an excuse cause he's crazy and all but-"
"I heard that!" Shak shouted from the other side of the clearing. I sighed and continued, "But what's your problem with me?"
Aery
"Because your annoying," I said flatly.
Ashton frowned, "Really, thats the best you could think of?"
"Fine," I said turning to him, "You are annoying, cocky, arrogant, not funny, you are a horrible hunter."
Ashton shook his head, "Fine, when you're ready to tell me the real reason, I'll be waiting." And he padded away.
I thought about what he said, what was the real reason I didn't like him? It was because we were the same, and that bugged me. I had been kicked out just like him, on my own, wondering where I belong. But when I came to the pack,I had to work really hard to fit in, and I still didn't. Ashton just fit in perfectly when he came, he made friends, I didn't.
I thought about it awhile more, it was getting later and the pack returned with nothing. "I guess you can't be successful every time," Avree said. There was still a little caribou left so everyone ate that until it was gone. Since Ashton had to eat last, there was barely any for him. I watched as he padded away into the forest, probably to find a rabbit or two. I figured if I was going to apologize, now would be the time. I padded after him but he didn't notice me, he was to intent on finding prey. I watched him catch a rabbit and start to eat it. Suddenly I didn't feel like talking to him anymore so I trotted back to camp. As soon as I padded into the clearing, Brideon bounded up to me, "Have you seen Ashton?" she asked me. "He's in the forest, why?" I asked. " Just wondered," Brideon answered bounding away in the direction I had come. Poor Ashton I thought to myself. Ashton I was chomping happily on my rabbit when out of nowhere popped Brideon. And now my day just got worse, I thought. She glided up to me with a smile on her face, "So Ashton," She said. I stood up as she got closer and took a tiny step backwards. "I was thinking," she continued. I took another step back, well this is awkward I thought. I knew exactly what she was thinking. She was in front of me then, batting her eyes, "Hmm... How should I put this?" she asked herself. My eyes got wider and wider as she nuzzled me. Well this is really awkward, I thought, what do I do? "Uh, Brideon?" I began. "Yes?" she said as she brushed her tail under my chin. This is extremely awkward! I screamed in my head. "I don't... like you," I said slowly. Brideon's smile vanished, "Oh," she said quietly. "Look, I think you're great and all but-" I was cut off as she said, "No, just don't say anything..." She bounded away into the woods, with tears forming in her eyes. I felt bad for hurting her feelings, but what else could I have done? If I had let her continue who knew what could've happened? I shuddered and trotted back to camp. It was late afternoon and everyone was getting tired. I padded over to Chakin and laid down, "So how was hunting?" I asked. "Boring," He moped. I laughed and laid my head on my paws. Soon I drifted off to sleep. I knew I was dreaming, but all I could see were flashes of light every once in awhile. I saw a wolf's eyes, piercing green eyes. I was terrified. Suddenly I felt a falling sensation, and then nothing but freezing black. I couldn't breathe. I was dying. I flailed my legs wildly, I felt something jab in my side and then I saw glaring white, burning my eyes. "Am I dead?" I said to myself. "What? No!" I heard a familular voice said, "C'mon we have a border patrol." My eyes adjusted to the light and I saw Chakin and Datoni waiting for me. I stood and shook out my fur and padded after them. In the forest, there was a breeze that was colder than normal. I realized that it would be fall soon. Chakin was to busy showing off to Datoni to notice the strange scent in the air. I sniffed warily. It was definatly another pack in our territory, there seemed to be three wolves but I wasn't completely sure. "Chakin," I whispered, "Do you smell that?" Chakin stopped and smelled the air, his fur bristling. Three wolves jumped out at us and I lunged at the nearest one. I pinned him down easily but he slipped out from under my and bit my right front leg. I howled in pain and anger and I whipped around and kicked him in the throat. He ran away gasping for air and I turned to help Chakin. He was trying to fight a wolf much bigger than himself and I ran to his aid. We fought side by side, nipping and scratching