It was a warm spring day and Moki wandered the streets, looking for something interesting to do. As usual, she was being watched by many of the male dogs of Nome. She sighed. She loved the attention but sometimes she just wanted some peace from it all. She looked around, trying to locate some of her friends, or fangirls as she preferred to call them. They only stuck around her because she was popular.

''Mokiiiiii!'' a high-pitched voice squealed.

Moki turned, seeing one of these 'fangirls' trotting over to her. She was blonde and reddish-brown, a chinook and the daughter of Kaltag.

''Oh...hi, June.'' Moki said.

June smiled, her bright chestnut eyes sparkling.

''Wanna go to the beach?'' she asked, ''All the racedogs are going to be there. We can watch them train!''

Moki smiled at her out of politeness. June was very excitable about the male dogs. She shrugged.

''Why not?'' she said.

The two of them made their way to the beach. The other girls were already there. June ran up to them, squealing, when they arrived.

''Is he here?'' she asked, giggling.

Moki approached.

''Who?'' she asked.

''Steele and his son!'' another dog, Rosette, replied.

Rosette was a little Cocker Spaniel and Red Setter cross. She was born in England and still had the accent. Moki found it sweet, and liked Rosette the most of her friends.

''Steele? Wasn't he the former champion racedog?'' she asked.

June and Rosette, along with the other girls, nodded.

''He's been living in White Mountain for ages. He has kids our age. Ummm....Sheen, Jet and Starla, I think.'' one of the dogs said.

There was some squealing from other females down the beach. Moki, June and Rosette looked and saw a large black husky down the beach. he was with another dog, a black and reddish-brown husky crossbreed.

''It's them!''

Moki stared. The black husky ran down the beach, racing some of the other dogs. The crossbreed with him looked a lot like him, tho he was smaller and not built as big. Moki raised an eyebrow. They looked so stuck-up.

''Heh, I'll show them.'' a voice beside Moki said.

She looked over her shoulder at her brother, Kodi. She smirked.

''Go ahead.'' she said, ''I'd love to see the look on their faces when you beat them.''

''Oh, Kodi!'' June giggled, ''Hi!''

Kodi just nodded to her and rolled his eyes at Moki, who stifled a giggle. He stepped forward and approached Steele.

''Hey!'' he said.

The black dog looked up. His ice-blue eyes were hard.

''What?'' he said.

''Wanna race?'' Kodi asked.

The other black dog stepped up to him, a grin spreading across his face.

''You really think you can beat my father?'' he asked.

Kodi stared at him, his chocolate brown eyes boring into the other dogs light blue ones.

''Yeah, I think I can.'' he replied.

''Calm down, Jet.'' Steele said, voice low.

Moki jumped as her friends all gasped and stalking talking in quiet, but high voices.

''This is gonna be good.''

''What do you think will happen?''

''Whose going to win?''

''Kodi will!'' Moki announced, ''Besides my father he's the fastest dog in Nome.''

June nodded.

''True, true!'' she agreed.

''But Steele was a champion racedog before.'' one of the girls pointed out.

Moki stared at her until she blushed and turned away. They looked back to Kodi, Steele and Jet and saw that they were standing together. Jet sat a couple of metres away.

''Ready! Set! Go!'' he yelled.

Steele and Kodi took off, kicking sand behind them. Suddenly everyone was cheering for them. For the beginning, Kodi was in the lead but Steele suddenly had a burst of energy and overtook and Kodi, almost barging into him. Kodi slowed for a moment, nearly tripping, but then spd up. He was soon in a tie with Steele. The large tree, their finish line, was nearing.

''Come on, Kodi!'' Moki called.

They crossed the finish line, where another dog stood. He was light red and had light cream spots speckling his fur.

''Sheen?'' Steele said, staring at his son as he walked over.

He panted and stood straight when Kodi made his way over.

''Um it's a tie, father.'' Sheen said, slowly.

Steele growled and then turned and walked away. Moki and the other girls started towards them. As she passed, Moki caught Jet staring at her. For a moment, she even thought Steele was but when she stopped and turned he was sitting away. Some dogs crowded round Steele, others were talking to Kodi. Moki glared at Jet and stuck her nose in the air, walking over to her brother.

''So?'' she said.

''A tie.'' Kodi replied, catching his breath.

''Ah.'' Moki said, smiling, ''At least it proves you're good enough to almost beat the former champion.''

Kodi smiled and then laughed, looking at Steele. The older dog stared over at him, then looked right at Moki. The female stared back, her blue eyes shining. She didn't want him to think she was inferior. The male dog turned away abruptly, as Jet approached. He was soon taken away by June and the two fo them started talking.

