“Kodi and Dusty were happy , they had their ups and downs but that couldn’t change anything. They were going to be a family with pups and loving friends who would support them. Then… then Kodi ,my son, Did the stupidest thing ever he left his mate pregnant with his pups and went on a mail run, when he KENW that there had been deaths on that mountain before. And him, his team, his friends our friends. Died in an avalanche. So today, right now, is about my son his family and the friends he left behind in this world. My son was not only a son or a mate. Not only a friend but a brother as well but the sunshine of this town. Not a day went by that he didn’t bring a smile to my face. And I would like everyone to remember him as a hero. As my son and a piece of Nome that will never be forgotten.Kirby if you'd like to say a few words...?"

                                 Eariler that week.

                                       Kodi

“Kodi don’t leave me” Her voice was shaking and soft, and sweet. “Dusty I…well it won’t be very long. We’re taking the shortcut.” I smiled a fake smile hiding the pain and fear that invaded my mind. That showed in my eyes. “That’s what I’m worried about the..the shortcut.” Of course I knew about it I just couldn’t stay away that long from her despite everything that happened.  ‘His mind slips away to earlier in the boiler room.’ “Kodi?” Dusty's voice broke through my thoughts “Oh. I promise it won’t be long and my team is fast you know that.” There was my fake smile again. Why did my mind have to slip I wanted to remember Dusty’s face sweet and caring. I wanted to soak it all in. “Please be careful.” Her eyes showed all the pain all the sadness it nearly broke my heart. “Dusty you look faint you should be laying down.” I was true she was about to have my pups. She had to lay down I lead her to the neat little bed of blankets and she let out a sigh. She was beautiful and all mine. “Kodi hurry back please.” I looked deep into her eyes “I will.” “You promise?!” She asked. She was so cute mad I had to laugh but kept it down to a chuckle. I nuzzled her and whispered in her ear “I’ll always be with you.” I turned and ran out the door yelling “Goodbye my love!” Yes my love, my princess, my mate. My angel.

                                  A few hours later....

  “Hey Kodi. Look man I’m..” I cut him off fast I didn’t want to hear it. “Shut it Kirby! I’m trying to pull a sled here!” I knew this was harsh but. ‘He's mind slips away, back in the boiler room as he turns a corner his own voice yells out “Dusty! Kirby?!” “It’s not what it looks like.” Kirby’s voice came back nervously.’  I shook my head, I had to get back to my pups. I had hidden the pain from Dusty but with Kirby it was different. I kept running and speed up to full throttle we were going by the mountain pass. I had to be fast and careful. What some people didn’t know is that half the reason I was doing this was because I wanted so much to be a hero in Dusty’s eyes and if I made it past this ‘uncrossible’ mountain I would be.... “KODI!!!” What the…….

                                 Weeks after...

                                         Dusty

Balto’s speech was beautiful but still, how could I have been so inconsiderate? It was my fault Kodi was dead, I couldn’t look at my pups. I’m so stupid!! I hate myself, someone had even said that the pups were born the same time he died. If only these stupid pups weren’t in my stomach I could have been there with him and he wouldn’t be dead I’m sure of it. “Dusty what’s wrong?” My owner..‘Take them I don’t want them’  “I hope you don’t feell to bad about your buddy Kodi.”  I looked up at her ‘Take them.’ “The pups are going to be sold in a month or two, girl.”  ‘Yes thank you, thank you…’ I sobbed quietly.

          Back to the week before, during baltos speech...

  I opened my eyes catching a glimps of a white wolf ,a howl then it was gone.THe snow fell down and it seeped through my fur...What I thought would be the end wasn't quiet just that. 'I cant go back, not now...not after I lead my team to their deaths.I must run, and never turn back to them.I'm not a hero.I'm sorry Dusty.....I'll always be with you, my angel.'
