The Wolf of the Night
By-Geothe54wolf
I woke up to the sound of sharp toneless spatters of rain on the window of the garage, I groggily stumbled to my sleeping paws to snuggle up closer to my mother, Rosie, and my brother and sister, of whom did not possess names yet. I nosed my way through the three sleeping bodies and curled up into a ball encasing myself in the warmth of their fur. I was the smallest of the litter of three puppies, and I knew this, because my brother was twice my size, he was leaner, more muscular and, more mature than my sister and I... That morning, everything changed. I woke up again to the sound of loud drumming footsteps as a large lumbering man stomped across the concrete floor of our home, he forcefully kicked me and my siblings away from our mother in one swoop, we were thrown tumbling into the wall of the garage, I could hear my little sister whimpering, and I knew she was in pain, even though I was paralyzed with fear a random conscious came to mind to defend my siblings cowering into each other against the cold gray wall. The fearsome man lifted our mother by her scruff and threw her mercilessly across the garage, I heard a faint snap echo through the building as my mother fell to the floor, unconscious, the man stumbled slightly. I gazed up at him, his eyes were bloodshot and crossed, and he swayed on the spot and turned his unfocused eyes upon us, I raised my hackles and snarled viciously at the intoxicated man hoping to frighten him, to warn him to back off. He didn’t listen to the warning, so as he took a shuffling step forward, I lunged up to his hand and dug my teeth into his open palm. The man howled in rage and waved his arm around attempting to dislodge me from his skin, I hadn’t gotten a grip on his hand at first, but after the crazed man brandished his hand through the air a couple of times, I got enough hold to crunch down on his bones with as much force as possible with my small jaws. blood spurted out of the wound slowly and trickled down my throat I tried to ignore it as much as possible, and dug down a second time, I heard a soft crack in the hand, at first, I thought I was just hearing things over the turmoil, but a louder, sharper crack rang through the air as I bit down a second time, I soon realized that I was breaking the small bones and tissues that made up his palm. So I bit and chewed and gnawed into his hand all the while the man screaming in pain and running in circles around the garage and waving his body around like some rabid monkey. finally I chewed through enough of his hand to feel my bottom canine with my upper canine, for extra measure, I placed my paws on the man’s body and pulled hi arm away, ripping the bloody wound apart even more so you could easily see through his hand. Drenched in blood I leapt away from the grievously injured man and galloped toward my family huddled around Rosie, I whimpered and nosed Rosie, but she would not stir, the crazed man got to his feet after sobbing into his good hand for fifteen minutes and stalked out of the room, slamming and locking the door behind him. For the rest of the day, the remainder of my family nosed and licked, prodded and cuddled our mother, but after a while, we realized that Rosie... our beloved mother, was dead. The next day we awoke again and moped for the rest of it.... until we escaped. Having the sharpest teeth of us all has it’s privileges I chewed my way through the garage door, with much caution and precision we eventually burst out into the open, I sped away up the road with my family through the streets of Nome, it was late at night, there were hardly any stores open this late, even so, we sped along the beach on the town outskirts until we came to a halt at a large boat that seemed abandoned all three of us silently boarded the beached run-down boat and found a small shelter and laid down to rest there. The next morning, we awoke to the sound of paw steps, instinctively we all huddled together and cowered in a corner. The dog padded over their way until he stopped at the door with a snow goose at his side, at first, we thought it was quite a spectacle, a wolf dog and a goose but as the wolf spoke through the awkward silence... 'who are you? you look frightened, whats wrong' we knew he was nicer than other dogs. we explained what had happened and he explaines that his name was Balto and later that evening, that he was holding a family reunion, 'would you like to join us?' Balto smiled reassuringly 'sure, that would be great' I exclaimed.
