What must Balto have eaten to stay alive?Did he scavenge,did he hunt?Does anyone know?

The cartoon movies don't go into that. It is likely that, being a stray living on the outskirts of town, he occasionally foraged in garbage, or received handouts from sympathetic citizens. I don't think he would have hunted. In the real Nome region, it is possible, but unlikely he could have made much of a living that way. Small game would consist of ground squirrels, ptarmigans, snow hares, rabbits, and small birds. Rats would be possible, but (surprisingly) rare up in that climate.

However, if one looks closely at the boat he lives on with Boris, there is a water bowl always present (even a dog toy or two). Logically, a human would have placed that there. So it is also logical to conclude that some human (perhaps even Rosy) brings things to him out of sympathy and friendship. So it is possible that she also brings food out on occasion. And his eventual relationship with Jenna would have made things easier as well, seeing as she is the family pet of Rosy and her parents. And certainly the Nome citizens would have looked more kindly and sympathetically on Balto after the serum run, what with his returning to town with the team and the medicine both intact.

he ate food like all other dogs, he might have hunted, or maybe people fed him and he could have scavenged.

	Who knocks at the garden gate?

I'm guessing he hunted. Or stolen from town. I'm not sure.