''I'm going home.'' Moki yawned, seeing that June was busy. Rosette was with the others and Kodi looked ready to race again. She saw Dakota sitting with her team, who were talking to Sheen, but the rest of her sisters weren't around.

''Oh, uh, ok.'' Kodi said, ''See you later, sis.''

Moki nodded and left.

As she walked home, she thought it was weird how there weren't many dogs around the town now that Steele was said to be back. At least it was peaceful. As she thought this, Moki heard a noise behind her. She stopped in her tracks and her ear twizzled round to the sound. She turned her head as she heard it again and lowered her head, pressing her ears back.

''Whose there?'' she asked, her tone harsh.

A black, male dog appeared. He had patches of reddish-brown on his dark fur and his light blue eyes were watching her.

''What do you want?'' Moki snapped, bluntly.

She turned away, nose in the air, as she walked. Jet followed her.

''I saw you at the beach.'' he said, his voice silky smooth, ''You're not like the other females, are you? You're too good for them.''

Moki stopped and turned with a snarl.

''Mind your own business, mutt!'' she spat.

She felt odd using that word, considering she was a crossbreed herself, but she didn't care at this moment. Jet frowned a little.

''You're a fiesty one, aren't you?'' he grinned, walking to her side.

She growled at him but he continued smiling.

''I heard that the boiler room is a nice place to relax at night.'' Jet said, ''Maybe I'll see you there tonight.''

''In your dreams!'' Moki snapped, ''I'd rather go there with a wolf!''

With that, she turned away and left, tail curled tight and nose high. Jet stared after her, his mouth opening and closing as he tried to take it what had just happened.

Moki was rather moody when she returned home. Her boy, Jacob, seemed worried when she didn't get up when he petted her. His mother decided she was probably just tired. It was true, Moki was tired. Tired of greedy, big-headed males. She curled up and fell asleep.

She woken later on, hearing dogs outside. It was quite late at night and everyone in the house had gone to bed. Moki stood up and stretched, then looked outside. She saw the familiar shapes of June and Rosette, with a crowd of others. Rosette stopped and ran to Moki's house. She stopped running when she saw Moki at the window. She smiled and motioned to her to come outside. With a sigh, Moki jumped down from the window and walked out the dog-door.

''What's happening, Rose?'' she asked.

''We're all going to the boiler room to see Steele.'' she said.

Moki paused. What if Jet was there? Well, maybe if he saw her with her friends he wouldn't act the way he had before. She could ignore him anyway.

''You coming?'' Rosette asked.

Moki looked up. The little dog was already walking away.

''Uh, yeah, sure.'' Moki replied.

She walked with her friends to the boiler room. She was quiet the whole time but when they spoke to her she laughed and talked with them like normal. She had to make Jet see he couldn't get to her. When they arrived, it seemed as though there were loads of dogs around. Steele was lying on a blanket near the boiler. He had his sons, Jet and Sheen, sitting either side of him. A blue dog, who looked like a husky but with something strangely wild about her, was sitting close to Sheen. Steele kept glancing at her, his face stormy. Sheen's ears were folded back a little and he looked small whenever his father looked towards him and the female.

''Whose the girl?'' Moki asked.

''Oh, she's a friend of Sheen's.'' one of her friends said, ''She's part wolf.''

She stuck her nose in the air at this and looked at the blue wolfdog with disdain.

Moki chuckled and leant in close to the female dog.

''If you've forgotten,'' she said, darkly, ''I'm part wolf too.''

She female dog's eyes widened and she jumped.

''I-I-I'm so sorry, Moki!'' she stammered, ''I completely forgot!''

Moki stared at her down her nose before turning away. Just a fangirl. Steele was talking to some other dogs now, near him. Moki looked over and saw Jet staring at her. His eyes weren't as friendly as they were before. He turned away from her. June suddenly got up and made her way over to him. She began her flirting and Moki rolled her eyes. She was more interested in Steele. Her father and mother's stories always made him out to be a nasty, cheating snob. But he still seemed to have a lot of respect.

As the night came to a close and all the dogs were heading home, Moki decided to go on a walk. She saw June cuddling up to Jet. He looked rather proud of himself, but he looked over at Moki with a smug look and she wanted to slug him across the face. She rolled her eyes but knew she'd be safe to walk if June was taking up his time.

She walked across the beach, away from where her father's boat was and nearer the forest. She remembered playing here when she escaped from her parents. They were so mad when they found her. She chuckled at the thought. She heard a noise behind her, this
