Okay, I'll face it. I'm lost. I thought. I looked up. The sky had gone from it's purple lake and pink clouds to blackness. But agaisnt all the blackness, I saw the bright stars. I kept walking, looking up, when suddenly I fell. I thought I twisted my paw, but I could still move it without pain, however, there was a small gash across it that ducked under my paw and cut my pawpad. I liked off some of the blood. I knew I wouldn't make it home before morning anyway, and I could hardly see anything, but a figure jutting out of the snow. It was a large rock, big enough to crawl ontop of, so that's what I did. I stood up and saw the path. A sled team would travel down here eventualy and take me back to Cody, so I just desided to stay and weight.
I rested my head on my cold paws, and then I saw it. I squinted my eyes to make sure. Down past the bushes, down the hill, down past the trees, there was a barbwire fence. I jumped when I saw it and my leg cracked under the force. I hit back down on the rock, bearly catching myself. I couldn't move. I wasn't paralyzed, but my leg was broken and my heart sank like a stone. That fence....that barb wire fence....was were part of me died. I can remeber my father Balto saying I had changed. I wasn't the same. I wasn't Zuko, but I knew the truth was...I never would be Zuko again. Half my soul is gone. I'm broken. My father's words echoed about my head. "You've changed."...."Were's my son?"......"Stop acting dead, your not yet.".....
I wished I was dead. I wished long and hard. But It didn't come true. I looked back at the fence. Then a terrible flashback struck me. But it wasn't a flashback. I wasn't dreaming I swear. A white thing had it's back turned to me. It's tail swished back and forth, back and forth. A rhytm. A heartbeat. Then It giggled and turned to me. "Hippolyte!" I yelled. Her eyes looked at me. For a split second she became tangable. She was there. Her fur twisted in the air. She was alive. But then....then the colors bled. Her eyes turned from theyre normal blue self to complete white, with a thick black circle surronding them. I could faintly see blood trickling down her sides. She was screaming but no sound came out. I closed my eyes and burried my head. Then I looked back up. She was gone. Gone again. How could this happen. Death was taunting me.
Hippolyte was a beautiful wolf. I'm only a fourth husky. I loved her, but death stole her. Death purged the earth of her and five and half puppies she had. A half? Well....there is one thing with me. Evander. From the tip of his nose to his shoulders he is me. The rest is his mother. But like me, he's only half her. Half here half gone. Dead. Like me. Evander means spot. We now call him Evan. Evander is too painfull. Spots are what killed his mother. I remember. The memory erased half my soul. Six pups. They were named by there mother. She didn't know it would be her death.
Byron...It means Cow. Haywood...It means fence. Darnell...It means tall grass. Spyridon...It means farmer. Alma...it means river. Evander...spot. Six pups. Then there was Hippolyte. Her name meaning taunts me. Magic. Magic is the abnormal, but this had to mean dark magic. The story burns my mind. I remeber her saying she was named Hippolyte because she was the best hunter in the pack. She would vanish but bring back meat on her own. She left her pack at two years of age without telling them the meat was stolen. Cow meat. When I met her I thought it was fair. A farmer on her territory had cows. So many many many cows. we picked off the weak.
I went with her. It was fun. We lied low in the tall grass surrounding the herd. There was a gap in the fence we got in and out of. But Hippolyte had a trick. She was born with simalar spots and a dark tail. Her tail blended in with the darkness (we would hunt at night) and the spots fooled the cows and sheepdog. They thought she was a calf. I crowched down as she got closer and closer until the cow was right beside her. Then she killed it quick and we both carried meant a few feet away and made mulitple trips to get as much as we could before day time. By then Hippolyte would be easily seen as a wolf.
I shifted my head. I re-positioned myself on the rock. I was falling asleep. I knew it would give me nightmares, but I was so so so sooooooooooooo tired. I fell asleep.
