Oh, i have a bad feeling about this. Mel said as Balto went into the hospital to be checked by the vet. when DON'T you have a bad feeling? all the other dogs answered dramatically. Jenna was worried, though. Balto had been feeling horrible, though he didn't say anything, she could tell. After all, they had been mates for five years now, and he was seven years old. everyone was in the boiler room, trying to keep their minds off balto, but it was impossible to do. then they heard the hospital door close and Duke say "So there isn't anything you can do?" "I'm afraid not, Duke." "Well, i won't let him suffer. How's Friday?" "Alright,Duke; If you're sure." "yes." Then they all see Duke bend down and pat Balto. "Go on boy. you're free." Then Balto walks slowly toward them. "What's wrong, Balto?" they all ask. "Besides the fact that i've got cancer, and Duke's going to put me down Friday? Nothing" he says flatly. "NOOOOOOO!" Jenna gasps, horrified. Kodi, on the other hand, just stares blankly at his father. "Kodiac? Son, are you alright?" Balto says. About a minute later Kodiac looks his dad right in the eye and shouts "I HATE YOU! you can't die! I NEED you! OF ALL THE FATHERS IN THE WORLD, I GOT STUCK WITH ONE WHO JUST UP AND DIES WHEN I NEED HIM THE MOST!" then Kodi turns up runs, with Balto just staring at his son getting farther away from him. "Well," he says at last, "that went well." For the rest of the night, Balto and Jenna cry in the boiler room, while Kodi cries with Dusty.Jenna and Balto sob quietly, but Kodi vents to Dusty: "I didn't mean to say that! it just scared me so much. Do you think he will forgive me?" "Oh,Kodi, I know he will. He knows you didn't mean to say all that." The next day, while everyone else was asleep, Balto left Jenna and went to where Kodi and Dusty lived. "Psst!Psst! Kodi! you in there?" Balto whispers. Then there's some yawning, and then, Kodi appears, sleepy, though he's wide awake when he sees who it is. "Dad? Er...about yesterday..." "You didn't mean it? yeah, i know." Balto smiles at his son. "Come on, i want to show you something." So, Kodi follows his father into the boiler room, and Balto goes into the vent system(the very same one back in 1925, when Jenna learned what was wrong with Rosy) and then he shows him the northern lights trick "WOW,DAD! amazing!" Balto laughed,"Now anytime you miss me, you can look at the northern lights and remember me." he smiles. Then balto goes to Duke's and spends the rest of the day there at home. On Friday, Duke gives Balto a huge chunk of meat to eat, and pats him gently. "Poor boy,i hate to have to do that to you tomorrow morning, but i don't want to see you in pain." Balto understood that. "Well, boy, i hope you enjoy your last day here." Duke smiled sadly, and as soon as Balto ate he ran out the door. He went to Jenna's, but she wasn't there.he went to every house in Nome that owned a dog, but no dogs could be found. Maybe the boiler room? Balto thought to himself. The second he entered the boiler room, everyone yelled "SURPRISE!! We'll miss you,Balto!" Balto looked around and grinned. "Gee, you all didn't have to do this,but thanks." All the dogs grin at him. "well, we couldn't just let you go without a goodbye, now, could we? Not after all you've done for us!" "Well, what are we all sitting around for? let's party!" "YEAH, THAT'S THE BALTO I KNOW" everyone shouted. They had been having a great time, but all of a sudden, Jenna started to cry. She didn't make a sound, but Balto turned from talking to Kaltag, and went to her quickly. "Jenna, what's wrong?" "Nothing's wrong." "mmhm.. the truth,please." "I'll never see you again! We were getting into the best part of our lives together, and...and... and now you're going to DIE!" You won't be here again!" Balto took a deep breath and sighed, and then began to sing "i will always be with you, makes no difference where your road takes you to.even if we're apart, now we're joined at the heart. though our moments may be gone, you and i will still live on.i will always be with you,i'll be by your side,whatever you do, other memories may fade,but the ones that we've made, are eternal as the stars,now i'm part of  who you are.and i'll be there with you, in the sound of your laughter,i'll be in  the tears you cry..." Everyone is astonished at his singing. "Where did you learn to sing like that?" Dusty asks. "My..my mother used to sing to us,i guess thats where i learned." later, everyone says goodnight, and the next day Balto is told that he will NOT be put to sleep, after all( the doctor had gone over Balto's tests again, because he just didn't want to put Balto to sleep without making sure.)
