Finally, i wanted to say that i will NOT stop putting cliff hangers in my stories! I like to torture you! Mwa ha ha! I am evil. =) SO NOW, BALTO VS. NOME PART 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Balto stared in fear up at the black and white wolf on top of the rock, looking down at him. It's eyes were sparkling green in the moonlight and it finally climbed down. Balto whipped around as two more wolves leapt out of the bushes behind him. He was trapped.
"I want no trouble!" He called out to the wolves. "If this is your territory, i will leave. I'm sorry for tresspassing."
"You are a lone wolf?" A red and gray she-wolf said behind him. "I thought you were a dog with that human scent all over you. Then you would have been in serioue trouble."
"Well i..." Balto began, but the black and white wolf snapped it's jaws.
"Silence Vitwany! Any animal could see he looks nothing like a dog! You have disgraced him!" The wolf snapped.
"They don't know i'm part dog. I guess that's a good thing considering they don't like dogs." Balto thought.
"I apologize stranger." Vitwany said. The last wolf, a pure white female looked at Balto.
"Who are you anyway and why are you in out territory?" She snarled, crouching down as if preparing for an attack.
"My name is Balto. I'm, uh a lone wolf. I did not no i was tresspassing." Balto bowed his head in respect to the black and white wolf.
"Oreo, i think he's telling the truth." Vitwany said, walking up to Balto and sniffing him. "But why do you smell of human?"
"Because i uh, robbed one of their meat sheds. The human found me and chased me out." Balto backed away from Vitwany. Though she was acting nice. local legends and stories from his home had taught him to be wary of what he said to them. Oreo laughed.
"You must be new around here Balto. Any wolf, even a loner, knows not to rob the humans unless a pack stands by you. The humans have dogs. And though we can easily tear their thoats out," Balto gulped. "why waste out energy on such usefull crimes?"
"Right. I will remember that." Balto said. "I will just go now." The white wolf snarled again.
"I don't think so! You are tresspassing! You must be taken to Mage! He'll know what to do with you!" The wolf sprang at him and Balto closed his eyes ready for an attack, but it didn't come. The white wolf landed next to him and shoved him with her shoulder, obvisouly telling him to come with her.
"I apologize for Shasta's behaviour." Oreo growled as the four began to walk. "She doesn't like intruders." Shasta growled and said nothing; just continued walking, looking back every so often as if to make sure Balto wasn't going anywhere.
"I am Vitwany and this is my mate Oreo." Vitwany bouned up to Balto. "I am a little softer with tresspassers."
"Which will be your death one day!" Shasta snarled. Vitwany ignored her.
"So why do you guys hate dogs anyway?" Balto asked. "Did they kill one of your kind or something?"
"Were you not told the stories when you were a pup?" Oreo asked, suddenly looking supisious. Balto immediatly reliazed his mistake and thought fast.
"Yes! I mean, no i wasn't. I was born a lone wolf and both my parents died. I have been on my own for most my life." Balto said. Oreo's look softened and Balto silently thanked whoever could hear it that he had found some temperary friends.
"Well, legen goes that there used to be no dogs. Only wolves. We were a feared race, always the hunters and never the hunted. Running free and hunting in packs. It was a good time to live. Some go as far to say that even the bears and wild cats feared our teeth! We had only one true enemy back then. Man. Man had come and taken out lands, driven out or killed all of our food and they even dare to slay us and wear our pelts to keep warm in the harsh winters! Well, some wolves decided that it was better to run with man and protect man! One wolf, Rowan, had gone to spy on man once, taking a small team of wolves. Unknown to us, Rowan and his team had planned to join man! Many months later, Rowan had come back. But he was a disgrace by then! His eyes no longer had the fierce wild in them! And worse, he tried to tell us that man was right! It was better to live with man! We drove him out for his disgrace, not having the heart to kill one of our own. Well, Rowan mated with a female and the race of dogs was born. Then the injustice began. Humans started using dogs to hunt wolves! The very species that dogs had come from was now being killed by them! So we became the hunted. And that is how we live today."
Vitwany finished her story and Oreo growled. "If i ever see a dog, i remember that line 'we became the hunted!' I will not stand for it! I will kill any dog i find!"
"So, that was so long ago was it not? Do you think it is time to over look the past?" Balto asked. Immediatly he regretted his words. Though minutes ago she had been happily talking to Balto, Vitwany now growled so deeply the hairs on Balto's neck stood straight up.
"Dare you speak of forgivness Balto?" Vitwany snarled. "Are you not a wolf? Do you not have wolf blood running though your veins? Do you not run free? We do not forgive those who hunt us! We do not forgive those who make our pups starve and our name stained with blood!"
"What of wolfdogs?" Balto asked gathering courage that he knew he would later regret.
"Any wolf who mated with a dog and had a pup does not care enough to know that it's pup would NEVER be accepted into a real pack of wolves and would be driven out by dogs! A disgrace!" Vitwany snarled again.
"We are at our den site." Shasta suddenly said and Vitwany once again became the happy and nice wolf that Balto had first met. Balto gasped as they walked though some bushes and suddenly, six or more other wolves were surrounding him. Pups and adults alike, all staring.
"I will take you to Mage's den. He is our leader. We are the Pack of the White Mountain." As Vitwany walked away with Balto, she began to explain the layout of where everything was in the pack, ignoring the looks the other wolves gave her.
"Over there is the birthing den where she-wolves give birth, though the pups sleep with the pack. Protecting the future is more important than ever in a pack. There is the food pile. We store birds and rabbits there when the caribu have gone. "
Balto drank in all the information as he walked toward a large cave where he could see many wolves inside sleeping together. A large musculer gray wolf stood outside. He growled as they approached.
"I wish to see Mage." Vitwany said. "Oreo, Shasta and I captured a tresspasser while patrolling the borders."
"Mage sees no one right now!" The wolf growled. "He is out hunting."
"By the looks of it, he is back." Vitwany said, sniffing the air and turning toward the entrance to the den site. Balto turned and saw a large brown wolf running toward him with three more following him.
"Vitwany. I heard you wanted to see me. To what do i owe the pleasure?" Mage asked, ignoring Balto.
"I brought a tresspasser." Vitwany bowed to Mage as the brown wolf turned to Balto.
"And does the tresspasser have a name?"
"Balto." Balto spoke sharply. For some strange reason, he felt a dislike toward Mage. He would have to watch him.
"And why are you in my territory?" Mage suddenly snarled. Balto was taken aback by his sudden change in attitude.
"I mean no harm. I did not know this was your territory." Balto said. Mage glared at Balto then turned to the gray wolf in front of the cave.
"Take our guest to the log where we keep priseners. Give him no food until i get a chance to speak with him properly." The gray wolf nodded and shoved Balto to a large fallen tree.
"Sit." The gray wolf ordered and balto sat.
"I'm in some real trouble now!" He thought bitterly. "Of all my luck, a wolf pack! A wolf pack! And Mage, i don't know why but i feel there is more to him than meets the eye! Oh i hope Jenna and Star have convinced the dogs to let me come home!"
"The dogs!" Balto said outloud.
"What?" The gray