"Hippolyte! Please stay!" A grey wolf begged. "You shall take my place as alpha female and lead the hunt! May we all be as lucky as you!" She said. She was old, but like the rest of the pack, not overweight, but thicker than a member in a pack of twenty should be in the fall, when food was becoming scarce. Winter was comming. "Mother, I refuse!" Hippolyte growled. "I have taken care of a pack of twenty like an alpha, and I am finnished!" She snapped. "You have become but fools! I have to hunt for you! You are not real wolves!" She growled. "Find your own food! I will NEVER return to you!" She snapped.
A huge force knocked her over. She had cuts on the side of her snout. "I am the Alpha and do as I Say!" a black and brown wolf barked. "I am your father and you must stay until I release you!" Hippolyte bit down on his paw. It was streaming with blood. She ran and ran. Not only was she the best hunter in the pack, but the fastest. She cut a sharp turn and found herself and a narrow stream. She faked jumping it and let herself fall into the middle. The three wolves following her sighed. "She's dead." One snapped. "Your fault!" Accused another. "Idiots!" One howled until there was a three way fight.
Hippolyte jammed her muzzle into the open air. She had never held her breath so long. She had washed a mile or two down stream. She climbed out of the water and shook her coat. She coughed alittle. She stood up. She was shivering. She'd been injured on the rough journey there. Her ears were filled with water, and she felt dizzy. She lied down under a tree.
I've jammed my muzzle in alot of things, but never behind the ear of a wolf, and I never planned to until that day I found her. She was sleeping, and I was going to ask for directions. See, I used to be really wild before all this happened. I was tied down with a rope attached to my harness, and a squirrel came by. I went crazy and chewed through the rope to chase it. It ran up a tree and I wondered into the woods. There I found her. When she opended her eyes, I got lost and forgot to ask her how to get back to Nome. The rest after that was a blurr until one day, my old team came by...
They asked me where I'd been, and Cody was extremly happy to see me. I had to go back with him, but I couldn't leave hippolyte so I promised I'd be back. Cody took the harness I still had on and hooked me as the lead dog. I'd always wanted that, but now...nothing. I lead the team home and stayed there two days. I worked out a system. Everyday I was with them, and at night, Hippolyte. I slept when I found time.
A few mounths had pasted it felt like without me. I was tired and worn out. It was the beginning of Spring. Hippolyte said I could stay with Cody for one mounth solid because she hated me being so very very worn out. I was happy to get some rest but missed Hippolyte very much. Then late Spring, Cody's family scheduled to go to North Dakota to meet up with their realatives. I was Cody's prized possetion, so I always went wee he went outta town. I had to tell Hippolyted I'd be gone for a few months. She was sad but took it well.
I stayed in a wooden crate on his Grandparent's deck. They liked me, but I shed alot, so I had to stay outside. I looked at the stars. They reminded me of Hippolyte. I looked into the woods. Hippolyte. Grass. Hippolyte. I couldn't help but think how bad she needed me. I howled at night. I whinned at day. Everntualy, We went back. I ran straight for our den. At first I thought she had killed a rabbit, but I found out it was much differnt. She was carring a solid white puppy in her jaws. I stepped forward. "O-ours?" I asked. She nodded. "I diddn't-I left-I-" I was confused. I diddn't know pups were on their way. I guess I diddn't know because I'd been gone so long. She looked alittle bigger before I left, but I just assumed she'd..uh....eaten well latley? I dunno, but I was happy.
I brought back a couple of my teammates for the sled team. They were happy for me, but most laughed. "Zuko! Of all people!" But I wasn't mad. I got close to the pups, but then there came Winter.....
I woke up. A light snow was covering me. I shook it off. I was expecting to be in Cody's parent's den in the house. Next to the warm fire, but I looked back down at the fence. It racked my brain. So many bad memories, It seemed it was unreal. I fell back asleep.
I remember running. Running through the woods. Beside me was my best friend Arrow. Arrow was jet black with a grey mane and white arounds his paws. He was right beside me on the team. I was just alittle faster that day. I used to never beat him, but that day, that terrible day....I had just gotten the knews. Hoppolyte, along with all my pups...were dead.
I skidded to a stop at the den. Nothing was there. It seemed like a nightmare. My heart sank. "What
