Mean while, Soba and Luna led the pack far and wide in search of their son when Juba said, “Soba have you ever thought that he might be dead? The pack is tired and who knows where Jakita is, for all we know he could surly be dead.”
Soba turned around and growled sharply at his brother, “How dare you say that, Jakita is alive, I know it!”
“You don’t know Soba! No one does! We have stayed loyal to you through thick and thin but this is outrageous! He could be dead! The pack shouldn’t suffer like this, their hungry, thirsty, tired, think of them!”
“I am Juba! It is not up to you to run my pack!”
“This is why I’m leaving your pack. I’m starting my own! Anyone who is threw with Soba’s rules follow me!” Juba said as he walked away from Soba.
Soba smirked as he thought no one would go, but indeed they did, half of the pack. Soba was just about to lunge at his brother when Luna said, “Soba let it go, we’ll find him, don’t worry we will. And we still have great numbers, the pack that is loyal to us is strong, we will survive.”
“No we won’t.”
Luna look at her mate in confusion, then Soba went on, “Look at you Luna; you’re all skin and bones! You haven’t eaten in days, same with everyone else, and it doesn’t help me to know that our un-born pups are probably dyeing all because of me, Jakita could be dead for all we know.”
“Don’t say that Soba! He’s alive I know he is, I can feel it!”
“Fine, I’ll go look for him, you and the rest of the pack must stay, find food, shelter, water, take care of Bandit and the our un-born pups.”
“I won’t go without you!”
“You have too! You’re close to death all because of me!”
“That doesn’t madder! If I had to die I’d rather die with you then anywhere else!” As Luna said this tears weld up in her eyes.
“My mind is made up, you and Bandit and the rest of the pack that is loyal to us stays, and if I don’t return, Yukon and you shall lead the pack in till Bandit is old enough to become alpha.”
“But dad!” Bandit shouted as tears rolled down his face
“I said my mind is made!” Soba snapped, then he kissed Luna and Bandit and nuzzled them, and said farewell to the pack.
Luna was about to run up to her mate when two other members of the pack held her back and whispered into her ear, “Don’t worry he’ll be okay.”
Jakita starts to cry, and then he gets up and walks into the den. He leans on the wall of the cave and stares outside at the dark night when he hears, “JAKITA! HERE BOY!”
Jakita’s ears perk up and he trots outside thinking to himself: they actually care about me?
Sara takes Jakita home and gets dinner ready for him and Tala. Tala then asks Jakita, “So you like dog food?”
“Dog food?” Just then Sara takes a can out of the cabinet and kneels down next to Jakita and Tala. She opens the can and tips it over Jakita’s bowl; the “food” slowly oozes out of the can and plops down into the bowl with a splash getting bits of food on Jakita. Then Jakita said, “You eat this stuff?”
“Yeah it’s good.” Tala says as she starts eating her food.
Jakita pushes it away with his paw and says, “I’ll just stick to eating elk.”
“Soot yourself.”
Weeks and weeks go on, Jakita never has the chance to hunt, every time he goes to the hunting grounds Sara calls for him and scares the herd away. He became extremely emaciated and they had to take him to the vet. And in the car to the vet Jakita passed out from a hunger deprivation (meaning foods been taken away). The vet put him on the table and examined him. “He’s just hungry, try giving him elk.”
Then Sara’s father said, “Elk? He’s a dog.”
“No he’s not, he’s a wolf, I thought you knew this?”
“A wolf has been living in our house for the past months! Get rid of that thing he doesn’t belong here! He could have hurt my daughter!”
“But sir he’s so calm and gentle.”
“Just get rid of him! Come on Sara let’s go!”
“But Dad!” Sara said
“No buts! I’ve made up my mind!”
“But Tala will miss him! And me too!”
“Then leave Tala here! I’m done with dogs! You can have a gold fish but NO DOGS!”
Sara started to cry and her dad pulled her out of the office. The vet shook his head and took Tala’s leash and put her in a cage and put Jakita in a cage too. Jakita was still passed out and extremely hungry but the vet did nothing! The vet did one kind thing by putting Jakita and Tala in cages next to each other. Then Tala whispered, “Jakita! Jakita! Wake up please! Don’t leave me! I’ve lost so much already, I love you I don’t want you to go!”
Tala cried herself to sleep that night as Jakita slowly drifted closer to the light.
