My parents had me cover my eyes, even though I wanted to see it SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO badly, I kept my eyes closed. My parents said it was a surprise, so I was SUPER-DUPER excited.
"Ok. You can open your eyes now." The salesman said.
I uncovered my eyes and right in front of me was a sled! A real sled! I was speechless. My parents got me a sled!
"I love the rudders! I love the sled!!!" I said.
"Ok, Jenna, you're the lead dog. Ok, Mush!!!" I hooked Jenna, my dog, to the sled. She looked happy and a real champion on that fine sled!
"Then you need this." My mom pulled out a musher's hat and placed it on my head.
"A musher's hat! We're a real dog team, now!!!" I jumped on the sled. "Mush!" Barking happily, Jenna raced out the door and onto the snow.
"Whoa, Jenna! I forgot to say thank you." I got off the sled and ran inside.
Hugging my parents I said: "Oh, thank you! thank you!!" Then i ran outside and got back on the sled. Then the second mile marker sounded. "The second mile marker! Mush, Jenna, mush! Let's win this race,!!!" Jenna barked happily and ran to town where the race was being held.
"Jenna, easy girl. Whoa." I said as we got the finish line.
After a few moments later, Steele and his team were in view. Star, Kaltag and Nikki were close behind.
"Go on, Steele!" I waved my hat at him. Then a strong wind took my poor hat out of my hand and onto the track.
"My hat!" I tried to run to get my hat, but Jenna grabbed my sleeve.
I knew she was right. I could never get it in time. Steele and his team were seconds to running on it. My mom was going to kill me! Tears started to fill my eyes. Even though my vision was blurry, I could see Balto run in, grab my hat, and slided to the sidelines! My hero! the tears never left my eyes. I couldn't believe it! Balto saved my hat!
"Balto! What a crazy thing to do!" I said when he gave me my hat. "Just to show off for a pretty girl." I teased.
I had seen Balto stare at Jenna countless times. I knew he liked Jenna for a long time now. Then I wanted to see Balto attached ot the sled.
"I'm sure Jenna would love to have you could be on her team." I said, trying to attach Balto to my sled, but my dad grabbed me and kicked snow at Balto.
"Rosie! Stay away from him!"
"Dad!"
"He might bite you, honey," He reasoned. "He's part wolf."
Balto looked hurt and mistreated. He walked away.
"Aw, Now you hurt his feelings!" I whined.
Dad didn't hear me.
"Come one." he said, taking my sled. I had no choise.
Everyone treated Balto like this. It wasn't fair! Balto might be part wolf, but that doesn't mean he'll bite. Balto's gentle and kind. I wish people would treat him more nicely.
That night, I started to cough and wheez. I was freezing and uncomfortable. My throat got sore really fast. Mom and Dad said I need to go to the hospital. The whole family went, but Jenna had to stay outside of the hospital. The doctor was nice, but i still wanted to see Jenna.
He listened to my heart, felt my throat, checked my temperature, and other tests. The whole time i thought about Jenna, and Balto. I wish they were here. He put me in a hospital bed and told me good night.
"I'm so cold." I managed.
"I have another blanket for you. You stay warm and get some rest." He walked away. My dad followed him.
That night wasn't so great. A bunch of other kids were also sick. By morning, I had gotten worse. Mom cried. dad looked misrable, too. I wanted to tell them not to worry and i'll be OK, but I was too tired and whenever I had the energy to say something, I end up coughing instead of saying I'm OK. Jenna was allowed visit me sometimes. She wept, too. I could tell. I didn't want her or anyone to cry.
I wanted to see Balto. I wanted to see Balto's face, but not a crying one. I wanted to see Jenna's happy face, too. I wanted to see my partent's smiles. But they cried instead. I didn't know what I had, but I knew I was going to get through this.
Days past. I got worse. I felt like I didn't have a single ounce of energy. Even though no one said it, I knew me and the other kids were dying.
One day, I woke to my mom's smile. Then, I knew I was better. I was going to see everyone smile again! I saw that other kids were better too! Yes! I hugged my mom and dad. Then I saw Balto near my bed, holding my musher hat. He was smiling!
"Balto," I said in a soft vioce. I was a bit tired, but not tired enough to hug him. Taking my musher hat, I wrapped my arms around his neck. "I wouldn't have made it without you. Thank you."
Then I saw Jenna smile, too. Yay! After I got settle back home, The family had cake and Jenna and Balto had wieners! Yummy! :D
