every breath. Her parents preferred to be more inside the train.
They made it to Nome safe and sound. When they got home, Shadey ran to Roman.
-Roman, I’m so sorry!
- About what? I forgave you after you left!
-How?
-I prayed that you’d be okay and at the same time I apologized.
-Oh, thank you! Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?
-Yes, be my sister!
- I love you Roman!
- I love you even more Shadey!
-No! I do!
As the two fought about who loved who more, they were being secretly recorded by their father.
-Shadey, with every action, th....
-Yeah, yeah, there’s a consequence.
-Box the attitude, missy.
-So, what’s my punishment?
- You’re grounded for a week.
- I don’t care what it is! As long as I’m with my brother! Group hug!
