Ashton

I have been in Avree's pack for a month now. I have gotten to know just about everyone. There is Avree and Shani, the alpha male and female. Their pups, Shak, Datoni, and Brideon who were all two years old. Avree's brother, Chinuk and his mate Tanley are the beta male and female. They have pups who's names are Chakin and Kirada who are almost three years old. Also there's Aery, but She is not a part of either family. Then there is me, the omega. I will change that though, no matter what it takes.

Brideon and Datoni are still tripping over their own paws whenever they see me. It's kind of annoying really. I don't say anything though, it would be really mean just to say right out that I don't like them. I don't really know Kirada, but she seems nice. Chakin quickly became my best friend, he's fun to be around. Tanley and Chinuk go well together, I can see why they became mates. Avree still hangs out with his brother, and they mess around sometimes, despite their age. Shak just doesn't like me, I don't know why though. For some reason he thinks I'm trying to take advantage of his sisters, Brideon and Datoni, but of course I'm not. Aery pays me no mind, I don't think she even knows my name yet. She just calls me "Wolf," or "hey you!" It's rather irritating, the way she goes, strutting around like she's all that, but I have to admit, she's good at it.

Avree was putting together a scouting patrol. "Tanley, Chinuk, and Brideon. You all come with me," he said, "Aery please put together a hunting patrol."

Aery nodded and scanned the remaining wolves, " Chakin, Kirada, Shani, Shak, and Datoni. You all come with me."

"What about Ashton?" Chakin asked.

"There's no point in taking him, he's horrible at hunting," she said.

"Well he'll never get better unless you give him a chance," Chakin countered.

Aery sighed, "Fine," she said turning to me, "Come on wolf."

I frowned, "I have a name you know," I said. I followed the rest of the wolves along a trail that led to a herd of caribou.

We stopped a the edge of a clearing. In the clearing grazed a large herd of tasty looking caribou.

"Shani, Datoni, and Kirada," Aery whispered, "You be the chasers, uh, Ashton, you might as well be with them."

I glared at Aery, she had put me there on purpose, to humiliate me. I crouched with my group, ready to spring at any moment. Shani gave the signal, and we burst out of the tree line. I picked out and old buck and went after it. We herded it and started chasing it towards where the others waited. When the old buck saw the other group of wolves, it tried to wheel around and get away. The attackers where apon him then, nipping and biting at it's legs. Chakin dodged a kick from the buck and took a bite out of it's shoulder.

I watched in amazement as the pack all worked together to bring down the buck. I could learn from these wolves. I marveled at how easily they dodged the buck's hooves.

Aery jumped into the air, aiming for the creature's neck. Just then the buck whipped around and raised a hind leg, poised to kick. Without thinking I dove into the air and landed on the bucks back, I distracted it from Aery and it preceded to throw me in the dirt. I scrambled out of the way and watched as Chakin brought down the animal and Shak finished him off.

"That was really brave of you," Datoni said to me.

"Yah, you like, totally saved Aery's life!" said Brideon.

I smiled uncomfortably and slipped away from the two flirty females and padded up to Chakin. "They just won't give me a break!" I said to him.

"Well, you have to admit that was pretty sweet," Chakin said with his eyes glowing.

I just shrugged and said, "It was nothing."

Aery

Once we returned to camp it was afternoon. We howled so that the other pack members could come and join us in the meal. Avree ate first, along with his mate, then it was Chanuk and Tanely's turn. I waited until they were done then I ate my fill. I glanced at Ashton, he was squirming with impatience because he knew he would have to eat last. I just laughed and walked away. He deserved to eat last, if he kept making stupid mistakes like trying to ride a caribou, he would always eat last. As I padded by him he said,

"You're welcome."

I sniffed and said, "For what? Entertaining me by eating some dirt was rather funny, I have to admit."

Ashton growled and I padded away from him. I laid down in the shade of a pine tree and began cleaning my paws. Shak padded over to me and sat own. I paid him no mind.

"Would you like to take a walk with me?" He asked.

