Coming Home
Balto, Steele told me
how you were gone,
how you were lost,
how you weren’t coming home.
But I don’t believe him.
I believe you are alive,
coming home,
coming for Rosy and me.
Steele told me
that you had asked him
to protect me.
But I know how you really feel.
Everyone else believed him
--all the dogs in Nome.
But I don’t.
I’m the outcast now;
I know how you feel,
how you’ve felt all your life.
Or do I?
This is because of what I’ve done;
the rest is because of who you are.
Because you are part wolf,
people want you dead.
But nothing could make me believe
you were dead.
I needed a way to guide you
--to guide you back to Nome.
But then I remembered
what you showed me under the hospital:
the Northern Lights.
‘The most beautiful spot in the world,’ you called it.
But I know you were thinking of me.
Now,
as I place this lantern,
these broken bottles,
these lights will guide you
to the most beautiful spot in the world:
Home.
With me.
Everyone else believed Steele,
but I didn’t.
I don’t.
I believe you are coming back.
Coming home
to Rosy and me.
You will save Rosy
when you come back.
Come home,
Come home to me;
I need you.
Balto, come home!
