Part two coming soon...
BOOM! They heard it again and again, over and over. They bolted from the noise. They were brothers, as close as any brothers could get. And they were running from death.
It all started a while back when their pack had to move to a different den sight for the winter. Food was scarce so they ventured into the local towns to scavenge for their next meal. The town had very seldom people on the streets at night. The pack could smell food, and it was only a block away. They trotted around the corner; they saw a pile of meat next to the butcher shop. As hierarchy goes the alphas eat first. The members respectfully waited for their turn to indulge in the scraps. But, as the alphas grabbed a chunk of meat a net swung over them, they were trapped.
The pack bit and tore at the net to try and free their alphas. But it was no use; the net was bolted to the ground. The pack started to panic, what would they do without their alphas to guide them? Just then a figure appeared from the shadows. He aimed his gun at the leaders. The pack was outraged. They pounced on the man and knocked him to the ground and tore his arm. They weren’t going to kill him but just enough to send him running for the hills. It was just a small wound but he ran away screaming at the pack.
“I’ll get you one of these days, don’t even worry about that you stupid wolves!” the hunter shouted to the wolves.
They then ripped the net off the bolts and freed there leaders. They all grabbed all the meat they could carry and dashed into the woods, disappearing into the shadows. When they reached their winter den the pack burred their food for when they hungry later. They trotted into the large open mouthed den. Lying besides one another they waited for sleep to come.
The youngest of the pack were Jakita and Bandit. They were brothers that did everything together. They were inseparable. They were also the youngest of the pack. Jakita was ten months old and his brother, Bandit, was one year old.
The leaders of the pack decided that the pack should hunt some more food before the Caribou leave for better grazing fields.
“We must hunt, as the days are getting colder the fields are growing bare, the Caribou will need to leave to find more food soon. So we must stock up on food for this winter, this is going to be a long winter if I’m correct so we must hunt all we can before they leave.” The leader Soba wisely stated to his pack.
Soba told some wolves to pup-sit the brothers while the pack was on the hunt. Jakita watched as the pack sprinted after a herd of Caribou. Then one of the pup-sitters walked up to Bandit and Jakita, “Why don’t you two go have some fun, race each other or something. I don’t care as long as you’re away from me!” the pup-sitter, Juba snapped.
Juba and Soba were brothers. Juba would have been next alpha if Jakita and Bandit weren’t born. Juba wished they would just go far, far away so he could be the new leader when Soba passed on. Juba was always mean to the pups. He growls at them, nips them, and chases them away. But when Soba was walking by one day, he saw Juba’s rude behavior, and he banished Juba for one month. Juba never learned his lesson; he was still a bully to the pups.
The brothers run away from Juba. The pups raced each other down the hill, as Juba watched in approval.
“Bet I can beat ya’ down the hill.” Bandit challenged.
“You’re on!” Jakita replied.
They darted down the hill, dodging trees and hurtling bushes with ease. Jakita stopped and sniffed the air. Bandit looked at his brother in confusion. “What in the world are you doing?” Bandit questioned.
“I smell snow approaching, wait it’s a blizzard and it’s coming in fast. We better get home soon Bandit.” Jakita answered.
“Don’t worry we have time. Let’s just finish our race then go home, okay?” Bandit said.
“Fine.” Jakita mumbled. They ran and ran, tongues hanging out as they were panting so hard. The brothers came across the main road into town. As soon as the traffic let up Bandit bolted across the highway, but Jakita didn’t. He missed his chance to cross. “Come on Jakita. It’ll be okay, there just cars.” Bandit reassured.
Jakita finial wound up enough courage to run across the road. He dashed into the street. “Jakita look out!” his brother yelled.
The car slammed on the brakes and left skid marks in the newly made road. Jakita was down, blacked out from the impact. The owner of the vehicle rushed out and saw the young pup in the road, fur stained with blood. Bandit ran to his side. Jakita would not wake up, he would not move. Bandit growled at the human for what she had done to his brother. The blond headed woman knelt down and put her hand on Jakita’s heart. She could hear it beat. The human then called for rescue for the pup.
When Bandit heard the sirens speeding down the street he whispered into his brothers ear, “Please come back home when you’re well again, don’t forget about us. We will always love you.” Bandit dashed back into the darkness of the woods.
Jakita peeked open his eyes just a little crack, but he could still see. He saw a blurred vision, it was flashing red and white, and he thought he was dead. He saw smeared figures looking at him. They picked him up and put him on a stretcher. Then rolled him into the ambulance and drove away. Jakita tried to squirm away from the strange people and go back home. The humans strapped him in so he couldn’t move. They put needles in his arms and masks over his face. And within seconds, Jakita fell into a deep sleep.
