Flashback

it was dark, damp, and cold. he was all alone. he sat in the far back corner of his cadge. never to have anyone to guide him. he was still too young to understand, but he knew in his heart that they were never really gone...................

 

                                           Back to Reality

he lie down in the back of his cadge. Axel perked his ears and saw someone coming, maybe this was going to be his new owner, who would bring him to his forever home. the man walked up to Joe, the owner of the kennel, and said, "how much is he?"

 

"five grand." Joe responded

 

"WHAT! that much for this mutt?!?" the man shouted and he stomped out of the kennel.

 

Joe sighed and walked into his office. and when he came back he was holding a sign. Axel had been in the kennel for many months now, so out of complet boardom he learned how to read. he looked at the sign on his cadge and it said: if not found a home tomorrow, will be put to sleep.

 

 

Axel dashed outside onto the muddy field and ran up to five foot high barb wire fence. Axel gulped and looked around for something to help him get over the fence. perfect! Axel saw a shipment of cargo boxes in front of the fence and rushed over to them. he could never jump the fence before, because he was too young but today he felt if he didn't make it, he would die in the kennel. but if he didn't clear the fence and landed on the barb wire he would die too. so at least he would try to escape rather than just give up his whole life.

 

he climbed the boxes but found out that since they were so close to the fence there would be no way of jumping straight up in the air. he would need a running start. Axel jumped off the boxes and walked over to the edge of the field. just then Axel heard, 'Axel what are you doing?!? get back here!' it was Joe. but Axel didn't stop, he bolted to the fence. leaped in the air and tumbled to the ground on the other side. he made it! he cleared the fence! Axel stood up and looked at Joe who just said, 'who cares anymore, you'll die out there Axel! at least you'll die peacefully in here.'

 

he just got a little scratch from the barb wire on his paw but other than that be was fine. Axel turned away from Joe.he ignored him and started running away from the kennel.  Axel ran for days in till he reached a little town called Nome.

 

Axel walked into town and trotted over to a dark alley and there he made his home. a little dug out. and inside was a dog bed made with old rags and a popped blow up toy. it wasn't much, but to Axel it was home.

 

                                           *MONTHS LATER*

 

'get 'em boys!' Steele shouted as they started to charge at Axel. Axel turned around and saw what they were doing.

 

'oh great not again.' Axel whispered to himself as he bolted down the alleys looking for an exit. Steele and his gang picked on him 24/7 so he should have known to take the alley closest to the food store. but he was in a daze and took the wrong path. he zoomed down the alley, skidding to a stop. he growled to himself, 'dead end. stupid, stupid, stupid, now I'm in trouble.'

 

Steele and his gang rounded the corner and another dog on the sled team said, 'we got 'em now Steele!'

 

'you betcha!' Steele scoffed

 

Axel duck his head down and his ears press so tight against his head they looked as if they were going to brake right threw his skull.

 

all Axel herd was a SNAP and everything went black. he broke a rib. eventually Steele and his gang got tired and left Axel's unconsous body in the dark alley to die. but Axel was a fighter, well...not on the outside, he was strong and wouldn't give up. he knew that one day he would soon be reworded.

 

in a few days Axel woke up and within a month or two he was healed thanks to the help of his good friend Balto. Axel now stuck to the back alleys away from where Steele and his gang liked to hang out. he looked up at the sky and saw that night was near. he trotted down the alleys into a dug out he made. he squeezed himself through the dug out opening and walked lazily to his dog bed made out of old rags and a popped blow up toy. he jumped into his bed and fell fast asleep.

 

'hey Axel! Axel! you awake?' Balto asked as he stood in front of the dug out.

 

'i am now. what do you need Balto?' Axel said

 

'come here i want you to meet someone.' Balto said

 

'coming.' Axel responded as he squeezed himself out of his dug out and sat next to Balto and said, 'who is it?'

 

'come on she's over here?'

 

Axel whispered to himself, 'she?'

 

'yup. you'll love her. she so nice.'

 

'Balto you know i don't need you to help me with my love life.'

 

'i know, but come on she's over there.'

 

'but what do i say to her?'

 

'i don't know. say something, anything. talk about the weather, i don't know. good luck. oh and invite her to the spring party.'

 

'there's a spring party? what else are you not telling me?!?'

 

'oh lighten up.'

 

before Axel could argue any longer Balto gently pushed him in front of the girl. Axel got nervous and blushed. he then said, 'um...hi, my name is Axel. who are you?'

 

'I'm Ginger, nice to meet you Axel.'

 

'nice to meet you too Ginger.'

 

'well...i was wondering, since I'm new to town and all, can you give me a tour?'

 

'sure! um...i mean, sure i would love to.'

 

'I'll see you at your house tomorrow morning. where do you live anyway?'

 

'you see that house over there?'

 

'yeah.'

 

'well i live right under it.'

 

'oh...OK. see ya later then. bye.'

 

'bye.'

 

Axel trotted over to Balto and sat down. then Balto asked, 'so...how'd it go?'

 

'great!'

 

                                   *THE NEXT MORNING*

 

Axel sat in front of his dug out waiting for Ginger to come. just then a full groomed dog walked up to him. Ginger smiled and said, 'ready?'

 

'yup. lets go.'

 

Axel lead her all over town except the front of town because Steele and his gang always hangs out there and Axel didn't want Ginger to see him get beat up. that would be so embarrassing! then Ginger asked, 'can i see the front of town now? i mean not like dark back alleys aren't cool and all, but...'

 

'um...OK if you want'

 

'thanks.'

 

they trotted into town and Axel held his head low. then Ginger looked at him and laughed, 'what are you doing Axel?'

 

'nothing.' and Axel pulled his head up with a smirk on his face to hide the pain he was feeling outside. what if Steele started beating him up in front of Ginger and she thought he was a wimp?

 

and just as if on cue, 'hey its Axel, just the dog i wanted to see.'

 

'leave me alone Steele.'

 

'oh don't worry were not going to hurt you.'

 

'your not?'

 

'no of course not. were going hurt your little girlfriend!.' Steele and his gang started laughing as the pinned Ginger down and started scratching at her and bitting her.

 

Ginger beg for them to let her go but they didn't stop beating her up. then Axel's hackles rose and he snarled. you would have sworn he was a wolf. Axel then said threw a growl, 'let her go!'

 

Steele said without turning around to look at Axel, 'why should we?'

 

then Steele turned around to laugh at Axel when he noticed he wasn't crying or begging. he was standing up for himself, he never did that. Steele thought Axel was going to rip him up to shreds. Steele then said to his gang, 'come on guys, were just wasting our time with this mutt.'

 

'but I'm a pure bred, same as you!'

 

'yeah but your a German Shepherd. were all Malamutes. German Shepherds don't belong in Alaska!'

 

'yyyyyyeah, no Gerrrrrrrrman Shepppppppperdsssss alloweddddd!' Star said

 

'can it Star!' Kaltag replied while hitting Star on the top of his head

 

Axel couldn't take it any more! he lunged at Steele. bitting his throat. Steele yelped in pain and swat Axel away from him. Axel didn't want to kill him, just give him a small wound. a taste of his own medicine. Steele and his gang ran away in shock.

 

Axel then turned towards Ginger and asked her, 'are you all right Ginger?'

 

'never better.' and Ginger nuzzled Axel.

 

Axel blushed and said, 'well...i was wondering, would you like to go to the annual spring party with me? i mean, it doesn't have to be a date if you don't want. but if you want me to take you there.'

 

'i would be honored.'

 

                                         *BEFORE THE PARTY*

 

Axel squeezed out of his house and trotted over to Ginger's house. Axel scratched at the door. the door
