Balto and Jenna redesigned

Balto and Jenna redesigned

I have many issues with the design choices of certain characters in the first Balto movie. Balto himself being one of them. Aside from his yellow eyes, there was no indication what breed he was. He didn't look like a wolf, and comparing him to the rest of the huskies in the movie, he didn't look husky either. He just looked like a brown mutt. I mean for crying out loud, they had to keep REMINDING us he was "part wolf" in order to give verbal signification why they hated him. Stupid.

In my design, he's a comfortable middle. Keeping markings and colorations and of a husky, eyes, manginess and build of a wolf. My version of the movie's Balto remains his playful self as seen in the first part of the movie (this version is not my version of how I'd change the movie. This is just how I'd change his design).

As for Jenna, I gave her a sturdier build, giving her fluff and muscles in the right places, and making her coloration more realistic, albiet exaggerated. Gave her simplified mroe more husky-like markings. In my version, Jenna races to be on Steele's team to try and help Rosie herself. She gets on the team, and when Steele steps down, she takes matters into her own paws until Balto comes along to assist.

Nyx > Eh, haven't decided. But it shouldn't be too hard to do both at the same time.

I think I remember you redesigned Dusty a while ago. Can't wait to see how you draw her and her new design! Will the new Aleu and Kodi designs be based on their parent's new designs? Or are you just gonna do it based off the original Balto and Jenna, but with your own twist? Lol can't wait to see your Kirby too

Nyx > I may do Aleu and Kodi, maybe Dusty and Kirby, but I'm not gonna touch Steele, Kaltag, Star or Nikki cuz I actually like their designs xD

I do prefer Balto's redesign to Jenna's. All that white is a nice touch. ;)

Wow, I'm imagining the movie with these designs. Crap, that would've been an interesting movie to watch :D I love how you gave Jenna a more important role. Are you going to be doing any more redeigns?

Well said. (Jenna does look rather pink, contrast on my laptop is a bit intense, so maybe it is just me)
Anyway, I do like your new style. I myself prefer more of a realistic look, but that's just me. I have nothing against cartoony styles, in fact I admire them.
But after reading your comment it does make sense out of some of the stylistic choices. I do like the contrast you added to them. The sizes of Balto and Jenna didn't make any sense XD especially since Jenna was supposed to be this small feminine husky.
And yeah, I could tell the hint of A&O on Balto's design. I used to love that movie, so I hunted down a great bit of concept sketches, they're really beautiful.

thanks for the long explanation!

Alpha > you ought to check your color settings on your computer cuz she's definitely a light vermillion xD I picked these designs for a reason, not for your tastes or really for anyone's tastes but my own. You're not the first one who dislikes my "new style" for drawing dogs but it calls for them to be exaggerated to get character traits across without saying anything about them. Don't like the exaggerated look? That's fine cuz it's for people who appreciate it. Balto is skinnier because unlike Jenna in the movie, he is malnourished, alongside scruffy and mangy. I did take SOME inspiration from A&O but mainly from well-drawn fan art of the characters since the movie itself looks terrible. Jenna looks poofy without the need to add the unnecessary scruff lines. Trying to get the point across that she is well-groomed before joining Steele's team later on in her story. Not trying to persuade you to like my style, but there is reason for everything I did, and I didn't make the decisions for the sake of changing them, but so it suits MY style, and makes sense for the characters themselves.

I'm not certain what the thought process of balto and Jenna's original designs were, but I do think that concept art provided a MUCH better choice for them than the final product. Making balto two similar shades of the same brown added nothing to his qualities, and really neither did making Jenna obnoxiously skinny compared to the rest of her fellow huskies. The only reason I think they even went with the red they chose was because "red looks great against snow". And it does. But we barely even see her in a flattering setting where we can admire that style choice. I also couldn't stand that they were basically the same size and build, unintentionally following the Smurfette Principle and giving Male Protagonist a love interest that's basically a female version of himself.

Not bad, but the colors on Jenna are a bit to pink-ish for my taste. I for one think they overdid the colors in the movie, but these aren't much of an improvement to be honest. However, her build is much much better, but now it's now Jenna who is a toothpick, it's Balto, which is also a bit, well weird. Balto also reminds me of Humphrey from A&O XD Jenna Also reminds me a bit of a rabbit lol
Now for the positives!
Balto looks much more like a wolf/husky (not to mention the original Balto in a sense). Jenna's build is 10x better. I really like the smooth lines for her paws and body, but I would have liked to see a bit more fluff on her neck and tail. Other than that, a huge improvement on her build. Balto's build a bit bit to exaggerated for my taste. I think for Balto's build, the animators found a pleasing balance between mangy wolfdog and full grown husky. The one main thing I disagree with on Jenna, is her coloration is very, very pink. As you know, red huskies are more of a cross between brown and an orange-ish red. I'm not found of when they're made out to be pink. They most certainly, are not. I'm aware it's an animated style thing to make her look more feminine without the skinny build, but I think this build brings out her femininity just fine without being over exaggerated. I hae no comments on the plain artistic aspect of this, your amazing as always :3 Anyway, just my opinions. There is a lot I like about these designs, good job cat!
