When saveing a image to be transparent, you save it as a GIF. Well, I don't like the quality that a GIF format picture gives.

My question is, can you have a transparent image, in a PNG image format.?

Yes, actually transparency with PNG is much better than GIF (it
manages alpha transparency : a pixel can be semi-transparent, instead
of gid where a pixel is either transparent or not) - BUT it won't work
with the older versions of Internet explorer, it will display an ugly
background instead (it only works starting with IE 7.0, but half of
the visitors still use an older version)