I looked up at him, the look in his eyes told me he didn't want to walk with me. "You sicken me Shak," I spat in his face.

I heard Ashton snicker and Shak turned on him. "You best keep your mouth shut you outsider!" He shouted at him.

Everyone grew silent and Shak stormed away. Ashton's eyes were wide, not knowing what to think.

After everyone finished eating they all laid down and had their separate conversations. I smiled as Kirada padded over to me and sat. "So what's up?" she asked.

I shrugged, "Nothin much. Can you believe Datoni and Brideon?"

"I know, they're like obsessed with Ashton."

"Yah, really, I think it's rediculous, as soon as a new guy comes, they're all lovey dovey."

Datoni and Brideon were prancing around Ashton, talking about something that I couldn't quite hear. I laughed at the site of Ashton, he looked miserable.

"I can kind of see why though," Kirada continued.

I had a discusted look on my face, "What?!" I exclaimed.

"He's really nice from what I've seen, what he did for you today was pretty brave, you should give him a chance."

I rolled my eyes and Kirada was called away by her father, Chinuk.

As the sun set and the moon rose, I thought about what she said. Slowly, one by one, the pack members began entering the den. Ashton padded past me and I said, "Hey I uh-"

He didn't stop walking, he paid no attention to me.

"Thank you," I said.

Ashton stopped and turned around with a bewildered look on his face, "What?"

"Thank you, for ... you know... saving my life," I couldn't believe what I was saying.

I small smile spread across his face, "You're welcome."

I rolled my eyes and said, "Don't get used to it," as I pushed passed him into the den.

Ashton

My eyes fluttered open and I stretched my legs out, my paws brushing up against something. In and instant Aery was in my face growling,"Just stay out of my way!" She spat. "Sorry, jeeze!" I mumbled, getting to my paws.  I padded out of the den and breathed in the crisp morning air. I closed my eyes and stretched my body to it's limit, feeling my muscles ripple beneath my pelt. I shook out my fur and opened my eyes to see Shak glaring at me.

"Stop showing of Ashton, I'm getting tired of it." he said.

"I wasn't showing off!" I shouted at him.

Shak's fur began rising, "I know you're up to something, and I'm not gonna let you get away with it!"

"Get away with WHAT?! You think I'm some no good wolf who's only here to take advantage of your sisters, well guess what, I'M NOT!"

Shak snapped, he pinned me to the ground instantly and was about to tear my throat out when Avree bounded over and pushed him off of me. "Enough of this nonsense!" He shouted. I stood and tucked my tail as Avree chided us out.

Chakin shot me a sympathetic look, I was horribly embarassed. Avree finished with, "Shak, since you started the fight, you'll have to stay here while the rest of us go hunting."

I almost couldn't stop myself from grinning, at least I had Avree on my side.

"And Ashton, you'll be staying with him, and you Aery are goingto stay here and make sure they don't get in a fight."

My stomach and Aery's jaw dropped at the same time.

"What did I do to deserve this?!" Aery said pleadingly.

Avree just walked away with the rest of the pack into the woods. Chakin glanced back at me, almost like he was going to turn back and stay with me, but then he was called back by his mother Tanely.

I flopped on the ground and looked at Aery, she was tearing at the grass furiously.

"It's not that bad," I said.

Aery turned and glared at me, "I'm stuck with you and him for the whole day, yes it is that bad!"

"Well maybe now you'll get the chance to learn my name," I said sweetly. I padded up to her and said, "I'm Ashton, pleased to meet you!"

Aery growled and batted my muzzle with her paw. "I know what your name is!"

"Oh what a surprise!"

"How is that a surprise? Everybody knows your name."

"Yah but not everyone uses it."

Aery rolled her eyes and padded away, she laid down in a patch of sunlight and looked all around her, but not at me. I don't know how long I studied her, trying to understand, but suddenly she said, "Stop staring, its impolite."

I jerked out of my trance and padded up to her.

"Why don't you like me?" I asked. "I mean, I guess Shak gets an excuse cause
