Mel Balto Source Collab

Mel Balto Source Collab

Here is my WIP of Mel so far. I do feel his head is too big though :/

A critique would be most welcome.

You might want to fix : The nose, tail, and paws. (it seems you tried several styles of drawing paws, it creates confusion as it makes some of the paws look deformed in comparison) Also, the mail tag is also distorted, the lines inside it.

I have to say, this is good. I can literally see at least a fraction of the work you put into it, especially the face. Nice work!

O' Cap'n My Cap'n!
Thanks, Cat -- that was helpful to have an experienced fan artist's input.

Yeah, Wikipedia is fine for basic stuff. But for simple answers like what was needed here, as you inferred, it's more than enough. Especially if one references a page that isn't loaded with "multiple issues".

And see, that's what I was thinking about Mel's breed. That the production team likely went with the obvious of two breed choices. But then, structurally, if one were to consider it from a fan perspective, and not strictly according to our assumptions of canon (because it was never announced by Universal as far as I know), Mel is probably a Welsh Terrier.

Okay, a few things, off topic and on.

1) Critique is not flaming.

2) If you can't take critique, don't publicize your stuff.

3) If you're going to get sore at someone critiqueing work that ISN'T YOURS, shut your mouth and move on with your life.

4) Wikipedia is fine for BASIC research, like for renders. Not EXTENSIVE research. Like what's not even happening on this site at any point in time ever.

5) The head is not too big, Mel is really just an oddly designed character.

6) Mel is an Airedale Terrier. Not a good representation of one. But he is an Airedale Terrier. AT's are brown, on the larger side of medium-sized, and have their tails cropped longer than most other breeds. Schnauzers range from white, black, and various greys. Really only breeds mixed with Schnauzers are brown.

You aren't off-topic, Star. But thanks. Though I really can't take credit for the pose, I drew this from a screenshot. Lastly, this drawing isn't old, but it isn't the most recent either. At that time I felt the head was too big, but looking at it now it seems fine.

Not to be off topic, but I like the way you drew Mel, Mighty! Even if the head is a bit too big.
(Actually, I didn't really notice the head was too big at first.)

Alasken - not Schnauzer. Not with those markings. See my comment below.

And did you ask me, if I knew? Apparently not, "No one knows for sure" possibly, Schnauzer. Yep Jc could have your answer two.

Given the perspective here, I'd say the head size is fine. As to his breed, there are only two options (given the markings and physical structure):

1. Airdale Terrier: very possible because this, of the two possibilities, is the only generally-familiar breed. The production team would likely have chosen an obvious and well-known breed, not an obscure one. Though Mel is far too short for an Airdale. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airdale_Terrier

2. Welsh Terrier: marked and structured EXACTLY like an Airdale, but shorter in stature (essentially a miniature Airdale). Far more reasonable a breed possibility (which I've mentioned in the past), but a practically unknown breed by the general lay public. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welsh_Terrier
