Bright light and a flash.

I am here.

The trees waft in a cooling breeze I long to feel.

But I have no body to call my own.

Infront of me is a large grey building with a metal roof.

Passing through the glass doors I enter an atrium with a large boney creature on display.

Walking through a tunnel on either sides of me are exhibits to jewels and the Earth.

The attracting sensation I feel increases.

Rounding the corner in the back I see what I have come for.

Me, or at least what was me.

I look into the blank stare coming out of my eyes.

The lifeless dull gaze.

The race for life still burned into my memory.

The wind whipping through my fur and my lungs straining with every breath.

My heart slamming inside, the numbness of my paws.

My nose smelling the trail through the snow.

The final strain as we entered Nome and the grateful relief it brought.

But now that is only a memory long passed.

My fur has faded from its beautiful glossy black to a dirty brown.

Around the glass case in which I stand there is no marker or plaque to my deeds and those of the other teams

who raced to save lives in Nome.

Only a small box in which footage of me flashes quickly by.

I watch as the occasional visitor stops to watch then continues on.

Frowning as others don't give me a second look and walk by.

In life I was a hero to millions.

In death I am forgotten.

How did it come to this?

What events led me here?

Who will help me now?

Turning away I feel the tears roll down my cheeks.

Where's my hero?

Who will save me now?

Entering the light, I fade away.

Hoping for better future.
