Original writing; short story; P.O.V of German Shepherd. I got a B for this assignment 2 years ago
All I can remember of being a puppy was playing with my brothers and sisters and then all of us where getting placed in a box in the middle of the night. We were all frightened; it was pitch black.
We were going over hedges and it was cold. Then it felt like we were being thrown and suddenly we were all wet and slowly sinking, I could feel myself going unconcious.
All I remember after that was waking up in a kennel with lots of food, water and blankets. I was shaking and still scared. I looked around. Where was my brothers and sisters? Where was my mum and dad?
I picked myself up and yelped then called for my family, there was no answer so I laid on my bed and cried myself to sleep.
The next morning when I woke up there was a tall, young lady with blue eyes and blondish hair, her name was Helen. She was just sat there, I barked at her, she stood up and walked over to me holding out her hand and calmly saying "I am not going to hurt you.".
She attached me to a long silver lead with a leather collar. She then walked me out of my kennel. I got scared and pulled on the lead as I was frightened, I didn't know where I was going.
Helen wasn't giving up and neither was I, she eventually had to drag me into a small white room, but I walked a little bit, continuosly pulling. In the room there stood a large, aggressive looking, nearly bald man. He was standing next to a table, his name was John. I was scared again, what was he going to do?
I was only small so I was picked up and placed on the table, I was shaking terribly with fear, I had an injection and my temperature taken. I was then placed on the floor and walked to another room down the corridor, it was another large white room. Helen sensed that I was nervous as well as scared so she continually talked to me calmly and tried to reassure me although I couldn't speak back. I could smell shampoo, the horrible stuff. In this room I had a horrid bath, which I tried to jump out of but Helen grabbed my collar and told me to calm down, then I had a trim and got tidied up. Although I didn't want a bath I felt relieved and a bit happy that I was clean and had a gentle hand.
After a day of nervousness I was walked to my kennel and was let off the lead and had my horrible collar removed, which meant I then could have a good scratch.
I was fed, had a drink of water then had an afternoon snooze. Later that day it was time for people to glance in our kennels and perhaps pick one of us.
I stared out of my kennel as if I was in a trance, then a face peered round the corner. It was a lovely looking lady, she was young and had rosy cheeks. She pointed at me and said "I like this dog". She looked at me in a kind way and I looked at her, my ears pricked up and my tail wagged rapidly.
The owner Julie invited the lady into her office and then in a few minutes she came to my kennel, walked in. I then realised I had been purchased. We walked out them kennels happy and then got in her car, it was like moving kennels but without the roof, I was allowed to ride in the front seat next to my new owner. I had been named Mia. My owner was called Karen.
When we arrived at my new home Karen had a strange bag, which I curiously sniffed, it was dog goodies. There was toys, treats and other dog stuff. I was scared when I walked through the door I behaved well though. Then without warning the door slammed and suddenly two children ran at me, their names were Harvey who was six, Lucy who was eight and the oldest who I didn't meet while the next morning was Rosie who was sixteen.
I lay down on the floor a little scared but with two youngsters pulling at my tail and ears rather than growling at them or biting as any other puppy my age would I decided to walk away leaving the two youngsters sulking. I jumped on the large, brown sofa and fell asleep next to Karen. I felt safe in my new home where I was loved, cared for and warm as a pup should be.
The next morning I woke up to the smell of sausages, it was a full English breakfast apparently. "Yum I hope I get some" I thought.
I walked through the big kitchen door with all the cupboards looking quite big considering my height. I sniffed around the large room, my stomach growled and I barked kindly for something to eat. Rosie fed me a sausage from under the table, it was chewy and delicious to eat, however still very hot.
Then a large, black haired man walked through the door. I let out a yelp and hid under a chair. I then walked out slowly and sniffed him he was known as 'Dad' to the children and known as Paul to Karen.
He turned around, went down on his knees and he stroked me gently. I laid on my back; he laughed and gave me a belly rub and I wagged my tail happily and licked his hand.
Later that day I was taken on my first walk; it was scary. I had to be dragged out the door but I finally gave up and just walked on happily. We were going to the shops apparently; they was big, scary looking buildings.
I knew this was going to be a start of a happy life.
