i recall the rain pooring down and a blizzard was whipping up. the den gave us some protection but not much. we had the worst den in the pack ever since a new alpha came to power.

i can barely see, my eyes still sealed shut and my ears closed. but i have one advantage, i can smell. i smell my mother and my father as they try and protect us from the element raging outside. my all ready shut eyes fall into a deep sleep and i am at peace

                     *~~~*

i awake in the middle of the night, tossing and turning. my little sister is still fast asleep. i have woken up because i have senced something is wrong. something is not right. but what? i can not hear. nor can i see. all i can do is smell. but i am so sure something is wrong. i know my eyes and ears aren't suppose to open for another few months but i force them to work. i pant and whimper. and then, a new world has opened up to me.

this world is beautiful in witch i live in. it is much bigger than i thought. so many new things to explore. so many new sounds. the birds singing, frogs croaking, a raindrop falling into a river. but then something strikes my mind, something is not right. i turn my head and face my father, he's fast asleep just as my sister. then i look at my mother, she's fast asleep also. but somethings not right. her fur is so cold. she is like a cube of ice, it make's me wince. her large wolf paws i once new, now, they have turned into a light shade of purple.

i yip and yelp and whine to wake my father up. suddenly he awakes and jumps to his paws as if he could sence that something was wrong just as i did. he ran over to me, as i, scared sencless, yelped for help. i nudged mother to try and tell him what was wrong. he looked at her. and suddenly knew what was wrong. tears rolled down his fur and he fell to the ground beside her. he buried his face in her cold icy fur. and then i knew what has become of my mother...she had died.

                                                      *~~~*

i cryed and cryed as a new day broke across the sky. for i new, as did all in the pack, what happened to those who died. the alpha padded across the den site. and he walked straight up to our den. he stood tall in front of our dad and i could over hear him saying, "well, where is she?"

father sighed and led the alpha into our home. i still not able to move just lied down in the corner of the den but i could hear and see everything that was going on, most pups could only dream of the advantages i have. but it was nothing to me now. i felt as if my heart had been ripped in two.

the alpha's body gauds then picked up mother and put her on their backs. and away they went. where they went? no one shall know.

days go by and i am almost three months old. i over heard dad talking to a friend, he said that when we were eleven months old we are leaving this pack and never coming back.

he tried to buriy the pain deep down inside him. i know it wont work though. everyone goes through lose in different ways. but mine is no better either. i have no one to talk to. my sister is still too young and probley wont even remember any of this, but i will, and i always will.

i know what the alpha does with the sick and elderly of the pack once they have died. my ears are now like bats ears, i can hear extremely well. they traveled far and wide, across meadows and valleys to a large cliff. the cliff must have been at least fifty feet deep, and in width, i can't say, but it ran for miles and miles cutting into the Earth as if it were nothing. and you know what they did? tossed her over! like she was a piece of garbage! back at the den when that happened i was growling and snarling and everyone thought i was going crazy because they couldn't hear what was happing many miles away.

                                                          *~~~*

months went by. winter turns to spring. spring turns to summer. finally, i am eleven months. time to leave. start a new. but we are held up. my sister has the same illness my mother had. i don't want to lose her too. then my heart shall be gone, and with my heart goes my spirit. i shall be nothing left, moping around all day, not to have the will to live.

but i know my sister, and she is a fighter. always has been. she will make it...i hope.

we must wait in till she heals, but till then my dad scoops me up and sets me down on his back. we walk out of the den, good. we need some fresh air, a change of senerary, something new instead of a boring old den all day and night. i playfully bark and he speeds up his pace. i feel the wind blow through my fur and hit my face as it trys to keep us back. we push forward, i lead the way. bolting through the trees at top speed, i live for speed. but then, all of a sudden we skid to a stop. i can hear Cailley! she's crying.

i nearly fall off my father before he turns on his heel and dashes back home. we have a long way to go, many miles. but we can make it. but I'm not sure about dad. he's starting to pant and gasp for air. the air here is dusty and has smoke in it. we took a short cut and ran into a town. cars zoom by us and people honk. people yell and throw cans and glass bottles at us. what did we do wrong?

finally out of the town! the air is clean and we both take a deep breath. i look back at the town and see a sign that says 'NOME'

it seems like its hours before we get home and when we do it is too late. the alpha is there with his body gauds. they pick my little sister up and start to walk out of the den when my father says to them, "wait, please give her another day. she might just be sick."

"very well, but in twenty four hours exactly we shall be over to take her away if she does not improve."

"OK thank you alpha."

the alpha nods and walks away, and so does his two body gauds.

dad takes Cailley and sets her down in the den. he asks me if i can go out and get some food. i freeze in my tracks. how am i, am eleven month old pup going to be able to feed my family? how do i hunt anyway? what do i hunt? all questions, and no answers. dad was suppose to teach my sister and i how to hunt but with they lose of my mother and with my sister ill he had no time.

and so he must have been in shock from all that has happened and asked me to take care of everyone. he looks up at me, his eyes filled with misery and dispare. thinks that there is no hope left, that he has lost everything. and so with that off i go, on my first hunt.

                                                          *~~~*

i travel far away from the den into a think wood. trees all around me, the grass is up to my shoulders. well of course I'm still a pup so a lot of things are up to my shoulders.

i pad down a small path winding deeper and deeper into the woods. when i reach a small elk herd. i sigh and say to myself, "how am i suppose to kill an elk five times my size?"

"i shall help you young one, together we are strong." a wolf said from behind me in the darkness of the forest.

i turn and face the wolf, i duck low into the tall grass in hope that the wolf won't see me. then i shiver and say, "w-w-w-who are you?"

"i am Anui. and how are you?"

"my name is Brooke."

"nice to meet you. now, shall i teach you?"

"yes please." i say as a smile shines across my face.

"good, off we go then."

we trot into the field and hide in the bushes next to the elk. Anui the whispers to me, "go for the bulk, it will give your family plenty of food."

"how am i going to hunt him though? he's huge!"

"echo me child."

i bay and echo her.

i copy her from the simpiles glide of her paw over the dirt to the twitch of her tail. it is a mirror affect, perfectly in step. we surround the herd, single out the bulk, and bolt in for the kill. i manage to keep up with Anui's fast beet gait. she lunges, i lunge, we go for the neck. of course i can't bring down the kill i mearly give it a small wound, no bigger than a small leaf. but Anui, she brings down the whole kill with ease, as if it were nothing. I'm about to thank her but when i turn around she is gone. i eye the elk and nip off a chunk and happily trot home.

I pad into the den and slide the meat across the den floor over to my dad as I am beaming with joy from my first hunt. my father smiles and nods and picks up the meat. he feeds it to my sister but she doesn't eat
