Hello! I just saw the updated fanart rules, and while I am glad that they're hammering out some new ones, I have a few questions, just to be sure I understand them correctly.
"- Drawings about a character from another movie are allowed. On condition that a official character from the concerned movie is also on the drawing (crossover). [...] However, manga characters are not allowed."
...so...this means that we absloutely cannot do a crossover that involves manga/anime characters? I know the description of the rule says that Steet wants to keep the sites primarily European/American based, but still, I'm just curious...why? When it comes down to it, the main difference between Japanese animation and European/American animation is the location in which they're made. And at any rate, these sites are already based on specific Western movies, which means they'd be primarily about such, so I don't really think it would be so much a big deal if there was an occasional crossover involving an anime/manga so long as the Source site being sent to DOES play an equal role in said crossover.
Now, granted, I am personally an "anime fan", but that's not the main reason I ask and I don't really plan to send much stuff that would conflict with this rule anyways (well, there is one thing that I wanted to post--actually two, come to think of it, though the other would be a revamp of an older drawing that I've posted before--but it wouldn't be a huge tragedy if I wasn't allowed to do so). I respect the rules and I will follow them, I'm just genuinely curious about the reasoning behind this one.
"- Pictures (from digital camera)
Pictures from digital camera are not allowed. Because it's a different media. And they are also protected by a copyright if you find it on the web."I can kind of understand why we aren't allowed to use screencaps as backgrounds
(well, actually, no I don't. I was thinking it might be because they belong to the animation studios and whatnot, but seeing as renders are still allowed, that reason wouldn't make sense.), as well as copyrighted images. But what if you were to use free stock images (as in, they are free for use so long as the rules set up by the photographer/image maker are followed...example, this .) or photographs you took yourself as a background for, granted, a Source-related drawing? Especially if edits are made to it. Yes, it's a different media, but incorporading diffierent mediums into one peice happens all the time in the art world--it's called mixed media.Again, I wouldn't be devestated if this wasn't allowed--I'm just curious.
Aaaaand that's all. Thanks for reading.

I know it's a bit unfair for the anime / manga characters, but Steet doesn't "like" it. I could ask again if you want to, we've just followed his first wish here. I think he's afraid to offer an "open door" to everything that could be violent or "not in Animation Source spirit" (like a crossover where Balto meets a pokemon - original, but different kind of spirits). We can't allowed everything.
For the second question, Hecate could probably reply easier than me. One more time, I think it's because we fear abuse - if we say "it's okay" to a part of that kind of thing, people will ask why not the other part, mods will maybe disagree... We need to say absolutly "yes" or absolutly "no" or I think the copyright issue will be too complicated... Children often say "we find it on the web" or pretend to have done it by themselves (in our side), and our job isn't necessary to chase thieves... =/

About the anime stuff. I don't mean to allow just general anime, but
if there was a crossover with a Source movie/series that happened to
involve an anime character, I don't see why that shouldn't be allowed.
For example, these are the two pieces of mine that I was referring to
in the question: http://www.animationsource.org [...] &numart=2377&deb=18&display=18 ^The old drawing that I wanted to revamp. http://oi42.tinypic.com/f0uo0k.jpg ^The new one that I wanted to post. The little boy, Kiotsu, is one of my anime-based fancharacters, but the dog is, of course, Cat's Kiona, who is very much Balto-related...which is why I would like to post it here, if I can. If you, in your opinion, don't like anime, then hey, that's 100% OK with me. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions and I'm cool with that. I just don't understand why we should disallow pictures such as the ones shown above if other crossovers are allowed. -shrug- As for the photo backgrounds, there would, granted, have to be rules surrounding them. Basically, what Troll said in the forum topic she linked to: just make it required for people to credit and link back to the source unless they took the photo themselves. If they can't link back to it and just say "well, I got it from Google", then the piece should be deactivated. But if they can do such and it is indeed a free stock, I don't see an issue with it. ialsodontunderstandwhyyoureworriedaboutthemstealingcopyrightedimagesin theformofphotobackgroundswhentheyrealreadystealingcopyrightedimagesint heformofrendersandthatsappareantlyokjustsayingcoughcough. |

With respects, Natti (because I love most of your art, though I don't
get into the whole Japanese-style anime, manga and "chibi" stuff), I
think it's best for the gates to be shut to all manner of anime (as
well as manga and even chibi) art and so on. It would indeed open a
major can of worms to allow that stuff, because of how much of that
stuff has already flooded places like deviantArt (more's the pity, in
my humble opinion). I mean, think of the large number of weeaboos who
are members of this site. Can you imagine what would happen to
Animation Source if, all of a sudden, it was announced that anime,
manga and chibi (and probably other such styles) were allowed here?
"Pandora's Box" doesn't even BEGIN to adequately cover it, the way I
see it. And that's not a good thing. ![]() But no ill reflection on your stuff or your love of this. I'm just saying. Here it would simply be a horrible idea to allow that stuff. |

I agree with photo background one. Here's my forum topic about this -
http://www.animationsource.org/board/photo-backgrounds-t35765.html
Though I might try asking French mods about this (they seem to be just better oriented in the new rules and in doubts - they can ask Steet) |
Apply the rules of JC's crossover fanfics, and Balto could be crossed over with many different movies and cartoons that take place in the 20's. With anime, however, there are very few that take place in that specific time frame, and even fewer that revolve around dogs and talking animals. They either happen way before Balto's time or after or are futuristic or sci-fy or fantasy. Any fantasy animes that could work have to do with Japanese lore and not American or Inuit, and any anime that takes place in 1920's America is more about your gangs and mobsters. (Not something I'd throw Balto into, personally.)
I would say "Balto could be crossed over with Ginga" but I'm not entirely sure when that series takes place, but I am 99.9% sure it is a good 50+ years after Balto's time.
Really the only Japanese thing that I can think of that would work with Balto is Kingdom Hearts, since the game itself has to do with universe and time jumping, and the characters can shift in order to blend in with the world they're in.
Japanese animation shouldn't be excluded just because steet doesn't like it. Crossovers should be more about whether or not it works and less about where the medium is from. Even if anime is one of the least-practical things to cross Balto over with.
