Balto: A True Hero

Balto: A True Hero

Well, this originally was going to be a serious drawing, but I got impatient and it turned into more of a sketch/doodle.

My main intention of this drawing was to prove that MSPaint is just as good as Photoshop or Sai. It gets really annoying whenever people say that they are limited with their drawing abilities because all they have is Paint and a mouse. They say if they get a really expensive painting program and a tablet that they'll be the best artist you've ever seen. Personally I think MSPaint helps you grow more as an artist because you can't hide your mistakes behind all those fancy filters. You have to do everything manually which in return makes you better.

I also drew this because I wanted to start using Paint again, I need a break from Gimp. So, I'd really like some critique from you guys. Specifically on anatomy, shading, and tips for using Paint. (Goodness, I haven't use Paint in ages, I forgot half of the short cuts and tricks)

I had a similar problem you have.
Before when I used to draw, I would draw the dogs muzzle too long. But now its more normal sized. So I can relate to your problem.lol
But I have never drawn on the computer using piant before. The only thing close to that is the render I'm doing. :/: lol

No dear, you're not being rude at all.^^
To be honest, I don't know. I guess it's just because I've always drawn legs on my animals like that. It's probably because I don't use reference pictures for my drawings. Also the fact that I know basically nothing of the build or anatomy of a canine is probably a factor too. Which in reality is sad since I've owned a dog for all of my life.

I don't mean to be rude or anything, but why are his legs so long? ? :/

Sorry for the late reply guys^^;

@BaltoTrain1996: Thank you, though I don't exactly know what you mean by "I think you know where I'm going with this" But thank you, even though I could of done much better if I took more time on it.

@Sakujo: My friends say the same thing when ever I draw something. . .I've been trying to turn my style into more of a "cute" style. With all do attempts failed. . .

@Dragon Tamer: Hmmm, I've never heard of Redwall.

@Frozen Wolf: Thank you^^ and I'm horrible with making canid creature look different from the next canid. Seriously, if I drew a fox right now, the build would be exactly the same as how I draw a wolf, or a wolfmutt. I really need to work on that. I need to study up more on my anatomy of different animals. And wow 10 years. . . I haven't even own an actual functioning computer for that long. (I've only own a laptop with internet for about 2 years)

@Aperture: This is very helpful to me. I'll keep in mind that the arctic canines are more compact than lets say a canine that lives in a hot climate like Mexico or some other place like that. I guess it would make a bit more sense. But hey, I'm blonde, I have no sense.(bad joke) Anyway, thank you for giving me such good advice.

@Angle Dreamer: Yeah, I figured I needed to shorten the legs a bit. X3

~ Thank you to all of you. I really appreciate that you took the time to look and actually give me usable and very helpful critique. I actually wasn't expecting people to even comment. This isn't my best work, well the lineart was, but the coloring and shading not so much. So the thing I need to work the most on is my anatomy of the legs, I tend to make them too long and skinny. I also need to work on making my canines "fatter." My friends tell me all the time that I starve me drawings. . I also personally feel that I need to change the way I draw my paws, like make them look less "chunky" But once again, Thank you guys for commenting.~

wow this is..different. But it's really cool :) For anatomy, you might wan to make the legs shorter.

Interesting image. I admire how well you did your shading, considering it was done pretty much by hand. I also find it that the anatomy from his neck up to his face seems very nice, and his tail is not too long or fluffy, its a perfect size. Although I am somewhat concerned about the length of his legs, the picture is over all stunning. If you are looking to have a realistic style, you may want to consider making your wolves slightly fatter and shorter. Arctic animals tend to be more compact, with fluffy, stubby bodies, and short limbs. However, considering Balto was a stray and possibly underfed most of his life, I think you did a fine job making him thin. I think you drew a wonderful piece here, and I hope this was helpful to you.

Paint? Impressive. I'm really impressive actually.

Speaking of the anatomy? Well, pretty sure if it has to be wolf-dog hybrid, the leg would be shorter and bigger. But that's as far as I know about wolf-dog hybrid. The shading? For Paint, this is amazing considering you were impatient. Haha. I haven't used Paint for long time too. Probably around more than 10 years. Wew...

Good job Woopy. Good job, I can say that.

I'm somehow reminded of the graphic novel version of Redwall, if it had been done in color.