at the wolf until he and the other ran away. Chakin glanced at Datoni, she had a long scratch down her side. He let the injured female lean on him onour way back to camp. I limped, with my paw bleeding, ahead to warn the pack that more intruders might be coming soon. Shani helped me into the den where she but some herbs on my paw to keep it from getting infected. Datoni and Chakin joined me later. Chakin wasn't hurt, but I think he just wanted to stay with Datoni. "Thanks for your help," Chakin said to me. I shrugged, "No problem, thats what friends are for, right?" Chakin smiled and then looked down at Datoni. She would definately be alright, but she was in a lot of pain. I decided to leave and I limped out of the den. Aery walked right past me without even asking me if I was okay. Chinuk padded up to me then and said, "You better heal soon, we might have a serious battle with that pack soon." "Really?" I asked, my eyes glowing. Chinuk nodded solemnly and padded away. I limped away to a deer that the pack must have caught while I was on patrol. I ate my fill then laid down to get some rest. Aery It had actually been a rather boring day despite the problems with the bordering pack. I was sent to patrol along the border, and report anything suspicious. So far there was nothing. A brown figure appeared in the distance, and my fur rose. It came closer, it was a female wolf. "Who are you?" I asked menacingly. "It's just me, Brideon," she called back. "Oh," I said, calming down a bit. "Avree is worried sick about you," I said, "You should probably head back to camp. Brideon just nodded and trotted back towards camp. I knew that Ashton had hurt her feelings, but why had she run away? I decided not to ask and continued with my patrolling. Tanely came and took my place later and I made my way back to camp. I ate from the deer, then Shani padded up to me. She set down some herbs in front of me and said, "Could you put these on Ashton's paw for me? I'm pretty busy with Datoni." I didn't want to, but I didn't dare say no to the Alpha Female. I nodded and padded over to Ashton with the herbs. He was asleep so I jabbed him with a paw. He jerked awake and groaned when he saw me. I rolled my eyes and put the herbs on his paw. I padded away without saying a word. "Thanks," he mumbled. I flicked my tail to show that I had heard. I decided to see how Datoni was doing and I padded into the den. She was laying on her side, A long scratch exposed. She wasn't bleeding, but her fur was matted with dried blood. Chakin was by her side, and it looked like he had been for some time. Shani was trying to get Chakin to leave, "Why don't you at least go get some food," she said, "I'll look after her." Reluctantly Chakin stood and walked past me outside. I laid down and without being asked, I began to clean her fur. Shani was preparing a paste to put on her scratch. The herbs she put in it smelled strong. Datoni winced as Shani put them on her scratch, it must have stung. "Thank you," Shani said to me. I shrugged, "No problem." Then Shani gave Datoni some herbs to eat, and after awhile, she drifted off to sleep. "I've noticed that you and Ashton don't get along very well," she mentioned. I sighed and didn't answer. I was tired of everyone telling me I should be nicer to him. "He just wants to be accepted." "So do I," I replied. "Well, maybe if you had a better additude about things, and were open to change, it wouldn't be so hard." I glared at her, then stood abruptly and left the den. She shook her head as I padded away. I was told by Avree to put together a hunting patrol and I asked Shak, Chinuk Tanely, Kirada, and Cahkin to come with me. We padded silently in the woods with the Beta, Chinuk leading the way. We reached a clearing with a group or deer in it. Chinuk parted us into three groups. My group, consisting of me and Kirada, charged at the animal. Then Chakin and Shak jumped out and we cornered the doe as Chinuk and Tanely brought it down and killed it. We all helped to drag the deer back to camp and the pack ate well that night. Ashton After a few days of rest, my paw healed and everything was back to normal. Until Mykal came. We heard his howl one crisp clear night. It said 'I'm looking for a pack' He wandered up to our border and Avree allowed him to come to the camp. He seemed to be slightly younger than me, but equal in size and strength. Everything was fine for awhile, and I politely ignored him. One day there was a
