I noticed, whether the dog is hitched to a sled or not, wear these collars with a metal ring throughout the film. I've always wondered what they were. I know it has to do with sledding, but what is its purpose?

The collars would connect to the neck line which connects to the gang line. It's purpose is to keep the dogs straight and from getting turned around, this only works when the gang line is taut when the gang line is slacked out the dogs can still get turned around and tangled.

The question is whether or not it is an accurate representation (or
even a reasonable one) of the type of collars and connectors used
during the 1920s. I have seen a gang line with harnesses from that
era in a museum in Alaska, but it has been a long time, and I would
have to look it up again to verify the matter. |
