Balto Claw...there was no race in the real history. Dog teams were simply called for, and assigned to different sections of the route. The race is a purely fictional aspect of the Balto cartoon. Further, there was never a race to Anchorage. You're confusing the Serum Run with the annual Iditarod, which runs from Wasilla (a suburb of Anchorage) to Nome. The Serum Run ran from Nenana (a town near Fairbanks) to Nome...over a much different route. |
subject. And there is also "The Adventures of Balto: The
Untold Story of Alaska's Famous Iditarod Sled Dog", by
Patricia Chargot. While the latter is written for a younger
audience, the research is impeccable, and there are some
great historical photos in it.
