||If Jenna Came||

By BlueThunderWolf

Chapter 1

“I`m fine,” whispered Jenna as she gently covered Balto`s torso with her own in an act to keep him warm. “Look, a message came through; we have to take the mountain trail.”

“But,” Balto shuddered as he spoke, “if we take Eagle Pass it`ll save us half the day.”

“It`s blocked,” Jenna replied, “the mountain trail is dangerous, but we can do it.”

“I`m beginning to see there isn`t anything you can`t do,” Balto murmured back, and Jenna flushed.

Balto then staggered to his feet, Jenna pressed right against him. “Boris,” he barked, “I think this is something Jenna and I should do alone. Take Muk and Luk home.”

Boris sighed, then pulled the wolfdog aside.

“Let me tell you something, Balto. A dog cannot make this journey alone, but, maybe, a wolf can.”

Balto huffed. Boris and his weird sayings.

He returned to Jenna, looking into her hazel eyes. “You ready to do this?”

Jenna smiled her angel`s smile, those eyes of hers twinkling. “As I said before, it`s dangerous, but we can do it.”

They nuzzled for a quick second, then, with one last quick look at Boris and the bears, dashed onto the ice, their blurred figures fizzing out and blending in with the unknown.

Chapter 2

The Sled Team- Star POV

Whirling winds wrapped around Star`s damp, cold fur as the dead night dragged on.  There he and his team lay, broken and helpless after Steele led them down a sheet of ice into a snowdrift.

He missed his home, his warm bed by the fireplace where he could get cozy at night. He missed Nome, in all its quietness and safety. He missed running around with Kaltag and Nikki and Steele like he used to.

Most of all, he missed his sanity.

He looked around at his half-frozen, desperate teammates, looking for any sign of hope or happiness that they all shared at the beginning of their journey.

But all he saw was empty, spirit-less dogs, huddled in small groups and scattered around in the white snow.

Steele sat on his haunches, motionless in a corner. What must be going through his mind right now, Star thought as he stared at the lead dog, if only I could know.

Kaltag and Nikki sat side by side a few feet away from him, just staring at the ground, their eyes so fixated Star thought they might freeze that way.

Star sighed, patience and hope draining from his soul. Awh, Nome`s too stuck with the sickness to be able to send a decent dog team to get out and track us down, and everyone else has lost hope. Our musher`s down, our Lead Dog has lost his mind. Maybe I should just mope around and give up, too.

Star folded himself up in the snow, curling in on him till he was a little, cozy gray ball. His warm bushy tail provided the much-needed warmth to his cold face.

We need a hero,Star thought, someone who will go past every predjudice and crime, risk and duty, to save us.

Star then stared up into the pitch-black night sky and whispered,

Balto…..

Chapter 3

Balto and Jenna

Lost within the deep, white snowdrifts, Balto and Jenna could be seen stumbling around in the snow as they searched for Steele and the missing team.

“We should look for tracks,” Jenna whispered, deep in thought.

“That`s a good idea, Jenna, but the tracks might have been covered by the blizzard that happened last night, or even covered earlier, depending on what day the team was lost in the first place.”

“Scents?” Jenna asked, “Do you think that those would be fresh?”

“Now you`re on the right track, Jenna,” Balto congratulated her, “though the snow may cover up the team`s tracks, we still should be able to pick up some scents of the musher and the team.”

Jenna smiled at the Wolfdog,  then placed her soft nose back on the ground as she continued searching.

“S-so, Jenna…” Balto shattered her concentration suddenly.

Jenna looked up. “Yes, Balto?” Her eyes burned into his, a mixture of concern and unknowing.

“Will you be happy to see Steele, when we find them?” Balto felt his fur prickle with embarrassment and unease.

“Oh,” Jenna whispered, her pelt burning, “oh.”

“Is that what this is about? Are you thinking what I think you`re saying, I mean.” The husky questioned.

“Well, in the boiler room the other night…”

“Balto,” Jenna whispered, understanding everything, “Why would you ever think that.” Her soft full tail twitched from side to side.

“Well, uh, your friends like him, the town loves him, he`s a champion sled dog, he`s…he`s…”

“Purebred?” Jenna whispered, her eyes opening as she grasped the point thw woldog was trying to make.

“Well,uh….yeah.” Balto turned his face to the side, ashamed that no matter how hard he tried, he would never be anything like his rival.

Jenna sighed, staring at the ground for a moment. I was true; Steele was everything Balto wasn`t, including purebred, but, deep down inside, she judged and loved a person by their heart, not their pedigree.

“So what`s the difference?” Jenna asked anyway.

“Well,” Balto murmured, years or torture and sadness filling into his expressions, “I`m considered a wild animal, your friends would spit on me if given the chance, I live on an old ship-wrecked boat, the town chases me out every time I go near them…”

“Balto,” Jenna whispered, shaking her head. She sighed again, beginning another short period of silence between them, before she got herself together and looked up.

“Well then let me tell you something, mister,” She padded forward and whispered in his ear, “I prefer my dogs mixed.” She licked Balto`s cheek tenderly.

Balto felt his fur prickle up and felt the warmth on his fur where Jenna licked him, flushing and shutting his eyes.

She likes me,He thought, a smile beginning to brim on the edges of his mouth, and I like her.

Or is it something more that I feel for her….?

“C`mon, crossbred!” Balto fell out of his thoughts to see Jenna atop a hill, swishing her tail excitedly. “We got a team to find!”

With all his hope renewed that Jenna had feelings for him, Balto dashed up the hill, and the canines disappeared in the distance.

Hmmmmm, I liked it!

The only part where Jenna says she prefers her dogs "mixed" and calling Balto "crossbred" as its a nickname. I understand this story is a "what if" story but those things......just doesn't seem like what Jenna would say..., in my view.

Other than that, I liked it and I await part II

Hey, this is good. And I can't wait to see the conflict when Steele tries to fight Balto over Jenna (that's something you know is going to happen some way or other).
